Oldiesmann: Finally got the AmazonBot situation under control. I basically changed some server settings to tell AmazonBot that it's not allowed to access anything on the site. That should fix the speed issues we've been experiencing lately

The scariest bridge I have ever been on is the bridge over the Royal Gorge in Colorado. We lived in CO for a year before moving to NY. It is the highest  bridge in the US.  No traffic allowed but foot traffic could go on it and my husband dared me.  I walked about 10 ft. out, peeked over the railing down to the river one mile down, ran back off that bridge with great speed.  He laughed...I didn't.

Thank you,  Ciaobella.  I was a DL in the old Seniornet hand craft discussion, Needles, Hooks, and Shuttles and was part of the book group.  I LOVED the times we studied various works such as Canterbury  Tales  with Deems and deToqueville with Robbie and I posted occasionlly in SeniorLearn book discussion.  When Pat Scott started SeniorsandFriends she asked me to partipate here, I am a global moderator like Rammel and led the What's for Dinner forum here for awhile then turned it over to Bubble, so I have been around for a long time.  I found SN when I was 60 and I  am  95 now so it has been 35 years.  THUS, I went on a rant the other day when it seemed no one ever remembers me.  I AM OVER THAT BY NOW and  feeling a bit embarrassed by my tantrum.  😡

I have reached 95 also.  96 in May.  I think I joined Senior.Net early on, but I do not remember.  I have a little black picture book that has a cover printed:  Senior.Net, 20th Anniversary. 1986 . 2006
So who knows? But Phyllis, you belong here with us

For all of you New York City folk, my great grandson, Sam Whitty, is at Julliard getting his master's.  His Kansas City, Missouri high school orchestra will be at Carnegie Hall on February 25th, and will be playing one of Sam's pieces along with their program.  I am too old now to have any hope of seeing Sam become a great composer, but am ready now to assure you he already IS one!

What an honor for Sam, for you and for the entire family!

Phyllis do you remember... I'm trying to remember the first book discussed on what was then Senior Net - I'm vaguely remembering it was Snow Falling on Cedar - all I remember was following each day without the courage to post - it was 2 or maybe the 3rd book, I think September before I dared to post - Of course there was Ginny and Joan Pearson and I'm remembering a Deems but I don't remember who she was or where she lived - do you have any memory of her?

We did so many wonderful books and met online so many wonderful people who posted and led discussions who have passed.

In the 90s and early 2000s there were many online book discussions however, this group, even after we ended up as two groups, are still here while all the others only lasted a few short years. Says much about the character and enthusiasm of those who over the years participated and the excellence of both welcoming all voices and digging deep into each story by the discussion leaders.

Phyllis being a part of that was special and I bet you have many good memories of some of those wonderful books we read and those you led.

Barb, et.al. I am little excited this morning. Ginny just left a post on Senior Learn. So wonderful to hear from her. Phyllis, you may remember her. She has not been posting much this past year while she copes with health issues and her rather large group of Latin classics classes.

phyllis

Barb and MG,  Deems was also known on SN as Maryal.  In her real life she was a professor at the Naval Academy in Annapolis. And, I do remember Ginny.  Wasn't she a professor at a university in So. Carolina?  Always upbeat in her posts.
I never particapated in the Latin classes...hated my high school Latin classes so had no interest.  I was an English Literature major in college so focused on that. I don't remember any of the earlier book discussions on Seniornet...just Canterbury Tales. Deems/Maryal took on the part of the inn keeper and it seems the group was always "drinking mead" in our imaginary travels. I remember studying Don Quihote with the book group.  Robbie Idalucha was in that discussion, too, I think...he was an interesting man...a practising psychologist from Warrenton, Va.  Later on he  led the discussion on the neverending "Democracy in America" by deToqueville.

Good memories of that time.  I had  health issues so could never attend a bash so never actually met anyone but always felt they were my friends.

I'm not a book person, never was. But I can do fairly well with a Tech Manual.  Anyway --- I remember most of those names mentioned above. Never knew about their public life, except that of Robbie.

My husband collected and read tech manuals. Neither of us could keep on walking past a bookstore without buying a book(s).  After he retired he still bought them.

I knew Robbie personally, as we both lived in Northern Virginia.  He was great.  I also remember every person you have mentioned.  Specially Deems;  she was so smart.  I was not deeply into any particular discussion at any time, and spent a lot of time away from Senior.Net.  But I also went to a number of bashes.  My darling husband went to at least one with me, & I remember now that he got sick & had to leave early.  The books were my all time favorite.  I was an early reader, & can remember my uncle, who was a Pediatrician, recommended an afternoon nap, so I had to take one religiously.  So I can remember hiding my book under the bedcovers when I heard an adult approaching my room to release me.  I did not want them to discover that I NEVER napped, but read instead.  The house was full of books, as were all of my adult homes.
By the time my dementia kicked in, I had to sit myself down & discuss with myself whether or not to continue buying books.  My final thoughts were, & please forgive me my language, Oh, to hell with it; I will buy what I d___ well please.

If I read the same book 20 times, it would probably be brand new to me each time, now.  What the heck, I go on reading & learning & forgetting; but it is also a habit of a lifetime, & not to be discarded & still be who I am.

I was not an avid follower of any discussion because I have always had too much else going on in my life, but I loved everyone (well, almost) & wanted more hours in my days & more days in my weeks so I could accomplish more.

Cappesh?  Remember when we used to ask that all the time?

Marilyne

Does anyone else remember the ongoing Book Quiz,   in the books and literature folder in Senior Net?   Whoever was in charge (Ginny, Robbie?),  would post hints, and we would all take guesses.  I think we were allowed one guess a day? Sometimes the quiz would go on for weeks, and whoever guessed correctly would win a prize.  I remember it fondly, because I finally won, after playing for many years.   The book/play that  I guessed was,  "A Man For All Seasons", by  Robert Bolt.  it was also made into an Academy Award winning movie in the  1960's.
I was so thrilled when I won!  My prize was a years subscription to Bookmarks Magazine.

Oh Rammel, No!  I am not really offended.  I am just having fun giving you a bad time.  But no offence taken, & so I hope we are friends.

By the way, where in the world did you find that?  It must have been about a bazillion years ago.

RAMMEL

Mary Page - I had a problem with my Hard Drive, and when I fixed it I looked through all the files I had there and ran across a bunch of old SeniorNet pictures. From past Bashes. So many people I have never met, but fortunately I put names with most of the pic's.  I'm still looking for the YELLOW BUS that went around collecting SeniorNetters for one of the Bashes.

Everyone here are my friends

Barb, oh how nice to see that picture of the SN members.  I so remember the first book discussion I joined in on was Teacher Man by Frank McCourt published in 2005. All the members were so kind and welcoming. Gosh, I remember Ella and I were going to meet up since we both lived in Ohio, and she slipped and injured herself and we never got around to scheduling a date. I took a sabbatical from the group back in 2020 and when I returned, I noticed Jonathan was no longer posting.  He was such a gentleman, and we shared the same interests in many books, one being Wives and Daughters by Elizabeth Gaskell. I remember one of his last posts was during Covid and he was going to the mall in Canada where he lived and did not seem to worry too much about exposure at that time, he was I believe in his late 80's early 90's.  He was such an inspiration to our discussions.

Ciao for now~

From the picture of the Chicago Bash I remember Ginger's face immediately.  I saw her at more than one bash.  And Robby I knew, of course.  I also saw a lot of Pat over the years, but do not remember anything about the yellow bus!

Marilyne, you always find something nice to say.  I would like to tell everyone that that was not my hair dyed pink!  It came with the hat.

MarsGal

I remember most of the people in the photo and the yellow bus.

Just saw a picture that Bubble posted for JeanneP back in 2020 of her pets with a big bunch of daffodils in a vase in the foreground. I love daffodils!

That reminds me, Welsh Language Music Day was on February 7, and St.David's Day will be on March 1 this year.

Thank you Barb for sharing these photos.......Oh what a treat to see these pictures.  I recognized many but there are a few I do not, so I am happy the names were included‼️

Ever so often I think of someone in particular and cherish their memory.  Over the years we sure have had some very special folks in our groups.

:D  :2funny: OK folks - it was Rick (Rammel) who shared the yellow bus and I shared the photo from the Chicago Bash  ;)  - please now, someone straighten me out - I think the yellow bus pickup was for a bash that took place someplace on the east coast - since I did not attend that is my vague memory as it was talked about after the Bash took place - however, I do not have any memory of where the yellow bus pickup actually took place - can anyone fill me in...please...

All y'all are freezing with snow falling heavy and for us it is one of those days when it feels like we need heat however, the humidity is high and it has been raining and raining so the Air Conditioner also comes on - the furnace has been having a war with itself since before noon - and then I turn on the weather channel and as fast as they show more rain they in less than 5 minutes show some kind of air mass bringing the weather up from the Gulf to Houston moving quickly across the coast, across the lower part of Georgia and up the Atlantic - with that I'm as confused as I'm guessing the weather announcers... for now there is sun and I'll leave it at that... and I think the better part of valor is to go shut the furnace off entirely and than go make a cup of coffee followed by a nap.

Denver

CIOBELLA, that is the cutest most precious story you shared with us.  I have never heard it before and I love it.  Thank you for sharing😘.

JACKIE, I did not know or remember that you were born in Scotland either‼️

BARB, I occasionally find things that I have put somewhere and as I run across them I am quite surprised‼️ Hopefully the bulbs will be fine and will still grow😘🤓🤨. I got quite the chuckle out of your garbage pail story.  Wise choice...just leaving it their full or empty‼️‼️

MARS, I love to read about Oscar and Shan.....I miss my kitty so much but my son and dil have been staying temporarily at our home in Colorado with him and they send pictures and tell me all about how they are spoiling him. They will be moving to their new home soon and they both are so worried about Smokey being alone with only a neighbor tending to his needs😩 They did assure me that even though they are extremely fond of the little guy they are NOT going to take him to Arizona with them when they move😂😂 As much as I have enjoyed our extended stay here, I will not ever rent a place that my kitty can not come along😩. FYI, we did know family would be at our home to stay with him or we never would have done this😢

MARILYN, it,has been heartbreaking to see the horrific damage to the LA area as well as the flooding and terrible tornadoes across the country😩. So sad.  I know it is hard for you and many to see what became of your beloved California.  Sadly I feel the same about Denver.  It was so nice before the '80's and the influx of people moving into our states.  Our San Francisco son is the one staying in our home as they have just sold their Noe Valley home and are buying in AZ.  He said you can not believe how rude people are to him as he is driving with California Plates on his car.  Californians are not overly welcome here in Prescott either..... sad isn't it?

Out of time.....will come back in and catch up soon.

Miss you all‼️

The Yellow Bus, as I recall, was a fictitious bus that went around and "collected" people for a Bash (I think the one Pat Scott had). There is another picture of it stuffed with people all over it. Will look for that one. I think it has already been posted here on S&F.  I don't recall who created and posted the bus, but all had fun with it.
