Oldiesmann: Finally got the AmazonBot situation under control. I basically changed some server settings to tell AmazonBot that it's not allowed to access anything on the site. That should fix the speed issues we've been experiencing lately

Gosh...Mary...glad you weren't hurt..other than probably will be sore a few days...there's crazy drivers out there for sure...CC

Marilyn

Jeanne I don't have to have a license for a service dog and she isn't that small she weighs 37.5 lbs. She can fly as long as I tell them she is a service dog and when they ask what her specialty is I will tell them what she does without revealing the disability. This is all according to the Americans with Disabilities Act. All legal. She does have a vest that says she is a Service Dog, but she doesn't necessarily have to be wearing it.

Sherry the recipe for that Pesto Chicken is as follows. I made my own pesto and left out the pine nuts.
Pesto:
1 cup packed solid with fresh Basil
½ cup extra virgin olive oil
½ Cup Parmesan cheese
I put the cheese and basil in the food processor and slowly poured in the olive oil and pulsed until smooth.

I spread this thickly on 3 Boneless Skinless chicken breasts after I placed them on a pan that I had covered with foil and sprayed with Pam. Baked them at 350 in my convection oven for 40 minutes or until 160° on the meat thermometer.

SharonE

Chicken sounds good, Marilyn. I'm glad you're flying in Sept.  Did you know that you can deduct that with your medical bills from your taxes?  Also all the miles you have driven him.  Too bad about having to drive to the wedding too.

Mary, I commented on FB about the accident, but I never would have thought about leasing a car. Like Jeanne, I would have looked for a good used car.  Might be a good idea though.  Too bad about the bridge though until you find a solution. Good that you'll be gone for a while.

Jeanne, glad it's cooled down a little for you. It's supposed to be 89 here tomorrow, which is cool for us.

I just baked some lemon bars to take to bridge tomorrow. I seem to be a little better.  I just won't be able to assess how well it's working until all the restrictions are off of me and they get me reprogramed and I can try getting out and walking, so sometime after Friday, maybe I'll be able to tell something.

Joy, I hate early dr's appts too!  I try to make them at 10 or later, but for the most part I drive myself.  Of course if you have to take a cancelled appt, there's no choice.  Take care of yourself.  Sharon

JeanneP

Mary.  I have thought of that also. All I see is 3 year leases and now check and see what you insurance will be. They seem to put it up on leased cars. Could be the lease place have a company they recommend.
I only pay 314dollars a year now on mine and I check with them on new cars and it goes up to $1110. That is one reason I dont want a new one.  I don't put miles on a car anymore. To high to have it sitting in driveway
JeanneP

maryz

Thanks for the sympathy and suggestions, Buddies.  I am planning to talk to the insurance folks about possibilities when they get in touch with me.  Also, one of the maintenance guys is interested in buying my car from me.  And one of the women here has a '15 Nissan that she wants to sell - she's supposed to be getting me info on that.  So I have options, and I'm not in a hurry - I won't do anything about replacement until we get back from Alaska.

Good morning, Buddies!

Mary..you have some good options to explore

Marilyn & Sharon...I keep a log of all the miles we drive for medical appts...date...where we went...which doc, etc. and turn it in with my income tax stuff to the preparer.  I know you can also include overnight stays in motels, etc. IF for the medical appt.  We did when we stayed overnight in Iowa City after his cataract and cornea lenses procedures.

I'm off to bridge in a bit and that's all the "work" for today I have planned.

More rain/storms headed our way and the body knows it.

I got a much needed haircut yesterday and added highlights or whatever it is...with the foil.  Much nicer than the only other way I'd had it done...with the cap...--[way back in the day when it was called "frosting."  I remember the guys at work when I first started teaching kidding me about adding "gray" to my hair and said it'd come soon enough from Mother Nature!].and that can be painful!  I'm happy with what she did and will continue it.  It's just some random "carmel" color added that covers some of the gray, but there's still that too.  I've never colored all my hair...it grows much too fast to try to keep up with that, but I'm happy with this.

Have a good Hump Day!

jane

Cottoncandy

Jane..my hair grows to fast to color it all to...right now I'm trying to let the last color grow out and just add highlites to...I have not tried the Carmel...I want something that will enhance the grey....I already walked this morning....not to bad...Darlene

It's almost time to fix my lunch as I'm being picked up for bridge about 12:45.  I haven't decided on what I'll eat except for fresh cantelope chunks and cottage cheese.  Probably a frozen entrée.  Terri will serve a dessert so I shouldn't eat much before going.

I spent the morning picking up more fallen pears.  This tree was here when I arrived and was quite old.  Most years I don't get more that 2 or 3 pears.  I've picked up at least 3 kitchen sized trash cans full over the last few days.  Most have bites from the many squirrels who frequent my back yard!  So my garbage can has been full on trash day for the past couple of weeks.  I have about a dozen without bites or blemishes, so may cut them up and make poached pears which I hope are edible.

Mary, I'm sorry to hear about your car.  My Toyota Corolla is a 2010 and I only have about 43,000 miles on it--mostly from summer trips with Alex and Nick.  I plan to keep it until I'm no longer living!  I'm not driving it, but Tim does use it instead of his truck or car when he takes me to appointments.  I've driven other Toyotas for more than 10 years each.  They are great cars with good gas mileage.

Jane, your new "do" sounds pretty glamorous.  I think you'll enjoy the change.  So far my hair has stayed very dark with little gray, so I'm just going to leave it like it is.  I need a haircut, but this week is way too busy for me, so it's going to be shaggy until I can get to the hairdresser next week.

Darlene, good for you for getting out early to walk.  I used pear pick ups instead of walking this morning.  If there is shade this afternoon on my street after bridge, I might walk a couple of blocks then.

Jeanne, I don't pay much for my car insurance--I've only had one accident in 70 years of driving, so I get a bonus for that.  I have USAA car and home insurance--and have had that since 1958 when Bob and I married.  My home insurance has gone up, though, as my whole neighborhood has been re-assessed.  It's still very moderate compared to other newer neighborhoods.

Sharon, I'm glad to hear you're a "little" better, but I'm hoping for an "ALL WELL" report soon.  Lemon bars sound great and I'm sure your friends will enjoy them.  Have fun at bridge--and good cards, too!

Marilyn, thanks for your recipe for pesto.  I have some basil growing in my little mini garden and will try it.  Good luck with taking Freckles on the airplane.

Joy, I don't like early a.m. appointments either, except with my GP.  All the specialists seem to work out of a large practice and it takes a long time of sitting in the waiting room for a 10:00 a.m appointment.

I'm off to fix and eat lunch.  Have a nice day, Buddies.
Sue

SharonE

Hi Gals.  I guess today is bridge day!  I was hostess, hence the lemon bars for dessert.  We meet at the golf club and eat at their restaurant, but bring in a dessert.  I got the booby prize.  I only had one really good hand!!  But I had fun. We have a new girl in our group and she seems very nice.

Sue, I think your lawn makes more work than pleasure for you!!  All those bags of pears!  Melanie planted some Asian pear trees a few years ago, but the squirrels drive them crazy too.

Mary, I'm glad you have several options on the car.  Are you feeling sore today?

I'll be so glad to go to the dr's on Friday and get reprogrammed and the staples out.  Then maybe I will start feeling decent.

I spent about an hour on the phone with our new internet provider getting John's email address changed.  Now I need to go and send out a mass mailing of the change to all his contacts.

Jane, I"m glad you're up on taking deductions for medical trips as many as you do!  Hope your bridge was better than mine.

Sharon

JeanneP

Mary. Sound like you have good options on getting another car. The ladies in you building would be the one for me.  I did call about one this morning that is on my list but it was sold. Did get a 2015 Nissan tradein this week with only 30000 mls on it local trade on a BMW . it is same as the Nissan Cube but different name .Will go see it tomorrow.

I wish there was a way I could Highlite my hair also. It would have to be stripped to do it. Have lot of silver gray in the front but black from the crown all in the back. No such a thing as a gray colour to highlite. I suppose could use colour but would have to be black over it all. Never do that. Both my girls have the blond HLites put in their brown hair. Looks nice.

I wasn't going to  do one thing today. I kept going into my kitchen and could smell something. traced it to my big pantry. Decided I had to take the whole thing apart and clean down shelves and floor. Took all out. Finely traced it to a bag of Potatoes that I had picked up a Meijers on Tuesday. They were still in the string bag. Poured them all out and found 2 large potatoes so soft and rotting right at the bottom. That was the things smelling. Can't understand how they got them onto the shelf and did not catch them.Potatoes are a horrible smell when rotten.
But anyway . now got the pantry cleaned out. Wiped a few of the Potatoes at the top and tossed the rest out.

I always shop my large shopping at Meijers which is a nice store when it comes to the Fruit and Veg department and the Butcher shop.
JeanneP

jane

This must be the time of year for rotten potatoes.  Ray brought home some Yukon Gold ones and it didn't take but a day or two and they were moldy and soft.  I, too, ended up tossing about 1/2 of them away.

The promised rains didn't appear.  It's to be nice for the next couple of days, but lots of humidity.

jane

SharonE

I've done my knee exercises and made out my grocery list and now cking out my internet sites before I go to the grocery.

I've had rotten potatoes before & I agree that they smell awful. I usually only buy 1 or 2 baking potatoes and a sweet potato. We just don't eat too many.

Jeanne, my condolences on having to clean out your pantry.  Hope you can find the car you want.

Jane, our temps are headed down into the 80's with lower humidity!   Yea!!!  Supposed to storm tomorrow.

My doctor's appt is at 2:00 tomorrow. I hope it isn't storming then.  I seldom can park close to the door.

John just got a new computer and I got his new email address set up yesterday, but he's still having trouble receiving, so I've got to mess with it again!  Sigh!  I did manage to show him how to send a mass message to all his contacts of his change of address so that I didn't have to do it.  He has Windows Live Mail and there's no easy 1 step method to do it. You have to check the box of every contact, put in a comma between, etc.  So I got out of that job.

Mary, how did your friend like her sweater?

Hi to Joy, Ginny, Marilyn, Darlene and any others I've missed.

Oh I just remembered the highlighting discussion.  I have highlights of a dark gold put in my hair. Since it is dark blond, it looks good and camoflages some of the gray. They used to use foil for them but the last time, my gal suggested we go back to the showercap w/ pinholes. She seemed to think it would look better now, so I told her she was the expert and it did turn out fine, so guess that's what she will do in the future.
Sharon

Just wondering...do any of you order books...paperbacks on Amazon...do they offer free shipping? CC

SharonE

Darlene, I order books, both hard and paper at Amazon frequently. They offer free shipping if you meet a certain total purchase amount. I can't remember what that is now.  They also offer a yearly Prime Amazon membership for $30 or so per year. If you sign up for that, all shipping after that is free. I haven't done it because I don't shop there enough to warrant it, but one of my daughters does and orders all kinds of things on there that I wouldn't think of.  With the books, they offer new copies at one price and then used copies at reduced prices. They rate the quality of them.  I use them a lot for Christmas or birthday gifts for the grands and some for us as well.  Sharon

maryz

Darlene, Sharon explained Amazon very well.  One of my daughters has Amazon Prime and has me listed on her membership.  I order a lot of stuff from Amazon, and think it's great.  But then, unlike Sharon, I hate to shop.  LOL

Sharon, my friend liked the sweater, but it turned out smaller than she thinks she'll wear.  I think she's going to give it to a daughter.  It was definitely NOT an easy pattern (as stated on the instructions).

Sue, I know you love your Honda, but I wonder if you're going to be able to handle the straight shift even when you get out of your brace.  I went to automatic years ago when I first started having problems with my knees.

No decisions made here about cars yet.  I'm waiting for the son of the Rogue owner to get back to me with a price and keys so I can look at it and drive it.  This may not get tended to before we leave.  If not - so be it.

Happy Thursday to all the Buddies!

Hi Every Buddy.  Tim's birthday is on the 29th and because he and Kris like to kayak on the river on Saturday's, I took them and Ard to lunch at Longhorn's for his treat (I'd already given him his birthday check).  He had a small steak, Kris and Ard had shrimp, and I had salmon.  All declared their meals to be good and I know I certainly enjoyed mine.

I did laundry and wrote checks this morning before getting ready to go out.  I was glad to get that paper work out of the way.  I'd received a form letter from Village Friends (the organization of volunteers who take me to Kroger and hair cuts).  It seems some of the other elder members are abusing the privilege and using it too frequently.  The President of the group listed a number of transportation options (local taxi companies, city bus, Uber, etc.) that should be used first, although they said they would honor medical appointments if subscribers needed that.  I have been using Kroger trips once weekly and a hair cut every 4-5 weeks.  Tim said he'd call the President of V.Friends and ask her about it.  One elderly woman I play bridge with uses the service at least 4 days a week and I'm sure there are others.  A volunteer is taking me to the Farmer's Market tomorrow and afterwards to Kroger.  That will be my first and only trip this week.

Tim stopped at my bank on the way home so I could get some cash to use the next couple of weeks.  They have a branch on the way home from Tiger Town.

Darlene, I have an Amazon account--son Bill and wife Dawn buy gift certificates at Amazon for me.  I usually buy used paper backs if I can.  They have reasonable prices and the merchants selling them list the condition of them.  I've never been unhappy with the used books I buy from them and most of the places that sell the used ones get them here in a hurry.  One I ordered last week came from Reno, Nevada over night!

Have a nice evening, Buddies, and stay inside if the heat is too high in your neighborhood.
Sue

jane

Sue....I'd think once a week to grocery shop and every couple of weeks for haircuts would be a minimum of what the association should expect.

Every day every week would seem excessive to me if they are going to the same place all the time.  For example, going grocery shopping every day would, to me, be ecessive ise of the service.

We've been fertilizing and watering today.  Even though our part of the state has had flooding, we have not had much rain lately.  It seems to go around us.

Jane

JeanneP

Mary. Ws just listening to the News. Did you see where a man just murdered his wife on a Alaskan Cruise ship. Yesterday I believe. It held up the cruise. they were on a trip with their 3 daughters and some other members of family for a anniversary.  That will be a sad cruise for some of the other people I would think. It was one of the larger cruises. Over 3000 people I think. I don't like them.
I know you will have a great trip.
JeanneP

maryz

Funny, Jeanne - sad for the family, of course.  We'll be going on the American Spirit with American Cruise Lines.  There are only 48 cabins on this ship.  I wouldn't go on one of those monsters.

Beautiful morning here, and I need to get myself going.

I think after my walk, I'll work on the many drawers in my kitchen.  They need a good cleaning out and reorganzing and today may be the day!!  ;)

maryz

jane, that sounds almost like  work.  And you know how we feel about that.

I've spent my morning reading the paper, playing my daily computer games, being on the computer, and watching the lovely slow rains on my flowers.   :smitten:

Thanks on the info for Amazon Books...I read a lot..And do use our Library..but sometimes can't find what I'm looking for there...I would order used for myself...still HOT..here..and dry..I think 7 straight 100 plus temps..so far...wishing all a great weekend..CC

maryz

Darlene, I don't remember if either Sharon or I mentioned loans of ebooks.  Amazon and probably your local library have ebooks to borrow for no cost.  That might be worth investigating for you.  Check with your local library.

Mary. Now that ship where it happened had over 3000 passengers on it. I didnt know that they had them going to Alaska that big.  What you are using are the ones for me. Last cruise I took had 3000 plus and I will never did it again.
JeanneP

SCFSue

Darlene, I forgot to mention e-books, too.  I have a Kindle which son Bill gave me a few years back and I have all of Jane Austen's books on there (they are free!) and also buy used ones mostly in paper back, but occasionally for the Kindle, depending on the author.

Jeanne, I'm not interested in going on a ship that large.  Several hundred is enough for me!

Mary, thanks for the reminder about Amazon's e-books.  I need to find my charger for my Kindle, though.  I know it's around here somewhere.  I prefer reading a REAL book, but the Kindle will do in a pinch!  When are you leaving for Alaska?  That's on my bucket list, too.

Jane, I hope your walk was pleasant and I wish you well on cleaning out kitchen drawers.  That's not my idea of fun!  I think one 97 y.o. is one culprit with the multiple requests per week.  She goes to several Bible studies (and teaches one for women at the county jail).  I know she has a son and a daughter who live here in town and I'm thinking they ought to be helping her out.

It's past my nap time, but I am thinking I'll lie down with a book until time to fix supper.

Have a nice afternoon and evening, Buddies.
Sue

maryz

Sue, I'll let everybody know how this trip goes (of course).  I've really liked the American Cruise Line trips (this will be my 4th), and it's very friendly to singles and those of us with mobility issues.

Hi Gals. Back from the Dr. Got my staples out and tape off and all reprogrammed. I think it is right this time, but she said as my back heals up, the wire might move a hair's width and throw everything off and then I will have to come back in for her to re-in put the necessary program.  Of course, I won't know if this program will work yet. I haven't walked or been on my feet enough, but will tomorrow.  Also told me I had to wait 3 more days for a shower, so called my beautician and she's going to wash my hair tomorrow for me so I can go to church Sunday.  Eight days is too long to go between shampoos.  Cross your fingers tomorrow that it all works for me.

Our electricity went out this aft. just as I was about to leave, but apparently it was something to do with Pulte. It came back on in a couple hours.

Other than river cruises, I don't want near a ship!  I've done 3 and had to be so medicated it was stupid. No more.

I forgot about Kindle since I don't have one.  My daughter reads on her I-phone all the time. Downloads them from the Chicago City Library so can get practically anything and for free.  I think her app is Over Drive.

My weather alert sylstem just came on and said a storm was coming up and it is getting dark, so better get off.  Sharon

Marilyn

I took Freckles to the vet this morning for her first Senior Blood panel, it was all just fine with a little elevation for the pancreas so I have to find her a food that has single digits of crude fat. She also has a UTI so is on amoxicillin for two weeks then another urine sample. I stayed there at the vet and waited for the results since I  live 15 miles from the vet.

maryz

Marilyn, sorry your baby has a UTI, but he'll get better soon.

Sharon - Hooray!!  Showers soon!  I forgot to ask. how did your airport transport go on your recent trip?

We've had lovely rain off and on all day today.  It's been overcast and cool and I've got a much-needed half-inch of rain in my gauge.  The high today was only around 80!
