Oldiesmann: Finally got the AmazonBot situation under control. I basically changed some server settings to tell AmazonBot that it's not allowed to access anything on the site. That should fix the speed issues we've been experiencing lately

SHARON - Good Morning.  I just read your post about teaching your SS class while your regular Teacher is away.  I think you'll enjoy it.  I've done that several times when our former and current Teachers were on vacation or attending some type of Conference.  I've also taught a couple of times in other Churches that I was NOT familiar with but somehow the regular teacher had heard of me and called.

One of the best preparation steps for me was to  think about what aspect of the Bible and Christianity really "speaks to me."  Took some notes, of course, but mostly just shared my own thoughts of what I have learned and enjoyed over the years when listening to the regular teacher or earlier guest teachers.

You're an interesting Lady and I am confident you will go a great job!

Marilyn

Does you google maps on your phone talk to you? I would never even try to read the maps while I am driving and Keith doesn't know ho to  work a smart phone.

JeanneP

Little Cooler here today but not enough for me. People calling low 80s cool. I want low 70s  But year going by fast and so it will be cool soon.

Just went to ENT doctor this morning. What a crowd the place had. But mine was fast. Just deadened my nose. Stuck a camera up. Says all looked clear to him. Raspy voice just from Sinus so take same med and Use a Saline wash in nose. Also didn't realize that Acid Re flux could also make you lose voice. I had been doing it a lot last few months.
The new Air filter system I put in seems to help a lot. Always good to check things out though.
Can't make up my mind as I am all dressed up, whether to go out to the mall or not. Need to go by Appliance Store and check so see if they know why my fridge is getting this leak coming down from the freezer to fridge part. Get may a cup of water a day now. Maybe the seal in the freezer door. Hope don't need a new fridge right now. Enough spent this month on Auto.
Need to also take all my throw rugs down to the Laundry. Monday is busy for them so may hold that until tomorrow.
Was a lazy weekend and so need to move around more today. Get some walking in. Stay out of the Bedroom where I have been sneaking in a Nap last few days.
JeanneP

Marilyn

Jeanne ,y ENT has me doing the smae, Rinsing my sinus to clear out the mucous so i won;t have the hoarseness

maryz

Marilyn, it's Google maps that talks to me through my android smart phone. Not up to my ear, just on the seat.

Do you have to have a different ap for that mary.

jane

Sharon....HURRAH for Melanie.  She deserves the trip to Italy, etc.  Cancer free is WONDERFUL!!

Marilyn....It's a separate app already on my android smart phone....just called google maps and it/she talks to you.  You can also get what is called a vent holder for your phone that puts it up near "road" level while driving. It clips to the airvent near the driver's area, at least it would on my car.    I haven't found one yet, but I'm going to look for it.  As it is, one of us holds the phone and can see the map and we both listen to the directions.  I like it because, as Mary says, it's real time.  It took us around the normal route near Tyler, Tx, because there was an accident on the interstate they'd normally have used...so google routed us around it.  Check to see how much data usage you have on your phone.  I have 1 gig and I've never come close to using even 1/2 of that.  You can set up the route while at home on WiFi and they say that saves some data use when you're away from your wifi.

We went over to the iTech place today, and they got my new miniIpad to download my backup.  It turns out we each have an Apple ID, so that was the problem. I was using Ray's.  He also decided to upgrade from his old IPAD3 to the new Air2.  We shouldn't have to worry about either one going "kafluee"  because they're so old.

Heat and high humidity coming in again tomorrow.  Guess it's August in the Midwest.

Marilyn

I have had two wonderful experiences with taking Freckles to visit lately I am very proud of her.  At one of the nursing homes on Saturday my partner and I visited a hospice patient that she seen frequently.Freckles jumped right up on the bed with the patient (the dogs are not supposed to do) I told her to get off but my partner said it was OK that she  really liked to dogs. Well the  patient asked me how old was Freckles so I told her. After the visit  my partner asked me if the patient had asked how old was Freckles and i said yes. Well as it turns out that  patient doesn't speak and has never spoken to my partner during the visits.  Wow!!!

Another experience was at the Memory care Center for Alzheimer's and Dementia patients. I had not been there for 6 or so weeks with Freckles. I went in to one of the units and there was a lady sitting alone at one of the tables; as soon as she saw Freckles she said “ Oh Freckles come here” it is so rewarding to see the patients come out of their shell. One of our group has taught her standard poodle to go Woof Woof after the first stanza of How much is that doggie in the window” on of the  patients at the Memory Care center, sang the whole song after Ruthe  did that.

MaryPage

Oh, I do so love stories like that!  Heartwarming.  Full of life affirming goodness.  Upbeat and charming.  Write a book, Marilyn!  Go on;  do it!

SharonE

Marilyn, how rewarding that must be to see how much Freckles is loved.  As to the music, they say that people who sang or played an instrument will still be able to do that even when they are deep in dementia.  They also say that playing music for them is very soothing.

Thank you Mary Page & Jane for your comments on Melanie. Her cancer was such an aggressive one, we won't think she has really beaten it until 7 years, but every bit is encouraging.

Thank you, Molly, for your kind comments on my teaching SS. I will have the prescribed lesson to cover from our books but I haven't looked at it yet. The idea of commenting on what things have touched me hadn't occurred to me, but will keep that in mind.

Jane, you are getting just too techy!  ;) I sure wish you were nearby to help me with some of the newer devices.  I'm pretty good on the computer but I just haven't branched out.

It is overcast, mid 80's and very humid. Storms forecast for the evening and that's the story of our weather all week.  Better than the 90's, but still very uncomfortable.

My cleaning girl was here today. So glad to have her.  So that and the laundry is done. Going to coast the rest of the week except for taking Ms Frances to the dentist on Thursday + the **@## grocery shopping!

Jeanne, I agree that keeping the air filters changed is very important. I put it on my calendar for every 3 months.

Hi Ginny, Darlene, Joy, and whoever else I've missed.  Sharon

jane

Marilyn..wonderful experiences and such good work.

Miserable night....couldn't stay asleep, so I just had a couple hour nap.  Sure felt good.

Heat and humidity and pollen index climbing, so not doing much here.  I did two loads of laundry and then the kitchen floor, and that's it for today.

I've been watching the Olympics, esp swimming and enjoying that.

Jane

SharonE

Hi Gals, I hope the heat and humidity is breaking a little for you all. Our temps are better (mid 80's) but the humidity is still around 70%!!!

I'm going to the library in a bit to return my books & get some more.  I watched swimming and gymnastics last night. Wow, those gymnastic girls are great!  However, I've now seen pretty much all I want to.

Jane, I hope you got a good night's sleep last night. I did for a change. It's so hard to be productive when you don't.

I hope Mary is still having a great time in Maine area.

Have a good day.  Sharon

maryz

Rockland Maine today. Nice town. Been here twice before for schooner trips, 1990 and @2004. Good memories. Lobster and mussels picnic for lunch. I like mussels better, so very good. Rain this afternoon, first time. Spotty slow internet.  Home Saturday noonish.

90 here and humidity is terrible.  I had to go to WalMart for some things, and the heat and humidity gave me a headache, it's that miserable out there.

Tonight just chilling out and watching Olympics.

Stay cool and safe, Buddies!

Another day of sparkling beauty here at bayside, but just to step outside is to be enveloped in a hot, damp towel.  Most uncomfortable.

Well, my air conditioning is roaring away, and I am flourishing.  Busy reading the newspapers with avidity, and soon will turn to my book.  Have already ordered 2 books from Barnes & Noble this morning and corresponded with my very best friend in all this world, who is also my 1st cousin, in Cincinnati.  We agree on absolutely everything, which is nice, and feel a bit forlornly abandoned by family members who have passed on.  Neither of us is in any condition to travel, so we are well aware we will never see one another again, but we ignore that and have fun reliving stories from the past and keeping up with our individual present.

Hope you each have a perfectly lovely day!

jane

Thunderstorms going through here now, and then the heat and humidity to return.

Ray wants to go to CR, and I've asked him to wait until the heavy t'storms are passed.  I'll go along, just to get out a bit.  He's gotten the new car/truck bug, so I'll be sitting in the current truck with the AC on until he narrows down the choices.  I hate shopping for cars or trucks.

Good morning...Jane. About trading vehicles..I have a Silverado pick up..wanting to trade for a suv..I like Chevrolet Tahoe and also Toyota Segovia.  Just hate the wrangling with salesman.  Darlene

JeanneP

Candy.  Just don't wrangle with the salesmen. I have been buy cars now for 50 years. At first little harder as getting loan. But on last 3 I just go find what I think I want. Usual at 3 places. Take my Checkbook in hand. Ask sit with the Mrg. Say what I think I want to write a check for allowing me to just not have to pay another dime for anything. Twice I had to walk to my car but they came out. 3rd time they met the price. Just to many car places now and computation is high. All the 17s coming in.  I am waiting now and trying to find a 2015 I like. Will be a small one also.
JeanneP

maryz

Good luck with cars. I'm glad I don't have to deal with that again. I'm sure my 2006 Altima will be my last car.

Anchored at Boothbay Harbor with good internet signal. I'm staying on board. Not interested in walking or shopping in town, or taking a walking tour. Lovely day to enjoy, though. I've booked a trip in Southeast Alaska for Margaret and me for next year.  Good discount for booking during a trip.

Happy Thursday, Buddies!
"When someone you love dies, you never quite get over it.  You just learn how to go on without them. But always keep them safely tucked in your heart."

SharonE

Darlene, Jeanne has it right.  My last car I did pretty much the same except that I specified the colors in & out. They had to look all over Charlotte area to find a blue one for me but it came with a sun roof and top of the line sound system, both of which I got for free. It took a while, but it worked.  I'm sure this Avalon will be my last car too. It's a 2011 and only has 28,500 miles on it.

Mary, I'm glad you've booked another trip and will have it to look forward to.

I've had a busy day. Took Ms Frances to the dentist at 11:00, got home at 1:00. Ate and rested a while, then went back out to the grocery. I used the motorized cart. It was triple coupon day, so I saved a bunch.  I've hurt a lot today, so all of it was an effort.  Now I need to go fix dinner. I got a couple lobster cakes and will do hash browns or something, so it won't be hard.

Really hot and humid here too.  Hi to all.  Sharon

Every day now some item in the news, and to be completely honest, some days more than one, serves to remind me how startling are the custom and culture differences in just a couple of generations.  In my day, three year olds were put to bed by seven or seven thirty at night, and under no circumstances were they taken out at night.  Nor would anyone allow a three year old to ride a roller coaster!  Admittingly, a huge nationwide fear of polio, not to mention a small percentage of vehicle owners, kept my peers at home when my own generation was three, but when we were parents we were considered unforgivingly neglectful if we did not have our little ones safely tucked in their little beds rather than out in crowded fair grounds or amusement parks.  I wonder where, when, and how this notion that three year olds could go anywhere at any time and do ANYthing came about!  Astonishing and sad.  Oh, so very sad.

Cottoncandy

Jeanne and Sharon..thanks for the tips. I have a 2015 pick up with only 8000 miles on it. It's hard for me to get up in it..so high...so was thinking of a suv...so not sure how much trade in I can get...cc

JeanneP

Candy. Now try to sell the truck you have yourself. Better to trade with a dealer if you don't have a car.  Now your truck should sell fast. Very popular. Wish I had it myself. I miss the one I had. Like a truck because feel higher up when driving. But as I don't drive long distances now like I use to. Just fly then I just need a small car.
Can't believe it,today to be even warmer and yesterday was 95. With the humidity putting it up to 104 deg. I drove out of town but not until 5:30Pm and was driving back at 9:30pm. Not to crazy at driving at night anymore. Just Semi after Semi. And all the lights on the other side of the Interstate are so bright. Rolled the windows down and was nice and cool though.
Family leave for Connecticut and home tomorrow. Think my GD will be glad to get the 3 children back home.

The headline on our local newspaper this morning says we are in for DANGEROUS HEAT this weekend.  That's what it says, folks!

Chip left early to spend a couple of days in Virginia.  He took the trash and recycling out before he left, so I have no reason to stir out of my lovely a/c.  I will go downstairs to the foyer to fetch my mail late this afternoon, otherwise here I stay!

The Capital newspaper is also full of how popular Pickleball has become all over town.  Seems we have all ages playing it and finding it quite addictive.  Do any of you play?

jane

MaryPage...I don't play, but one of our bridge group has played it for years.  She was a great tennis player, but at 80 says this works better for her.  It sounds as if the heat and humidity Jeanne and I had has now moved on to you.

Cooler here, but the humidity is high and we're both worn out from our trip to the city in the high heat and humidity of yesterday.  Both of us have joints that aren't happy, so we're reading and watching women's Olympic soccer on TV.

Stay cool and safe.

SharonE

Jeanne, I don't drive much at night either. The lights bother me. Nice you got to see your family though.

Mary Page, Pickle Ball is a big thing in retirement communities. We have several courts here, but of course, with my back, etc. I don't play. Would love to if I were in better shape. Not as strenuous as tennis.

My Lori is a big tennis player and is playing in 2 leagues in Chicago. She loves it.

Jane, I'm with you on the heat and humidity. STaying in in the AC.

I did go to a neighborhood coffee one of the neighbors had for a new neighbor. It was nice and so was the new gal who is a relatively young widow. In her 60's, I would guess.  From Atlanta.

No other news here.  I hope everyone is doing well and staying cool.  Sharon

I use to love to play tennis.  Never heard of Pickle Ball. Will have to bring it up on line and see what it is about.
I am not going to complain about our weather . Maybe its hot but just watched the weather report and what a mess Louisiana  is having again. What was it 13 ft. of Rain again. Came down fast. All the flooding again. They are promising us up maybe 3 inches over the weekend. It could happen as it is the Start of the State Fair and it is known for getting rain that week. Rain  will feel good. Everything is so dusty. No rain for almost a month now. Just to hot for me to be out cleaning up outside.  My grass gets cut weekly still. Usually he lets it go much longer this time of year. Surprising it is not dead. However the sad thing is the town has to have over 700 ASH  tree taken down. Some disease has hit. We are know all over as having the best town for Trees. Beautiful over in the University area. No way can they be saved.
JeanneP

Hi Jeanne, hatetothinkof all those trees being taken down but maybe some other tree will take their place,

Glad I saw New Orleans before all the destruction. I still remember how I hated driving at night.

JeanneP

The news is not saying if anything bad happened in New Orleans. Hope not.
You have changed to Blue now and made it much larger.
It is so easy to do but then you have to keep putting the code in every time you post. I think I put it on my short cut. Will see what happens if I find it.

We got a splash of rain last night. Enough to just make the dust stick to my car and mess up the windows.  But it did close down the State fair in Springfield as they got about 4 inch fast. Streets got flooded and all the people there got stuck as could not get out of the gates. So sad. Happened the last 3 years now. And they really need to make some money.
