Callie - thanks for telling me about White Christmas, on AMC.  I recorded it last night, and will watch it sometime this week.
I rarely check AMC or other commercial channels, because hubby won't watch a movie that is interrupted. ::) ::)  I can watch WC myself, or if he wants to see it, we can scroll through the commercials.
I did check, and saw that It's Wonderful Life, is playing On Demand, but it's a pay for view. :-\

CallieOK

Scrolling through commercials is, IMO, the best thing about recording on the commercial channels.  So glad you were able to record WC.

Wish I'd known a couple of weeks ago that you hadn't found "It's a Wonderful Life".  It was on a couple of commercial channels.

Lindancer

I watched Going My Way last night and then The Bishops Wife. To day I watched Glen Ford and Betty Davis I can not think of the name, but she was Apple Annie, right now I am to  tired and lazy to go look up the name.

Marilyne, I refuse to watch anything that is "pay per view".  I pay more than enough to TWC just to get the channels that I want and refuse to pay even more for a movie on top of that...particularly one that is as old as It's a Wonderful Life.  And I feel the same way about Amazon Prime.  I pay enough just for the membership fee...I refuse to pay extra for the movies.

Our PBS station had the Part 2 episode of The Hollow Crown on last night.  A trilogy of Shakespeare's history plays.  Well acted, well staged, but I didn't care for Benedict Cumberbatch's portrayal of Richard III.  He made him look like a "half-wit".  Something I feel fairly certain that the real Richard was not.  Cumberbatch, who plays Sherlock Holmes on PBS, also, is a good actor but sometimes indulges in "over" acting and was downright "hammy" in Part 2, IMO.   :)  Some reviews say that his portrayal in Part 3 is much better and gives it a big "thumbs up".  I'm looking forward to that.

I'm falling behind on my TV viewing, and will have to catch up after the New Year.

I haven't seen, The Hollow Crown, but sounds like a series I will eventually enjoy.  (I think my two PBS channels are still doing "pledge week", but I'm not sure?)  I saw Benedict Cumberbatch, in The Imitation Game, and thought he was very good.  I think he might have won the Oscar that year, over Idris Elba? (How quickly we forget!) ::)

Gloria de - I also like Going My Way.  Bing Crosby, was truly a good actor, as well as having that beautiful voice. My favorite is The Bell's of St Mary's, where he once again plays Father O'Malley.  I love the ending, when they sing the title song.  It always brings tears to my eyes.

Good Afternoon....

Well "The Man in the High Castle" is starting it's second season on Amazon...

I have not seen the first season,  but I thought that today would be a good day to start watching that.

I have heard that it is very,  very good.  It is
about  " A glimpse into an alternate history of North America. What life after WWII may have been like if the Nazis had won the war. "

How things can change when our history
takes a sharp different approach to a life style
that we have been very use to.

(Kinda creepy ...   but of course,  we all know that this could never happen to us )
    :'(

So that is what will keep me occupied for a while.

Sandy - I hope you like The Man in the High Castle? I really liked it, and I'm looking forward to the new season. It did take me a couple of episodes to get all the  characters straight.  I didn't think I would care for the premise of this series - the Alternate Universe, or "what if"?  However,
I'm old enough to remember WWII, and even though I was a little girl, I worried a LOT about what would happen if our enemies won the war.  that's what prompted me to watch it, and I'm glad I did.

Sandy

I didn't think that I would like it either...  But now I do think that it is an important series for me to watch...

I never think that our lives are going to change,   but now I wonder....    So I think that this is an important series for me to become familiar with.

Since this is "Television Today", I'd like to add a quick note
to anyone planning to buy or receive a new TV for Christmas.  I purchased a SmartTV and I love it.  But, heed this, a lot of the ads for TV's are specifying "LED TV", at very, very low prices.  That does NOT mean it is a SmartTV.  If it an LED with SmartTV, the ad will say so in the information about the TV.  I just nearly bought an extra, smaller screen TV for the bedroom, but quickly caught onto the fact that it was NOT a SmartTV.  If you don't need or want the Smart applications, some of the TV prices, even some larger (40") screens are very well priced this holiday shopping season.  Just wanted to put this SmartTV info here in a buyer beware effort.

Marilyne

I looked at my Comcast On Demand, for Christmas movies, and did find most of them!   For anyone who is interested . . . when you go to OD, you'll see an icon that says, Holiday Moviethon.  When you click on it, all the movies are listed.  Some are free, and others are Pay-per-view.

The free ones are Miracle on 34th Street, Christmas in Connecticut, A Christmas Story, (That's the one about Ralphie, who wants a Red Ryder BB gun). It's a Wonderful Life, is a pay-per-view, as is Holiday Inn. A more recent one, is The Family Stone, which I think is pretty good. It's classed as a "dramedy".(comedy and drama.)  A good cast of stars . . . Diane Keaton, Craig T Nelson, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Claire Danes.

Tome - Thanks for the info on the Smart TV vs. the LED TV.  We're planning to buy a smart TV after the first of the year, so I appreciate your input on the subject.

Marilyne

Jackie - Thanks for posting about the Last Tango in Halafax, Christmas special.  The link didn't come up for me, but I'll check my PBS channels, and see if it's playing here?

I'm still thinking about the old Christmas movies from the 1940's.  :)  I saw one listed that I had forgotten, and if it's On Demand, I will definitely watch it.  It's called Remember the Night, 1940, and stars Barbara Stanwyck, Fred MacMurray, and Sterling Holloway.  A couple of years ago, Chia, (one of our S&F members), told me about the movie, and I watched and really enjoyed it.

There is one sequence that I know you will all like.  Barbara S. playing the piano, and Sterling Holloway, singing the song, "When You Come To the End of a Perfect Day".  Yes, that's the same Sterling Holloway, who did so many voiceovers for the Disney films. (Winnie the Pooh, Kaa the Snake, and the Cheshire Cat, as well as many others.  His tenor voice is quite unique, and this song is beautiful.  Here it is on YouTube.

JEANNE P.....
....maybe it will come around in time for next Christmas.....

...as for Mrs Browns Boys, think that is an acquired taste, like Marmite," you either love it or hate it..." if you can take the bad language....but I do laugh at the wit of Brendan O'Carroll playing the part as a woman, and some of the messes he-she gets herself into.........

MARILYNE...
....it was only a 40 second trailer, it didn't show much....

JeanneP

Yes. One can only take a little of Mrs Browns boys but he is so funny. So use to hearing bad language in Movies and from the Teenagers here anymore that have to tune it out.
Now has Last Tango 4 already been on you TV?   At the end of Season I know that the one Gay partner who got pregnant got killed but I thought that the baby was O.K and came to live with them. Didnt seem to show it in the last series

CallieOK

Marilyne,  "Heads Up" !!     "It's A Wonderful Life" is listed on NBC tonight in my newspaper tv guide.

Marilyne

Thanks again Callie!  I'll record and watch, as I did with "White Christmas".  I saw that IAWL was playing On Demand, and I think on Amazon, but both were pay-per-view. :(

I finally bought the DVD of "The Lemon Drop Kid", starring Bob Hope, Marilyn Maxwell, and lots of character actors from that era.  It's a Damon Runyon story, along the lines of his "Guys and Dolls". The song "Silver Bells" was introduced in this movie.  I mention it every year, but no one seems to remember it?  Unfortunately, it's never shown on TV anymore.

CallieOK

Marilyne,  How interesting about the Bob Hope movie.  I vaguely remember one with that title - but didn't remember anything about the story.
I wish there were more Bob Hope movies being shown.  Guess he was too subtle for the "Wham! Bang! Shock!" that passes for humor today .

Son/dil gave me Netflix on my t.v. for Christmas. Haven't had time to watch anything or do much searching, but  I'm looking forward to some "binge" watching during January and February.  Planning to start with "The Crown" and have also put "A Year With The Gilmore Girls' on my list.

Vanilla-Jackie

Marilyne.....
...hope this is bringing back good memories.....I remember this film but haven't seen it for a long time.....

Merry Christmas Everyone!
Lots of holiday movies on last night, but we had the TV Yule Log burning all evening, accompanied by all the familiar Christmas carols.  We had a houseful of people, so it was nice to have the log burning, and the music playing in the background. We recorded It's a Wonderful Life, and will watch it tonight. Today we'll be going to our son's house for dinner.  It will be fun to visit with our dil's family, as well as the grandkids and many of their friends.

Wishing you all a warm and wonderful Christmas Day!

JeanneP

Don't forget that they are showing ( The widwives) Cristmas show on tv tonight. Some may need to tape .
JeanneP

would you believe I just finished watching Heidi, it Shirley Temple all day. This is the first year I  did not see the 1947 Miracle  On 34th St. I found it on HBO, which I do not have. I plan later to watch my tape of One Special Night, it is one of my favorite with James Garner and Julie Andrews Everyone of my neighbors have gone out, so it is very quite around here. Merry Christmas to all my friends in here.

Marilyne

Gloria de - Merry Christmas to you too!  I also missed "Miracle on 34th Street".  It didn't play on TCM this year.

Jackie - Thanks for that YouTube video of Bob Hope and Marilyn Maxwell.  As I mentioned, I finally bought the DVD of "The Lemon Drop Kid".  It's such an cute and cleverly done movie, I think.  I don't know why it's never shown on any of our channels, either free or pay?  The song, "Silver Bells", is played a lot on all radio and TV music stations.

JeanneP

Was poring down all day so just stayed and talked to most family on phone.

Some good public television on today.
One I didn't know had been made.
(Pollyanna) my favouritebook when really young. I even got a few tears watching it.
Had the Midwifes on but phone wrang at the start. Watched last 15 min.

I watched what is supposed to be the last episode of "Longmire" on Netflix this afternoon.  AAARRGGGHHHH!  I can only hope the powers-that-be change their minds and continue with another season.

I've started watching "Medici" - only one episode so far, but it looks interesting.
"When someone you love dies, you never quite get over it.  You just learn how to go on without them. But always keep them safely tucked in your heart."

maryz

After a friend enlightened me, and I checked google, I'm happy to report that there will be a Season 6 of Longmire, starting sometime next year.  Don't look it up, though, unless you want to read some spoilers.
"When someone you love dies, you never quite get over it.  You just learn how to go on without them. But always keep them safely tucked in your heart."

Marilyne

mary - Thanks for the information on Longmire.  I really do like all of the actors, and the characters that they play. I'm hoping to do something about our color, before I watch any of the new seasons of any show on Netflix or Amazon.

Our regular cable channels and Premium channels are fine, but as soon s we switch to Netflix or Amazon, the color becomes cloudy, mostly brown, and lacking in clarity. My husband isn't bothered by it, so I guess it's up to me to contact Netflix and see what can be done?

Does anyone else have poor color quality on those two channels?

maryz

Not an issue for me, Marilyne - but I watch them through a Roku box, if that makes any difference.
"When someone you love dies, you never quite get over it.  You just learn how to go on without them. But always keep them safely tucked in your heart."

FlaJean

I watch them thru an Apple TV box and see no difference in color.  I had watched the first two Longmire series sometime ago and have just started series 3.  Am also watching the Swedish version of Wallender which is really different (and much better IMO) than the English version.  The captions are nice and large so no problem following along.
