Marilyn

where do I find the clip tool

MarsGal

Checked Windows updates yesterday on my notebook and discovered Windows Anniversary lists as Error. When I click on Error to find out the explanation, all it says is to install install it, no reason for the Error.  So that is two for two. I just got this notebook a few weeks ago; I do not wish to have it screwed up first thing. Will keep 1511 as long as I can. Don't need or want all the additional Cortana/Edge/Social Media stuff; don't use it.

jackwv

Marilyn  go to Windows Accessories then to snipping tool  right click and you can add it to start

I do not have the anniv. update, will have to see what if anything it goofs up.  Agree I can do without many of the new features.

jackwv

Today I received the notice that the Anniv update was available.  It took 3 hours.  Kept busy but would check.  It would restart several times and one time had to answer a question.  All appears fine, did not get involved with Cortana.  I did have a problem with my normal routine of transferring photos from my camera.   Checked the auto play settings but did not correct.  Found the photos but must research to find how to get back to the old routine.

With all the problems people are posting on the web with the Anniversary update, I'm avoiding it as long as I can.
The only problem: it is listed as one of the updates in the que, just waiting for me to reboot my computer.
I like to restart frequently to refresh my system, but when I click on the Power icon it offers me two choices:
   1. Update and restart
   2. Update and shutdown.

I'm dragging my feet, especially since many people report they've lost SYSTEM RESTORE capability with the update.

Windows 10 Anniversary attempted to automatically update yesterday and was successful. I think what must have happened the first time was that I shut the machine down without knowing it was trying to download the first time. Seems to be working okay. I had to go in and reset a few things like Bluetooth and some of the file sharing/social media things that I don't want. I might uninstall them like I did on the old machine, but I worry that it will mess up the program at some point in the update future.

jackwv

I intend to keep the update.   At this point only had the auto play question.  Old machine so not surprised when something is not 100%.

Have not had time to spend on moving around to see if all working.  The problem for me is usually not Microsoft, but my dislike of change.

Have a bone scan scheduled this morning, think I will ask them to check my bone head  :)

JeanneP

I was getting the bone scans up to last year but think thats it. What they are now they will stay. What else can we do. Mine not a problem even though not showing the best. Would not take meds now. Just stay with the Milk. Calcium is in most things. Watch not climbing up on ladders. stumbling around drunk. Those kind of things. They saw to keep a little weight on. Just not be skinny. I like that. Like to eat. I do keep up with the Blood Vessel tests which seem O.K. Same with BP. Don't bother with the Colestrol testing other than seeing them on my Yearly Blood Panel. None of those drugs for me either.

I had the W10 anniversary update and all my older programs still work. I had to go in and delete several of the programs that they added as well as totally shut down Windows defender but I did that when I first got downloaded W10 as well.

Many of us here are experts at using Google or other search sites to find answers to problems or asking them here on site for others more knowledgeable to help. There are also other systems such as Ubuntu that you may use instead as one person did. Again there are people here and online sites that can help. Several of the apps I run, I was told would not work past W7, but they do, even after the anniversary update.

jackwv

JeanneP  will wait for results but like you, doubt I will take a drug, had real problems 2 years ago.  Will turn 86 next month and think the old bones will last me.

Patricia, the update appears to not have caused a problem.  I seldom use edge, still using Internet Explorer 11 with Google as my search engine.

I still need to go to favorites and Seniors in order to use the Font, Size etc, like on this post.   When I just use the email link to the discussion I am unable to change anything.

angelface555

I did as Larry suggested and used WordWrap to list the code and copied that to my desktop so I know the code and can simply copy it onto my message or post and insert my writing into the code and post.

I use B I Font Face Font Size and color with no spaces and these brackets  [ ]. I can use them in other places doing that. I do know that often you will have to go into places a zoom setting in Chrome or FireFox can't help.

MICROSOFT ISSUES 9 NEW UPDATES

Keeping your computer updated is critical, and Microsoft just released nine new updates for your Windows PC…

Microsoft just release nine new updates for your PC.  There are five updates deemed “critical”, and four identified as “important” that need to be completed on your computer as soon as possible.

We have stressed the importance, over and over again, of keeping your PC’s applications, operating systems, and security software up-to-date for security purposes, and this is why.  These security patches are fixing vulnerabilities found within the system.  Without patching them, hackers could potentially have the ability to gain access into your computer on various different levels to steal your information.  Patch management is critical for computer security.

Please visit ComputerWorld to read a full description for each update, what applications will be impacted, and why the updates are necessary.

https://techtalk.pcpitstop.com/2016/08/10/new-ransomware-disguised-microsoft-alert/?microsoftalertransomware=

Ransomware attacks are targeting users by sending a fraudulent Microsoft alert their way…

SC Magazine reported a new ransomware variant was recently discovered.  The malware is disguised as a Microsoft alert stating the user’s Windows license has expired and to remediate the issue, users need to unlock their PC.  It was not reported if the computer is then locked on this screen until the victim calls, or if they’re able to remediate the issue after the alert populates.

Some of you may be feeling a sense of deja vu reading this.  Recently, we reported on a tech support scam that sounded pretty similar to this.  The primary difference between the two, is the tech support scam sent an update request to the user, which required action for the scam to occur.  Once the user clicked update, the PC would start the “updating” process.  Once the process was “finished” they’d then get an alert stating the license has expired and the user needs to call for assistance.

Ransomware has become a lucrative business.  Therefore, it is not believed these cyber criminals will give up anytime soon.  While the ransomware war rages on, PC Matic encourages all users to keep their operating systems, security software and applications up-to-date.

To check for system updates, you can go to: Settings>Windows Updates>Check for Updates.

I have posted in the past that I have had no issues with Windows 10.  Following the last update, I began having a problem with Edge.  It would load repeatedly with the logo lining up across the task bar, and I had to go to Task Master to stop it running.   I became aware that Edge was my default browser, so changed it to Internet Explorer. Had no further problem but decided to go to Microsoft Answer Desk.   They scheduled a tech to contact me, and he spent almost an hour making adjustments.  (I gave them permission to take over the pc and just sat and watched)    Would only do this with Microsoft direct!

Unable to correct I was told they would have a Level 2 tech contact me to handle.   I had to wait for a scheduled call, no problem.  He then called and after traveling about my pc, it appears he decided to reinstall windows 10, the 14393 build.  This was a long process, he spent about 45 min. then told me it would take considerable time.  At that point he left and for around 2 hours the computer reinstalled, shutting down several times.   I am now back in business, no issues, but will leave Internet Explorer 11 as my default  (I use google search)

Hope this does not happen to you, but I must add that all the work done by the "Answer Desk" was without charge.

Here is their link.  They have phone and chat help, but I talk too much and type too slow. :)

MarsGal

For some reason I don't like Edge. I remain a loyal Firefox user.

angelface555

Thanks for the information, Jack. I may need it in the future so bookmarked it. I purchased this laptop last Wednesday and have twice had it restart because of "an internal kernel trap." I Googled it only to become more confused as was both the questioners and those answering it seemingly to be as well.

jackwv

MarsGal   It just troubled me that Edge was acting up.  I seldom use, and prefer IE.

Patricia.   I may have just gone on with the error, but was relieved that Microsoft would take over and do the work for me.   I have checked and all my programs are working fine, hope the reinstall worked things out.

One thing I learned in the process was to change my browser default to  IE and now can use the icons.  Was having a problem in the past apparently since my mail program defaulted to Edge and for some reason they would not work unless I went to IE and favorites.

JeanneP

Now mine stopped appearing on computer about Aug. 1st like they said.

I have a new computer built with W10 on it. Sitting down in Texas but not been down to get it yet.  To hot to drive 1200 miles.  I am still content with W7 at the moment. Not ready to beginning getting into the changes W10 made.

shirleyn

Good morning.  You all have helped me out a lot with this new Windows 10 & I sure appreciate your help.  This morning I got a notice from ByteFence (that I did not load, but it came with the computer) that my web browser (Firefox) was hijacked by Adware.  Of course, in order for them to fix it, I would have to buy ByteFence.  Which I do not know anything about.
HELP!

shirleyn

Oops!  Another question - what do you all recommend as a free anti-virus program?  I used to have it on the old computer, but cannot remember the name.

MarsGal

Shirley, sounds like a marketing ploy to me. I went to the Firefox (Mozilla) site and added a plug in called Ad Block Plus. It blocks ad popups. On my old machine, I used to have a do not track plug-in, but haven't installed one in this new machine yet. Firefox has several to choose from. They are easy to install and easy to disable or uninstall, which is really nice if you don't like one you installed or it doesn't work well for you, you can always try another until you find one you like.

I use Avast Pro Antisoftware which comes with a SafeZone browser which I use on occasion, mostly for paying bills or checking my bank account. I think that has a do not track feature built in, but I really didn't pay much attention to how it works. It may just encrypt my browsing. Either way, it is another way to go for your web browsing.

Also, I installed Malwarebytes Free Anti-Malware. It works well to find malicious adware/software and PUP's (Potentially Unwanted Programs) that may get installed unbeknownst to you. This is on top of the anti-malware in my Avast Anti-Virus software. I just like Malwarebytes a lot.

These are just some of the things I do. Mostly I stick with freeware. I checked the ByteFence site. Their free antimalware program only detects. You have to buy the upgrade to get the removal tools. Does it have a quarantine feature? Malwarebytes puts things it finds into a "sandbox" or quarantine folder which keeps the programs from running or doing harm. From there you can delete them if they are in fact something you don't want. Some malware needs special attention. BTW, Microsoft has info on removing some of the malicious programs and also how to remove ransomware. Their Windows Defender anti-virus software supposedly actively watches for and blocks some of these. I imagine it is hard to keep up with the hackers and all their new versions of such programs.

MarsGal

I just saw your other question. Avast and AVG both have highly rated free anti-virus software. I use Avast, but my best friend likes AVG better. AVG rates a smidge higher in antivirus but Avast does a little better then them in finding anti-malware. I just like the interface with Avast better.

The one program I never liked was McAfee. Every time I bought and installed their software, it messed up my machine. So I don't trust it anymore. If you have Comcast for a provider, they offer Norton Anti-Virus free which is what we had when I worked. Comcast switched from McAfee to Norton a few years ago because to many of their customers were having problems with it. I can't say how well Norton works these days, especially on a PC (our work computers were all Mac). As far as I know, Norton does not offer free anti-virus otherwise, so it is a nice perk for Comcast internet users if they want it.

shirleyn

Wow, thank you so much Marsgal.  I have printed all of your suggestions & will be working on them.  Again, thanks!

wjoan

Shirley, I use Avast also.

shirleyn

Hi Joan, thanks.  I just downloaded it.

shirleyn

Okay, here is another question for the Windows 10.  A few days ago my system got updated.  I wasn't asked, it just did it.  The first thing I noted was that whenever I leave the computer sit inactive for over a half hour I have to sign in again.  I don't mind doing this in the AM when I start things up for the day, but I do mind having to sign in so often. There is just me and my husband here, so no chance of someone getting in that should not be there.  My question - is there somewhere I can go to change this?

jackwv

Shirley I did remove the need for a password and believe this is the link I followed.

Jack!!  Wow!  It worked.   Thanks!

Thank you Jack.

I followed your  link and successfully got rid of
the necessity for me to log in every time I turn on
my computer.

Very easy to follow instructions.

Thanks again,
Sandy
