Looks like I am not the only one having trouble with the "do it" switch to Windows 10... I got the notice it was going to do it at 11:00 pm last Friday night.... and son was over Friday morning so agreed to watch over it to answer any questions I didn't understand.  I've ignored the warnings & begging so far but this message just announced it was going to do it.  Before 10 install I had no trouble with this laptop going to sleep & going off line every time, plus I have to restart if I want to check my Fitbit....every time.  I can go to the pop up & have it look for & fix the problem, will be back online but the minute I stop typing or moving around, it goes to sleep.  To check Fitbit I have to restart the computer EVERY time.  I think it gives a 30 day (not sure the time limit) to switch back to 7.... anyone do that?  I don't like changes but sure did NOT have these problems before 10 took over.  Any advice?  This was XP before son upgraded it to 7 for me... but I don't care about all the updates as long as the thing just works!

JeanneP

Shirley.  Now I get it up everyday telling me that W10 ready to install. Looks like it is just going to do it want it or not but at the bottom it says. Now or Later.  I just always hit later.  It shouldn't have been able to just install.   I will never download anything says FREE. Will get it when I get another computer. Not in a hurry. I like W7 and does all I want one to do.

RAMMEL....

Apparently you missed the point.......

I realize that the seniors who follow this forum and your suggestion can avoid the update, but there are thousands of Win 7 and Win 8 users  who are not familiar with that solution.
Because of Microsoft's pressures, all they have to do is click the 'X' or turn their computers off and they automatically have Windows 10.

QUOTES FROM THE ARTICLE:
But deploying these dirty tricks only frustrates long-time Windows users who have very valid reasons to stick with operating systems they already know and love. And thanks to the deceitful new update.......................................

"Work at a repair shop. So many customers called complaining about how they hit the "X" as usual and got upgraded to Windows 10".

"Of the ~10 offices i work at, 4 PCs upgraded last wk. We use w7, so had to roll them bk to 7. Old PCs, ~2.5hrs ea"

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

I was just presenting the latest Microsoft maneuvers in general....not specific to S & F members.

donklan  ---  I didn't miss the point.  I should have added a new message for those who didn't follow what is happening.  I see here on S&F a couple more have been updated - without OK-ing it.

My post was not in response to your observation, but a caution to others. Obviously, not done correctly  ???

I put off letting 10 install until the pop up stated IT WAS GOING to INSTALL at 11:00 PM so while son was here we allowed it to happen that morning.  I won't get the offer on Vista or XP and since I don't do a lot of surfing & do keep AVAST updated, I guess I'm safe on them?  I will use McDonald's wi-fi when I go to CO and don't do any banking online.  Am seriously thinking of buying a Mac next time, any advice about that?

Well, will restart the computer to check Fitbit tonight.  This is the only computer (Windows 7) new enough to put Fitbit on, guess I'll try to go back to 7 next time son is here.  Both my husband's & my 17" Toshiba laptops are about 6 years old (sticker on front says Media Center 2005)... time flies.  I gave him one for Christmas & he was so pleased with it (XP) he gave me one for my birthday in January.  Mine came with Vista & I love it.  Son put Windows 7 on his XP after he died, & when I discovered the "Fitbit needed 7 or newer".  Fitbit has earned my respect & pushed me more than I hoped it would.  End of story..... I'll keep checking back to see if anyone has a fix for my problems.

donklan

HI SHIRLEY.........

If you ever discover a 'fix' for your WIN 10s going to sleep all the time, please pass it on.

I have all settings set to      [ 'sleep':  NEVER]    on both my laptop and desktop.

After 4 or 5? minutes they both go to 'sleep' and have to be reawakened using a password.

I would guess this is a laptop issue, and I have a desk top with no problems.   I took a look and found this link. Am quoting one of the comments.  Sorry history did not pick up the link, and now do not see, but the solution is worth a try.

Finally found the solution, just in time too because I swear I was about to go insane.

Right click on desktop > Power and sleep > Additional power settings > Choose when to turn off the display > Change advanced power settings > Restore plan defaults

I don't know why but this completely got rid of the issue and I was then able to make the settings whatever I wanted.

Hope this helps!

donklan

I'll look into that, Jack.

It is not only laptops as my desktop is sleepy also.

I have W7 and W10 laptops and do not have that problem.  I have other problems I won't go into but the computers going to sleep is not one of them.

Don I took a look at the power settings on my machine, and screen shot will show where to restore to default.   I did not since not having the problem..   I often put the machine on sleep manually and no problem waking back up.

Shirley

I'm working on it....  trouble is (part of trouble is)... my screens don't look like the one you show, Jack.  I use Google Chrome, are you using Firefox?  Maybe it is a Toshiba thing?  I did make a change but did not do the back to default 'cause it said it would do everything & that scared me.   :uglystupid2:  I'll see what this does, be back later.  Got to restart to get Fitbit to talk to me.

JeanneP

Now I think that you have to hit the button on the W10 saying. it will say Now or Later. Have to hit the later.. If you just do the X then I can see where it will start loading. The X for way I think just closes  the window showing on computer it does not stop things from running until you shut computer off. So you didn't really refuse Windows 10.  MS are sharp enough to set that up.  No way you can stop them from it showing up everyday.  Just have to say Later.  One day they will give up trying.  This is my idea on it.

I just almost got caught on another fast one.  The item said.  Free Shipping $19.95 and later if you went further it did say. Free Shipping 19.95 Free Trial. after 30 days would be billed $39.95 month for 6 months.  I managed to catch on to it but I had given my CC number earlier. Called them and no order showing. Will make sure by calling my Bank on CC.  Companies getting so clever now.  But I was stupid on that one. Good they were not downloading on Sat. And Sunday. I did it Sat night.

Shirley that is a screen shot on my Windows 10 believe if you enlarge you can see the process, Control panel etc.

Shirley

Don't anybody say anything too loud, the computer is behaving this morning & I really don't know why.  I tried everything everyone suggested and all of a sudden ......... don't want to jinx it, but I am SO RELIEVED.

I shut down the computer last night, did change settings to never sleep & have the bouncing bubbles as screen saver, so when I got up about 3:45 am to let cats in or out (storms have messed up any routine), I turned on the computer to check radar (much better than TV radar), still had to restart to get Fitbit to talk to me, so went on to the kitchen to fix me an egg sandwich with extra jelly toast & couple cups of coffee & topped that off with a slice of banana bread I made yesterday.  Fed cats & by then was getting light enough to let LaurenKat out so back to check radar to make sure no storms for at least a couple hours.  Found the bouncing bubbles working, clicked the mouse to start up and IT WORKED AS SUPPOSED TO!  Even let me check Fitbit & it came up as should.  Slept for a couple hours & the bubbles were still bouncing so I wiggled the mouse & by golly, it's doing what it's supposed to do!  Ain't that a hoot?!

I do wish I knew what made the difference, could be I threatened to go back to Windows 7 & it believed me.  Right now I am still connected, afraid to pause very long since that is when it goes to sleep, but would have done it already if something hadn't clicked into place.  Wish I could give you a simple remedy but I honestly tried everything suggested... over & over ... and I will hold my breath, just wanted to encourage y'all to keep on until Windows 10 gives up & you WIN!

JeanneP

Shirley.  That was quite a meal for 3:30 in the morning. Did you go back to bed?.

I use to do things like that. Stopped buying Chinese Egg Rolls at Sams. So good and I would wake up about 2:30am wanting one. Now once in awhile I will get up and make cup hot milk and cookie and go right back to sleep.  Your cats keep you busy.

Shirley

JeanneP, I've always had a good appetite & could eat all I wanted without gaining weight.... drives my friend nuts because she just looks a food & puts on a pound.  We are 10 days apart in age.  No credit to me, it's all in the genes.  I was a picky eater but ate like a horse if something I liked. I did get a couple more hours sleep but not enough... about 5 hours total.  I'm eager to get to bed now.

Not all perfect with the computer, it goes into bouncing bubbles if I glance over at TV... but for right now I am not going to mess with it.  I will shut down tonight & hope that is what it likes, at least it is working.  The little 12" computer's mouse is also working but insists I need to update Avast so it's working on that.  Since it is XP & no longer updates from MS, I have to keep Avast updated... at least I think it is safer with it up dated as often as possible.

I am still trying to get organized on Windows 10.  I tried to download Firefox, it said it couldn't be downloaded. Does anyone have any idea why?

Shirleyn believe it is possible you have Firefox but have to make it your default instead of edge.  In the search windows panel type in firefox and it should show if you have it.     Hope this helps

Help ???

I have W10 on my desktop and have never had a problem with it until I clicked on something (I don't know what) and all my icons on my desktop screen disappeared!

The task bar on the bottom of the screen is still there with everything but the icons are gone from the screensaver page.

Anyone know how I can get them back?

Thanks.

Mary

Don, right, Rick says right click , then go to view and be sure to check the show desktop icons.

MaryTX

Thanks guys.  I followed Rick's suggestion of right-clicking on an empty spot and and right click "show icons" and they all came back just like they disappeared before ;D.

Jack, I checked the forums like you said and the more I read, the more confused I got!  Two right-clicks is more my speed :).

I share the desktop with my son and we were perfectly satisfied with Win 7 but woke up one morning to have Win 10 installed.  Other than my goof, we haven't had any problems.  Knock on wood :)

I had 8.1  on my laptop which I detested and wanted W10 but it would download but won't install.  Finally had to take it to a tech to get it working.

My computer experience started with IBM Keypunch back around 1960 and mainframe computers the size of a house.  The smaller they got, the more confusing things came ;D.

Thanks again.
