Oldiesmann: Finally got the AmazonBot situation under control. I basically changed some server settings to tell AmazonBot that it's not allowed to access anything on the site. That should fix the speed issues we've been experiencing lately

Last night we watched the Oscar nominated WWII movie, Hacksaw Ridge.  I was not looking forward to it, but it turned out to be better than I expected.  It's the true story of a young man, Desmond Doss, who is a conscientious objector, but joins the Army to work as a combat medic.  Most of the movie is about him trying to gain acceptance as a noncombatant, and all the obstacles he faced.   Only the last half hour takes place on Hacksaw Ridge, which is a famous WWII battle between the Americans and the Japanese.  At the end of the movie, it showed real interviews with Desmond Doss, who died in 2006.  He was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor.

My husband is anxious to see the British war movie, Dunkirk, that's playing in theaters right now.  Because it will be a long time before it is available on DVD or TV, we may go to see it.

JeanneP

Now Dunkirk is already out on DVD. My Library have it and already has a 27 people with name on order. I am going to go and see it tomorrow. My TV not big enough to enjoy. Most of family seen it and say so good.  Made over 29 Million Dollars over opening weekend.  I know quite a lot about the thing happening and just want to see if they stay to it right.
JeanneP

Marilyne

JeanneP - I read online, that Dunkirk would not available on DVD or Netflix, until November?  Maybe the people on your library wait list are just lining up for the eventual release?  I hope you have a chance to see it in a theater before then?  I plan to go some day next week.

Tonight we plan to watch another movie, out of the many that we have recorded.  I don't know what it will be yet, but I can take my pick out of about twenty! :D A couple of them are oldies like A Place in the Sun, and A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, which both sound good to me at the moment.

I did go to see Dunkirk today. It is very loud . They did a good job in researching but it really does not have anything else in the film other than the showing of the air fighting and the evacuation. Hardly a word spoken. I was thinking that there would be a little more showing of other things that happened at that time.
Now the DVD is out. Library do have it. Also can be bought at Barnes and Noble and I suppose Amazon have it.  It is $15 now but it will be cheap after a month or so. Now a big DVD seller. To loud to be played on a Home TV. Needs a big screen. Don't see Netflix even getting many orders to show it.  Needs a Theatre Screen.

Jeanne - I was wrong . . . the DVD has been released.  I wonder why they released the DVD only a week after the movie opened in theaters?  Could be because it's a British movie, and has already been playing in the UK for a number of months?
Well, I guess now I'll just wait for it to show up on Netflix, which should be soon! :)

Marilyne

Last night's episode of Game of Thrones, was a good one . . . very exciting! Other than that, I haven't watched much TV in the past week.

We're still kind of zoning out on the HGTV house hunter style of shows.  Something about them is really habit forming.  We like the ones where the people are looking for a house or condo, on or near a beach.  There are now about ten different shows featuring beachfront or lakefront living.

A new and different HGTV show that has recently started, is called My Lottery Dream Home.  It's another reality show about people buying a home, but these are lucky people who have won at least a million dollars or more in one of the American lotteries!  The thing I like about the show, is that the buyers are just ordinary people, who suddenly hit it big!  They seem genuinely grateful and don't go after anything lavish or extreme.  It's an entertaining show that also rings true, IMO.

Until They Sail - 1957:  I was surfing through the schedule of TCM movies, and noticed this one playing at the impossible hour of 3:00 am. I recorded it, just because I saw that Paul Newman, was the male star.  I think this was one of his first movies, and one that I had never seen and don't recall ever hearing about?

Last night we watched it, and I really liked it a lot.  It's a good love story, that takes place in New Zealand, during WWII. Joan Fontaine, Jean Simmons, Piper Laurie, and Sandra Dee, play four NZ sisters, who are coping by themselves, as the War progresses.  Two are married, and two aren't, but all the men are in Europe, serving in the War.  Then, an American Marine/Navy base is opened in NZ, and of course, that's when all the drama starts!

Hey, Marilyne, I just found the Lottery Dream HOme show, and we watched two or three episodes.  The guy is fun!
I'll try not to get hooked on this show, as I used to with some of the older ones.  We have this goofy channel on our DISH programming, called PIXL.  It has shows like the Hallmark shows.  "Chic Flicks", corny but kind of fun.
We've watched dozens!  To you get PIXL on Demand or any of your other channels?

Marilyne

Tome - Glad you like My Lottery Dream Home.  It's a different concept from the usual run of HGTV programming.  I also get a kick out of David, and I enjoy "meeting" the lottery winners.  They seem so real, compared to the house hunting couples on the other shows.  It's nice to see people who are truly appreciative and grateful.

JeanneP

Marilyne

OH! wish library had that "Till we Sail". think I remember it. They don't have it. Bet it was just out Before things went to DVD type. Library get rid of all the VCR 2 years ago.
JeanneP

JeanneP

It looks like Until we sail. was 1957. Amazon now say a demand for the new DVD now it. It was on VCR in Black and white. Now in Colour. $17.99 Will see if Library will buy it.
JeanneP

Marilyne

JeanneP - You can go to your On Demand, to the "search" option.  Then spell out the words Until We Sail, and you will probably find the movie available to watch any time you want to see it.  Sometimes the cable company charges $2.99 for the oldies, and sometimes they are free.  If a movie has been shown on TCM, it will be available to watch.

maryz

The movie Until They Sail is available On Demand - from TCM, free until 8-16-17.

JeanneP

I just have the Cheapest TV on the Cable. Never have tried using On Demand. Will see if I can do it.  I need to go talk to Cable anyway. Internet and my WiFi Ipad just working to slow.

I read an interesting article in the entertainment section of my newspaper, about the overabundance of movies and series shows that are now, or soon will be, available from the internet giants -  Amazon, Netflix, Apple, Hulu and Google.  They are literally taking over television viewing, and are now competing with each other, to try to produce the most and the best, as quickly as possible.  Unfortunately, the regular old network and cable channels can't possibly compete on an even field anymore.  The Silicon Valley internet companies have so much money, that they can afford the best writers and the best actors.  According to this article, HBO, Showtime and the other movie channels, are struggling to keep up, and will probably not do well with their Fall lineup of shows.  It will be interesting to see how it all turns out. :-\

While realizing this is "summertime" and TV shows are all in re-runs, there hasn't been a whole lot of new programming on Netflix, Amazon.  I don't get Hulu, my daughter uses it, and likes it.   I watch a lot of the British shows that run on Netflix/Amazon.  Great acting!  My book club (the Mystery one) that met last Thursday, got to talking about the actors/actresses on these Brit
programs, the quality of those shows, and I think most of our members watch Netflix/Amazon exclusively.  The local TV channels are re-running re-runs (lol)! PBS is in its familiar Pledge mode, and even the Brit mysteries on there, are on hiatus.  BBCA showed the final episode of Broadchurch on Weds or Thurs.    I'm going back and watching the early seasons of Grantchester.  Umm, that Vicar is so good looking! Some of the stuff being previewed on Network TV just looks terrible. I can hardly wait till "This is Us" returns.  I grew bored with The Black List and Blind Spot, although I enjoyed the 1st couple seasons.  Can still live with NCIS (original one). A lot of the PBS shows won't premier until 2018.

JeanneP

I just loved "Grantchester" saw the last show a week ago. Wish they would do more of it but doubt they do.hard to show him leaving the Church but that is the only way . He really is a looker. Not seen him in anything else. Going to have to Google and see if he is any movies. I have always enjoyed watching Robeson Greene in lots of things.  I know That James Norton was in the Soap in UK. Eastenders. I use to watch that for years but not seen for awhile.
JeanneP

Tomereader1

Jeanne, I think Grantchester will be back.

Jerry Lewis Entertainer dead at age 91

JeanneP

I didn't realize he was that old. I didn't care for his humor but many did.

Now I have found 4 DVD at the library that James Norton is in.  One is a new. "Lady Chatterles Lover". Should be entertaining.Wonder if in colour. Just came out in 2015.
JeanneP

Marilyne

Oh dear, another entertainment icon is gone!

Jerry Lewis today,
Dick Gregory yesterday,
Glen Campbell last week
Sam Shepard the week before

I liked them all, and remember them well.
May they all Rest in Peace.

FlaJean

Last night we watched an oldie---"The Inn of the Sixth Happiness" with Ingrid Bergman and Curt Jurgens.  It's a long movie but a really good one.  I've always liked both those actors.  Curt Jurgens was  excellent in the movie "The Enemy Below" with Robert Mitchum.  I don't usually like those type of movies but that one was really good.  Watching that movie last night reminded of what good actors they were.

JeanneP

Now I remember that movie. The inn of TSH . Long time ago. See if library have it. Maybe was out on just vcr.

Good evening still raining here.

FlaJean, I am watching that storm also. Thanks for asking about Jess, he is doing lot better,  A little over a year ago the doctors said he would never walk again, but now he can use a can.  They did a miracle with there treatments, in that Orland Hospital.  A few months ago I also watch the that Inn movie.  I know I sound old, but they just do not make them like they use too.   Also the actors were great.

I didn't see that The Inn of the Sixth Happiness, was playing this week.  It's been about 40 years since I saw it, and I'd love to see it again. I'll look for it on "Search", and see if it's available. Tonight, I recorded On a Clear Day, You Can See Forever, starring Barbra Streisand and Ives Montand. (TCM). I think the date was 1970?  I remember see it in a theater back then, and thought it was quite good, and very thought provoking. I'll probably watch it tomorrow night.

I mentioned in another discussion, that the new season of Dancing With the Stars, will be starting in about a week.  One of the "stars" this time, will be Drew Scott, of The Property Brothers.  Although that's one of the shows on HGTV that I don't watch, I have seen him and his twin brother on other shows.  He was very good hosting the Rose Parade, last New Years Day.  I haven't watched DWTS for a couple of seasons, but I think I'll give it a look this time around.

Gloria de - I'm glad that Jess is doing so well!  I hope that some day, he will be able to throw away the cane, and walk on his own.

FlaJean - I hope your grandson is also doing well?  I've read very encouraging things about the immunotherapy.

FlaJean

Marilyne, I watched the movie on Netflix.  It was inspiring.  Also watched "the great gatsby" with Robert Redford, Mia Farrow and Sam Waterston.  It was not inspiring but left me with the same feelings as Nick when he talks of the decadent actions of that society.  I think the remake with DiCaprio is probably much more exciting but I guess the story line still ends the same.  I saw the trailer of the remake.

Lindancer

Marilyne, i will be watching DWTS, when it starts.  This year I know none of the dancers except one of the twins.  I thought last year was one of there best.  that is the only TV new TV show I watch.  Other wise it is the old timers for this old timer.  When i can not sleep, I like a good comedy.

I missed the announcement.  Who are the Stars on the new season of DWTS?

I don't usually watch "America's Got Talent" but began doing so when our newspaper told about a 13-year-old Oklahoma ventriloquist being chosen for the live broadcast auditions. One of the judges at her live audition sent her immediately to the performance competition and, now, she has been voted into the Finals (in 2 weeks).
Hooray for the local gal (she's from a small town not far from where I live).

JeanneP

Remind me to watch that.I never really watch "America got Talent" but a Ventriloquist are my favourite things to watch. She must be good. There are very few people that can do it good.
