Marilyne,  my station didn't rebroadcast the first episode before the one last night, but the review showed what Mingo had done to "offend".
Didn't know about Emmett.  I can't remember if he's still in....was it California?
I could do without Bay's real mother (can't think of her name) going back to college and turning into a "Cougar"!
The actor who plays Tank looks as if he lost a lot of weight.

I'll probably continue to watch - but may have my crossword puzzle handy, just in case.

Marilyne

Callie - Yes, it was a little annoying that Regina, had to resort to becoming a "cougar"! ::)  I guess they have to keep up with the trends! LOL   Another trend that I'm not fond of is tattoo's.  I wish they hadn't turned Bay into a tattoo artist, but I'm sure that most people would disagree with me.

The boyfriend with Bay, wasn't Tank, it was Travis.  Tank was the big guy, that Bay had her problem with, a couple of seasons ago.  He may be back again, because the writers are looking for a happy ending for everyone, being as this is the last season.

CallieOK

Oh, yes, now I remember Tank.    Well....Tank and Travis start with the same letter.  LOL
Must have been having an Intellectual Interlude  ;)

Marilyne

Callie - So here we are a week later, and another episode of SAB has come to pass!  I recorded it last night, but haven't watched it yet.  I'm in no big rush to see it, but I do plan to watch it on one of these upcoming rainy afternoons. (Four of them in a row, starting tomorrow.)

It doesn't look like anyone has seen anything worthy of mentioning? I've been watching all the usual things on HGTV, TCM, and a couple of the Premium Channels. Netflix and Amazon are still not looking good, colorwise, so I'll have to catch up on all those good programs at some time in the future.  Oh yes, I did watch the Grammy Awards Show on Sunday night.  Not because I'm a fan of today's style of popular music, but because our son, dil and granddaughter were there, along with other members of dil's family.  Her brother is one of the producers of the show, so he gets tickets for them every year.

I am enjoying a new tv series, they got the Idea from The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel...This series is called  " The Good karma Hospital, we have only had two episodes so far but it is looking to be a winner...

Also starting is another new series of The Real Marigold Hotel ( series two, ) but with a different group of famous faces, I will let you know if they meet up to the expectations of the last group...I guess like everything, if these series go down well over here, they will work their way over to you...

I did watch the Christmas one but only four of the first series eight were in it, and I didn't much go on this one, especially the vulgar Miriam Margolyes, with her constant, with every chance she got of doing " fa*t's " words, who seemed to take over the show...

New cast...Bill Oddie, actress Amanda Barrie, snooker champion Dennis Taylor, entertainer Lionel Blair, TV personality Rustie Lee, This Morning’s Doctor Miriam Stoppard, Paul Nicholas from ‘80s sitcom Just Good Friends, and singer Sheila Ferguson...

Marilyne

Jackie - those two new TV shows sound very good!  I saw the Marigold Hotel movies, and enjoyed them . . . especially the first one.  Of course, if they're starring Judi Dench and Maggie Smith, how could it be anything but good?  I'll be looking forward to seeing The Good Karma Hospital, and also The Real Marigold Hotel, #2.  I don't recognize the name Miriam Margolyes, but will be on the lookout for her, to see what she is like.

We watched a couple of movies on TCM this week.  One was the Hitchcock's The Man Who Knew Too Much, 1956, starring James Stewart, Doris Day, and a bunch of good character actors. The assassin, played by Austrian actor, Reggie Nalder, was wonderful. Not much dialogue, but his face says it all! :yikes:

We also saw, The Bad and the Beautiful, 1952, starring Kirk Douglas and Lana Turner.  Not one of my favorite films, as I've never been a big fan of Douglas. However, he's one of the few stars from the "Golden Era" of movies who is still living, at age 100!  Also, Doris Day is still alive, and lives not far from me, in Carmel, CA.  She is in her 90's, and still active in animal rescue activities.

Vanilla-Jackie

I am sure I have posted this before but, two films which Lana Turner had her best and most memorable performances in, were, " Imitation of Life " and " Madame X..." seen both films a few times and could still watch again if they came back onto our tvs...both were sure tearjerkers....

FlaJean

I watched The Man Who Knew Too Much not long ago.  Like that one.  The other night Larry and I started watching The Third Man.  After 20 minutes we both decided ---bad idea.  Awful film in my opinion.

Marilyne

FlaJean - Maybe you didn't give The Third Man enough time?   It's one of my Top Ten favorite movies of all time, and I will always watch it, whenever it plays on TCM.  I loved it from the first time I saw in in 1949, and all the many times since. However, I do understand that we don't all like the same things!  The old saying, "Different strokes for different folks", applies here!  :D

Last night we watched a movie on MGM, called Triumph of the Spirit, from 1989.  It was a Holocaust story, that takes place in Auchwitz, but has a bit of a different twist.  For one thing, it was based on a true story, about a young athlete from Greece, who had won an Olympic medal for boxing, in 1936.  He and his father and brother were all incarcerated in Auchwitz.  His character was played by Willem Dafoe, and also starred James Edward Olmos and Robert Loggia.  I don't know who the female actresses were?  Anyway - not a cheerful movie, as you can well imagine.

Vanilla-Jackie

Three episodes into " The Good Karma Hospital " and I am thoroughly enjoying it on the tv....

MARILYNE...sadly not many true stories are happy, its the reality though of the film that's gripping...not a film I dont recollect ever seeing...

FlaJean

Marilyne, I was watching the movie with my husband or I would have given it more time.  I'll give it another look when he is out working in the yard. 😊  The storyline sounded interesting to me but it was too slow for Larry.

Marilyne

FlaJean - The Third Man, was adapted from the book, by Graham Greene. He also wrote, "The Power and the Glory", "Our Man in Havana", and many more.  I've never read it, which seems odd, considering the movie is, and always will be, on my Top Ten.  I'll have to remedy that ASAP, and put in a request at the library!  The only G Greene books I can remember reading, are Travels With My Aunt, and The End of the Affair.  Both were made into movies.

JeanneP

Just got back from seeing the Movie "Lion"  Fantastic. I cried all the way through.

WAs at 2pm but place full.   Mostly all people with silver hair.  I sit way up in the top so can look down.  Soon will be 2 more good movies out.  "The Zookeepers Wife"
I have the LP book ordered.  And one called.  "British Kingdom" Something like that.

For those of you who like classic black/white movies - tune in tonight to your local PBS channel, and watch Laura.  This 1944, film noir drama has it all . . . mystery, intrigue, clever plot and wonderful performances by Dana Andrews, Gene Tierney, Vincent Price and Clifton Webb. It's playing on most of your PBS channels across the country at either 8:00 or 9:00 O'clock. I'll be watching!

A made-for-TV movie, in 8 or l0 episodes, based on a book "Big Little Lies" by Liane Moriarity, premiered the other night and I DVR'd it. Tried watching last night (it was late) couldn't figure out what I was watching, so started again today.  Still couldn't figure out where we were going with it.  Stars N. Kidman and Reese Witherspoon. Begins with what looks like a Police investigation, but we don't know who got killed, or who might've done it.  Then we segue into the lives of over-privileged Malibu housewives/families. One lady, who is new, doesn't seem to fit in, which is a mystery in itself.  Well, I'm lost, it's not giving us enough of any one group or family to point us in some direction.  Duh.  I'm just lost.  Maybe I'll give it one more episode.

Tomereader,  I had read "Big Little Lies" and didn't understand the first episode of the tv series, either. I thought the book centered on the woman who moved into the community and her back story - not the ditzy one.

However, it seems to me that the first episode of any series always tries to set up story lines for multiple characters.  So I'll give it another shot or two, also.

I have been watching Roots, on and off all day.  It was on Sundance

Marilyne

Gloria de - Have you been watching the new version of "Roots" from last year, or the original series from the 1970's? We watched the new one, and thought it was very good. I'd like to see the old original show, just to compare the two.

Tome and Callie - Thanks for letting us know about "Big Little Lies".  It sounds like it was a bit confusing, but likely they were just trying to cram too much into one hour??  Those series shows tend to do that . . . jump from one character to another, and then back again, while you're still trying to figure out what just happened! The cast is certainly top notch!! I'll start watching it some night next week.  I looked it up online, and saw this review that I think might help to explain things from the first episode?  I'm going to save it and read it over again before I watch the show.
Oh, and I must comment . . . that picture of Nicole Kidman that accompanies the review . . . what a humongous wig she appears to be wearing!!  She couldn't possibly have that much hair, could she?? :-\

Marilyne, Laura is one of my favorites.  I've watched it twice in the last year on Netflix.

Lindancer

Marilyne, I watched the original I think 1977. I did not realize so many famous actors were in it. No I have not seen the new version. It is also on to day.  Yesterday it went well into the late evening, that why I watched it on and off, after the first 3 hours.  Also to day I was just going around the dial, when I found a program about James Island in SC, being changed to Kunta Kinte. All his ancestors were there for the ceremonies

Tonight is the yearly Academy Awards show.  I watch it faithfully, even though I haven't seen any of the movies that are nominated for Oscars this year.  Sometimes the show is entertaining, and other times, not so much . . . but I always hang in there to the bitter end.

I think Gloria de and Callie, are the only others besides me, who tune into this yearly Hollywood love fest?  I only hope that the winners don't go into a political rant, when they get in front of the microphone to accept their awards.  ::)

Marilyne

Gloria - I didn't see your message.  You must have posted it while I was writing mine.  The original "Roots" did have lots of stars in the leading roles, and I don't think the new version did?  The only one I recognized was Forest Whitaker, who played Fiddler.  I'd like to see the original show again.

CallieOK

Marilyne,  :)  at your comment about those of us who watch the Oscars.   I've seen "La La Land" and the one for which Meryl Streep is nominated (although I can never remember the 3 names in the title "Florence ......   .......").  I think that character would have been much more difficult to play than the one from 'La La Land" - even for Meryl Streep.

However, I shall have my mute button handy in case she - or anyone else - goes into a political diatribe with their acceptance speech!

I'm recording the second episode of " Big Little Lies", which comes in the middle of the Oscars show.

I am now watching ,  the Oscars on my Kindle and posting to you on the computer . In other words I am enjoying all these inventions.

Oh, Marilyne, you know that I watch the "hollywood love fest" every year.  The only one of the movies nominated that I have seen was Florence Foster Jenkins with Streep.
(Didn't you just love Kimmel's "dis" on Streep?)  I was confused about why he picked on Matt Damon so much. It wasn't nearly as funny as the shorter bit on Streep.  Some of the dresses were gorgeous, some would look good hanging at Goodwill!  And did we set a record on how many boobs were shining?  My sentiment is:  If boobs are all you have going for you, hang it up baby! One of Kimmels funniest lines was the one about the losers going to the trouble of taping their dress to their boobs (can't quote it exactly! but that's close).
Can anyone tell me why the guys tuxedo trousers are all so awfully baggy at the hem?  I've noticed this before, and am still puzzled.
The Best Picture Mixup was really something...but I didn't see it...as soon as Faye Dunaway finished saying La La Land, I turned off the TV.

I especially loved the montage where they showed all the winners from the past accepting their Oscars, actresses and actors. Just goes to show how quickly we forget...I didn't even remember last years Best Actress winner. Last years Best Actor was my sweetie from "Bridge of Spies" (also from "Wolf Hall") with the dreamy eyes. Loved his little porkpie hat!

Tomereader1

And the speeches:  most were without "vitriol" yet some had a political bent. The most elegant and touching was
Viola Davis' accepting her Supporting Actress award.  I was almost crying with her.

And last, but not least, I thought/felt that Kimmel was particularly Boring.  He had a couple bright spots, (read "funny") but all in all, his hosting just seemed to "drag".  Now that's just MHO, and I'm sure some of you loved him!

CallieOK

Impressions of The Oscars Show:  Kimmel was less outspoken than I expected him to be, Viola Davis' speech was very classy,  Meryl Streep's behavior in general was ridiculous and Emma Stone did not deserve to win Best Actress.

I realize some kind of activity is needed while sets are being changed, etc. The reactions of the audience when the treat bags tumbled down were fun to see but the "stunt" with the tour bus people was totally unnecessary.

Robin Roberts did well as  a Red Carpet interviewer.

Tome - I love your review of the Oscars!  Sorry I didn't mention you, as one of the very few members here who watch the awards.  Of course I remember that you're one of the few movie lovers who post in this forum!.  In fact I'm impressed that both you and Callie are the only two who still attend movies in an actual theater!   I was in my "pre-Oscar grumbling mood", over the fact that so few seniors are interested in the awards, or in any movies - old or new.  Hard for me to relate, because I look forward to and enjoy the awards, every year.

The fiasco at the end of the show, was total chaos!  When Beatty and Dunaway came out to announce the winner, I thought he, (Warren), looked totally confused, or "out to lunch", as the saying goes.  So when it all came down, I figured it was somehow his fault for handing Faye the wrong card. But, apparently it was a mixup with the envelopes??  We'll probably never know, but heads are going to fly.  I really felt sorry for the "Moonlight" people.  By the time they excepted the award, all the energy and excitement had gone out of the show, and they didn't get the attention that they deserved.

The best part of the show for me, was the arrival, and the stunned reaction of the tour bus group!  At first I thought . . . Oh no, this is a big mistake!  but I was wrong . . . they were perfect, not only funny, but they added some reality or contrast, to  all the glitz and glamour.  An incredible raggedy bunch of movie star worhippers, as I have ever seen.  The couple from Chicago looked to be right out of Central Casting.

As for the dresses!  Has there ever been so much sparkle and glitter at the Oscars?  Who knew there were that many metallic fabrics?  Gold, silver, sparkling beads and sequins were everywhere.  That must be the fashion trend of the year.  some were lovely and understated, but others were overdone and (as always) showing way too much skin!

I could go on and on, naming individual favorites, but I've already written a book!  I hope we hear from Callie and Gloria, as well as anyone else out there who watched the show?
