Oldiesmann: Finally got the AmazonBot situation under control. I basically changed some server settings to tell AmazonBot that it's not allowed to access anything on the site. That should fix the speed issues we've been experiencing lately

Guess everyone is bingeing on basketball this week.  I used to love to watch the Women's Playoffs, but haven't gotten into it this year.  I would always root for Tennessee, or one of the Texas teams, but failing that, I was a Connecticut fan!

Tomereader, I'm waiting AGAIN! for someone to beat UConn, but unfortunately I don't think that will happen.  He's able to get the best recruits in the nation and although there are some other good teams, like my Alma Mater, the U. of South Carolina, I'm pretty sure UConn will prevail.  He has his picks of the best of the best every year.  Who wouldn't want to play for the perpetual #1 team?!  NOT FAIR!

SCFSue

P.S. the announcers for the women's finals are mostly UConn grads--sounds like nepotism to me!

Marilyne

We watched the PBS Saturday Night Movie last night, which was the original version of The Manchurian Candidate, starring Angela Lansbury, Frank Sinatra, Lawrence Harvey and Janet Leigh.  What a great movie . . . a real thought provoking thriller!  I think the PBS movie plays on most channels across the country, so I'm hoping that some of you also watched it?

JeanneP

I may try finding the Manchurian at my library. Been years since I saw it and so forgotten what it was about. good actors in it. Has to be good

This is just a reminder: The presentation "To Walk Invisible about the Bronte Sisters " is tonight on PBS eastern time at 9 p.m.

Tomereader1

Remember that they re-made "Manchurian Candidate" a couple of years ago with Denzel Washington.  In my opinion, the original was the better of the two!  (Which is mostly the case with re-makes!)

Marilyne

Tome - I rarely ever watch a remake of any of the old movies.  They're never even close to being as good as the original, and they're almost always box office bombs.

The remake of Manchurian starring Meryl Streep as the mother, was a flop.  As great of an actress as Streep is, I'm sure she didn't live up to the performance by Angela Lansbury!  Another remake that I refused to see, was True Grit. I like Jeff Bridges, but the role of Rooster Cogburn, belongs to John Wayne!

Chia

I just watched the story about the Bronte Sisters on PBS tonight and I can only say,  with my very limited hearing,  the expressions on those actors' faces,  was  that more easier to figure out what was going on.. I thought the play was wonderful and all the actors were very professional..For some reason, I had no difficulty in understanding the actor who played the role of the Father..The actor playing the part of the Brother was also very good in a most difficult part (I thought)...The scenery was fantastic and done only as English producers do so well,,I am glad that I stuck with it for the 2 hours...

Wondering if anyone watches the Hallmark Series "When Calls the Heart" ?

It is not one of my favorite series of Hallmark movies.  I had a hard time getting into the story when it first started.  However, last night I only caught a little bit near the end.   Wondering why Jack had to leave?   But, he did propose to the girl (can't remember her name) . So, I guess the story might be getting better.

My favorite was the series made from the Debbie Macomber's books.  None have been that good since.

JeanneP

I just had to quit on The Bronte. Knew I wouldn't enjoy it for 2 hours or future.
Being from the area the scenery was good. Remember the dark dreary weather.  Not quite the same anymore. The house still the same.

Chia - My hearing is also very poor.  Some shows on TV I can hear better than others, but I always use Closed Captioning, for any play, movie, or live performance.  The words showing at the bottom of the screen, somehow helps me to actually hear the spoken dialogue. My husband has the same problem.  We automatically turn on CC for all of the above.

Joye - I haven't watched the Hallmark series,  When calls the Heart, but my daughter and gr-daughter have been following it.  I like Debbie Macomber's books, so I'd like to see that series.  I'll have to look On Demand, and see if it's still listed?

JeanneP - Why did you not care for the, The Bronte Sisters? What didn't you like about it?  I didn't see it last night, but I recorded it, so hope to watch it today.

CallieOK

Joy,  I only watched a few episodes of "When Calls The Heart" - for several reasons.  One being that it conflicts with a couple of other shows I like to watch on Sunday nights.  I could record it but the other reason is that the characters, particularly the women. look much too modern for the time in which the story is set.  Hard to explain why other than their hair dos and something about the way they behave.
I did enjoy the Debbie MaComber series - except for Andie McDowell's portrayal of the judge.  Much too "sweet" for the way I read the character in the books.  Also got annoyed at the way she tossed her hair in every episode of one season - and her insipid giggle in another season.
Maybe I'm just too picky!!!

I recorded the Bronte sisters show last night because there were conflicts with other shows being thrown off schedule by severe weather reports.
No bad weather here but large hail and a couple of small tornadoes happened within the viewing area of the local stations.

Marilyne,  I also use CC but my tv isn't set up to get it on Netflix.  Even my techie dil can't get it to work.  So I watch Netflix on my Tablet, where I can get the CC.

Did anyone watch the first episode of DWTS last week?   Charo is going to be way past annoying but Mr. T. is much better behaved than I expected.

phyllis

The Bronte's was just OK, IMO.  I wondered why soooo much of the story was about Branwell since he was the least productive, or well-known, of the 4.  I suppose because of his alcoholism he was the most interesting as far as telling the story was concerned.  The 3 sisters led pretty dull lives, it seems, but then women in that time weren't encouraged to do anything other than to take care of the house and the men in the family.  Quite a lot has changed since we were there, except for the dreary weather.  That apparently hasn't changed.  ;)

I rely totally on CC and if it isn't available then I have to turn away because I can't understand enough of the dialogue to even follow the plot line.

Do any of you remember the long ago story of the Bronte's in black and white?  I think Laurence Olivier played the part of the moody brother.  Very good presentation in black and white--and the moors were gorgeous!

SCFSue

Marilyne

Yes, I remember the original PBS show about the Bronte's . . . must have been at least 40 or more years ago?  I tried looking it up online, but didn't find anything.  I haven't watched episode #1 of the new series as yet.  I have so many things recorded, and trying to go through them one by one.

Callie - did you give up on Switched At Birth?  I'm still recording and watching, but only because this is the last season, and I want to see how everything ends up.  So far, the writers are sticking with heavy duty PC story lines, and not much about wrapping up loose ends.  Yesterday afternoon I watched the "return" of Angelo, and the baptism story of Toby and Lily's baby.  Every week it's another story on acceptance, tolerance, forgiveness, etc. ::)

CallieOK

Marilyne,  yes, I'm sticking with Switched at Birth -  for the same reason you are.   I was ready to give it up after the first two episodes until I learned that the series is ending.

Unless Charo is kicked off DWTS next week,  I may not finish watching it.  She is disgusting and totally out of control.

Marilyne

Callie - I decided at the end of last season, that I was through with DWTS!  That fake protest against Ryan Lochte, was the last straw for me. It was so obvious and ridiculous.  They don't need to stage phony stunts like that, to keep viewers, and they lost me instead.  Anyway, I heard from my daughter that Charo is acting "totally weird", so I will watch it on demand, just to see what she's doing?

Tomereader1

When I saw that Charro was going to be on the show, I decided right then I was not going to watch it.  Same with Mr. T.   They get so many "no-names" anymore that it is not even fun.

CallieOK

After Charo's time on last night's show,  the guard who had dealt with the Lochte incident was introduced as one who would "protect us from Charo".   I didn't see if he had to "help" her off the ballroom floor.
IMO,  she should be forbidden to compete again.
Mr. T. can't dance worth a lick but his conversations and attitude are surprisingly sensible.

SCFSue

About the Brontes:  I suggested that Laurence Oliver  might have played the Bronte Brother--however, I have a much worn Movie and Video guide from 1999.  He did not play in the "Brontes" as I remembered, but starred in Wuthering Heights in 1939 as the "tortured Heathcliff" forever in love with the ethereal Cathy who was played by Merle Oberon.  I've seen that several times on late night TBS.  An excellent movie!

I just thought that the Bronte's on Sunday night was boring.  I do remember the old Black and white movie of about 40 years back. Think I may have the tape.
I must have liked it as I held on.  Still love Black and white movies.

We read so much on them in School in the UK.  I now go back once in awhile and read the books we had to read.  Lots can't be found now.  Can get them from the University Library at any time.
JeanneP

JeanneP

O.K Jane.  Stop sending your Iowa weather over to us. Say storms are heading this way from you.  Will cool us now a lot.
I just watched a old Wuthering Hights black and white the other day.  How different the acting is today. Wonder what it would be like if they made a new one in Tech. colour now using the new modern.  Just would not be able to get the dark dreary feeling shown on the old one.

I am watching DWTS Callie, but Charo has to go, she gave me a headach Monday. Grabbing the mike, was uncalled for, and her screaming. She did  was not to bad in the dance.  Mr. T surprised me, as he was so soft spoken.  bad dancer.

Marilyn, I use cc, but also TV ears. I love them, you can even turn the TV off, and still her the station. I have then with all my TV sets. Much better then earphones.

Gloria de & Callie - I agree that Charo, won't last much longer on DWTS.  I watched it yesterday On Demand, and she was super annoying. She's always been extremely hyper and unpredictable, but has gotten worse in her old age.

Speaking of her age, she says she is only 66 years old, (born in 1951), but according to her Spanish birth certificate, she was actually born in 1941, making her 76 years old.

CallieOK

At least, Charo was one of the two in jeopardy - and I'd have to agree that the guy from SNL was the worst dancer.  I saw the x-ray of his spine in his introductory remarks and am surprised he agreed to compete at all, having had his neck broken like he did.

Don't know why - but I always thought that Mr. T the person was much different from Mr. T. the personality.

Marilyne,  have you watched last night's episode of Switched At Birth yet?   I thought the story lines were trite.  If that's the best the writers can come up with, it's no wonder that - as the ad said,  'there's one more episode until the series finale".

Is anyone watching "Designated Survivor?  It's on ABC tonight at 9:00 CDT.

Tomereader1

You betcha, Callie!  Love that Designated Survivor!  I even turned my daughter on to it, and she binged all the episodes last week...could hardly wait till this week's epi.
She catches these on HULU the day after the program airs. That's how she managed to "binge watch"!

CallieOK

   I've already set my DVR - in case I forget to watch the time.

Marilyne

Callie - I haven't seen Tuesday night's "Switched At Birth" yet.  I'll watch it Friday afternoon.  This final season is a disappointment, but because I've followed the show for years, I'll hang in there for the last few episodes.  As you said, it's been trite and predictable, so far this season. Not at all realistic, like it once was.

Lindancer

I see Charo is threatening to quite, if she does not get a better score. Is she kidding! As I said yesterday, with her screaming, she gave me a headache.

finely. It was beautiful here yesterday and not to bad today. Maybe get a walk in. The weather sure makes a difference to my personality. I ran all over town yesterday. Such energy.  Came home and took a nap at 4:30. Big mistake. Awake most the night. Going to not even sit down today.
Some good TV on Public TV tonight.  Covers the whole 3 hours.
