Marilyne, we have one of those Apple TV (similar to Roku) and it has HBOGO. It has series and movies.  I'm going to look for True Detectives.  That sounds like something we would like (especially my husband).  We stopped watching Crossing Lines.  It got more and more far fetched and nothing to lighten up the story.

Marilyne

FlaJean and maryz - I have to warn you that True Detective is a dark drama.  Not so much violence, but just the story itself.  I was very impressed with both Matthew McConaughey, and Woody Harrelson, who play the two detectives.  The whole cast was incredible, as far as the acting was concerned.  I sometimes marvel at how many wonderful actors there are out there.  Most I have never heard of.

Nothing on TV is as dark and dramatic as Bloodline!  Last night we watched the final episode from Season #2, and I felt truly depressed when it was over. Usually script writers give you something to hang on to, in hopes of a satisfactory conclusion for at least some of the characters.  Not so with Bloodline.  The best word to describe the story, is hopeless. :(

Tomereader1

Hubby and I just watched "Can-Can" from 1953.  Wow, was everyone so young back then?  Beautiful color, I'm sure they recolorized it.

Marilyne

Tome - Can-Can, is a fun musical, as are all the happy and colorful musicals from the 1940's and '50's.  I was scrolling through TCM the other day, and came across an old Betty Grable musical called Song of the Islands, from 1942. Silly as they are, I like those old forgotten musicals, especially anything having to do with Hawaii.

I was struck by the beauty and clarity of the Technicolor!  I doubt that that old relic of a movie has been recolorized, because it was not a major production, and not one of Betty's best.  It was silly, but entertaining . . . starring Victor Mature, as Betty's love interest, Thomas Mitchell as her father, (Scarlett's father in GWTW), and Jack Oakie, as the comedy relief.  I especially enjoyed seeing the real Hilo Hattie!!  She sang and danced to the Hawaiian song, "The Cockeyed Mayor of Kaunakakai".

Sometimes we need to watch a mindless, attractive movie, to take our mind off of all the serious stuff.  Definitely not a waste of time. :)

Oh! I loved those Old movies that Jon Hall and Dorothy Lamour made where they were living on the South Sea Islands . Bamboo Huts. The sea. Beach, Me in a Sarong.
Use to dream of going to one. Did make Hawaii a few years ago.  Was a little to commercial. Spoiled my dream.

Goodness, I think I am hearing Thunder in the Distance. Hope we get some rain.

I looked up True Detectives - it was on Amazon, and even with Prime, there was a charge for the season.  So, at least for now, I'll have to skip it.

Did anyone else watch the new/old game shows on ABC Sunday night?    I really enjoyed "Pyramid" and liked "Celebrity Family Feud" pretty well - although that grinning silly MC annoys me.   Didn't stay with "Match Game" because some of the questions were almost pornographic.
Rosie O'Donnell was on "Pyramid" and seems to be a Regular on "Match Game".  She did well on both shows - and seemed to be the only celeb with any sense on "Match Game".

I don't care for the mysteries most of you like, so I'm glad to have some summer replacements for the dramas - although some of them aren't returning.

Marilyne

Callie - I didn't know about the return of the old game shows, in a new format!  Sounds very entertaining. I wonder if "Hollywood Squares" will be featured?

maryz - I agree with you on not wanting to pay for something on Amazon, when you aren't sure if you will like it or not. "True Detective" will eventually be free on one of the many different viewing options.  It's available On Demand now, but you have to subscribe to HBO to see it.

JeanneP

I again. Different. I just can't stand to watch the Game shows along with things like. The Bachelor and then the one with the women choosing. Now this current one all the men are in love with her.  I do watch wheel of Fortune. Have for years. I am quite good on that. Doubt would be good on the show with the buzzer. The Millionaire I can watch. Law and Order I stick with also. Big on the Cooking shows and most Masterpiece Theatre.
JeanneP

CallieOK

JeanneP,  these Game Shows are new ABC Sunday night shows.  The "old familiar" format is basically the same as it was back in the 60's/early 70's.  Wish I could remember who the emcees were back then but all I can come up with is "Gene" for "Match Game" and "Allen/Alan" (maybe) for "Pyramid".  I can mentally "see" the one who did "Family Feud" but no name at all.

Marilyne

Callie - the original host of Family Feud was Richard Dawson.  I remember that  he kissed all the ladies, on every show! :-*
I think the "Gene" on Match Game, was Gene Rayburn??

CallieOK

Marilyne, I think you are right for both.

CallieOK

Wasn't the "Alan" who hosted " Pyramid" married to Betty White?

maryz

Allen Ludden was the host of some game show and was married to Betty White.  I don't know about Pyramid.  You'll have to check IMDb.

CallieOK

Maryz,   BINGO!  Allen Ludden is who I was thinking of - but could NOT come up with that last name!!!  Thank you    :)

Actress OLivia deHaviland is 100 years old today, July 1, 2016

Marilyne

Thank you Chia, for posting a 100th birthday photo of the lovely Olivia de Haviland.  Her most memorable movie was Gone With The Wind, where she won the Best Supporting Actress award, playing the role of Melanie Wilkes. She is the last living actor from that great film. Other notable roles were The Heiress, (Best Actress Award), The Snake Pit, To Each His Own, and many more.

junee

Great photo of Olivia de Haviland. One of the wonderful actresses of the past and doesn't she look great for that age.

Chia

Junee..I am not sure if that photo is that current of Ms. deHaviland ;)

I was looking for something to watch last night, and scrolled through the list of hundreds of shows and series available on Netflix.  I finally settled on a British series that I had never heard of, titled Inspector Morse.  We watched an episode, and liked it enough that we plan on watching more.

This morning I Googled the show, and was surprised to see that it was shown here in the US, on the PBS Mystery Series, between 1988 and 2002.  I'm surprised that we never saw it back than, but I'm sure that some of you probably did?  I could tell by the absence of cell phones and computers, that the show was older than most series we now get on Netflix and Amazon.

JeanneP

Marilyne.  Insp. Morse. shows on Will Master Theatre was on for years. Everyones favourite. You can get all the DVD at your Library.  Now we are running a New  Series 4 on WILL on Sundays nights at 8. PM seems to be every other Sunday. They are Called "Endeaver" starts with Morse as a young man just starting out. Very Good also.  I love them because I know Oxford Area well and the shows are  made on the streets and the University . That is what is good about a lot of British Shows. There are a few going where I know all the areas as close to my growing up area.

Tonight, we watched the first show in a new detective series, now playing on Amazon, called Bosch.  This first season was adapted from three of Michael Connelly’s novels: City of Bones, Echo Park, and The Concrete Blonde. I've never read any of Connelly's books, but AJ likes them, so we decided to give the show a look.

It was okay, but a little too graphic and dark for my taste.  I prefer the show we watched last night -Inspector Morse - so we'll likely follow both shows for now.

After "Bosch" was over, we switched over to TCM, and watched the movie, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.  It was fun and entertaining, as usual!  I like Russ Tamblyn, Howard Keel and Jane Powell.

JeanneP - the show Endeavor sounds good.  I'll definitely take a look at it.

FlaJean

I watched Inspector Morse when it was on PBS years ago but also recently watched it again on Netflix.  After Inspector Morse series ceased, the series was continued with his Sargeant "Robbie" Lewis, the Inspector Lewis series which is also on Netflix.  PBS is coming out with the very last and new Inspector Lewis episodes in August, I think.

Marilyne, the only way I can look at series that are considered "dark" is if there is occasional levity to release the tension.  But maybe if there is some lightness the series isn't considered "dark"?  I can read books that I would never be able to see in a movie because the visuals impact me too much.

Sandy

I am watching True Detective on HBOGO,
Suits (from the beginning) on Amazon,  and
Hemlock Grove on Netflix.

I have finished watching season 2 of Bloodline...
"Suits" is not dark,   (yet) but all the rest are but none
are so dark and very funny and extremely interesting,  as
Six Feet Under,  which I am already re watching all five
seasons of ...

I am am never without something good to watch in between
my regular shows and sometimes a golf tournament,
or two.

I stuck with watching Series 2 of "Six feet Under" last night or at least 3 of the 5 disc. (3hrs) I still have 2 and then I have Series 3 of it. Would be another 6 hours. Don't know if I will carry on with Series 4.  Getting sort of old.  Never had any show where the F word is used so much. At first one could get use to it but now sort of over done.

Interesting, that so many of us who post in this discussion, do most of our TV watching on Netflix, Amazon, HBOGO or On Demand. Kind of makes you wonder if commercial broadcast shows will some day be completely phased out?  I guess that could never happen, because of constantly changing world news events, political stuff and local news.  There will always be channels like CNN, MSNBC and Fox.  However, I don't see much of a future for ABC, CBS and NBC.

I'm going to watch another episode of Bosch, tonight, and then will continue on with Ray Donovan.  Has anyone besides me, watched that series over the years? (Showtime).  It's not my favorite, but I'm hooked!  I very much like Jon Voight!

I read an article online yesterday, Marilyne, that was about cable TV is dying.  I watch some sports events on cable/commercial TV but now mostly watch subscription TV such as Netflix, Amazon (prime), Acorn (British shows), HBO, etc.  Most of commercial TV seems to cater only to much younger audiences that like shows that I just can't care for.  I am even giving serious thought to dropping Time Warner and its inflated cost.

Marilyn.  Oh! I think those regular shows will stay on just as long. I for one never go to the ones you have to pay for. I think that cable cost enough without out the others. Most of what show will sooner or later come out in DVD and can then watch by getting them at the Library.
Can then watch all at one time without a series once a week.  I am just not a big TV watcher and so all the regulars get me by.  Commercials however do drive you crazy
I have friends paying up to $180 a month for TV . Now saying they will go up another 20%

"Now saying they will go up another 20% " ---  What will the market bear?

But it's not surprising. Take a good complete look at your Service providers bill.  Read all those little things that have nothing to do with your actual service.  Politicians try to hide their fees/charges/taxes/ sur-charges/ other/  by "hiding" them in service charges.

The politically popular $15 / hr minimum wage will drive all wages up proportionately, and that will be passed on to all  - including retirees with fixed income. Not all retirees get COL increases.

Looked like all regular programming on local channels was kind of suspended, probably due to the Holiday.  There were a few "new" shows, but really, who would watch some of them?  I did like the "Houdini & Doyle" series, which was only a few episodes long, and last night was the "Finale".  Don't know for sure if that signals it won't be coming back. I think I missed the first episode but caught allthe rest.  During the day yesterday, we kind of watched old stuff from our Dish:  The Firm; No Way Out and then late, we switched back and forth to the various Fireworks displays; NY, Boston and one locally here in Big D.   Then about 11:00, it was as if God was laughing at we poor mortals, a massive thunderstorm came through with lightning to surpass fireworks shows and thunder that boomed so loud and so often,  it would nearly shake one out of bed!  Then the rain came in torrents, hopefully to put out any residual embers/sparks from anyone setting off Illegal fireworks in the general area.  Rain finally stopped about 2:00 AM and by then I was wide awake.
