Oldiesmann: Finally got the AmazonBot situation under control. I basically changed some server settings to tell AmazonBot that it's not allowed to access anything on the site. That should fix the speed issues we've been experiencing lately

Jane, I know you used to do a Computer Q&A, and I would like to ask a question of you, if that's okay?  What brand of computer (I prefer desktops) might you recommend as far as length of life and minimum of problems?

My HP computer is about 11 yrs old, and still running Win7.  I didn't have enough drive space to upgrade to Win 10 on this, and was not able (or willing) to invest in a new computer at that time.  Plus, my daughter has Win 10 on her computer, and I don't much like it when I am visiting her.

Just your general thoughts, and don't be afraid to recommend a brand other than HP (just not a MAC).  Hope this doesn't impose on your time.

P.S.  I'm always glad to see you posting and knowing how you are doing healthwise.

Hi, Tomereader,

I hope others who've had different brands will also join in here.

The truth of the matter is that I've had about every brand over the years.

I gave up on a desktop years ago and just use a laptop, now, for convenience when traveling (which I don't do so much of anymore.  I had Gateways, Dells, HP, and a local build over the years..  The same with laptops...all sorts of brands.
They all seemed to last me about 18 months before they went Koo koo.

This laptop (Lenovo) has been the longest lasting so far.  Lenovo used to be IBM, I think.
This laptop is now 5 years old..

Buddies....what would you recommend for a desktop for tomereader?

jane

maryz

I mostly use a laptop - it's an HP Pavilion. I've had it about 5-6 years.  I haven't had a desk top since 2015. Just use the laptop and a tablet for the word games I play.

Tomereader1

Thanks Jane & MaryZ for the feedback.  I guess I have been luckier than most, with the current desktop working on its 11th year, without going koo-koo. I did have to have the fan replaced once.  I just never cottoned to laptops, in the stores when shopping, I couldnt get the hang of the touchpad and it frustrated me so much.  My daughter had an HP laptop long ago, which lasted her quite awhile, but it was so heavy.  I know they are lighter now.

I'm still here and open to any other suggestions, recomendations and am certainly grateful for all responses.

Hope everyone is having a great day and that the weather in your respective areas is as you would like it.  It's cloudy here, with a teeny chance of rain tomorrow.  Temps didn't make it into 100's today so I am thankful for that.  My lawn is dead from all the 100+ days with no rain, and if the cracks in the ground don't swallow me and my house, I'll talk to you all later!

On every laptop, I've gone to settings to turn off the touchpad. That way, I can use a mouse which is easier.

maryz

I'm with Patricia - I turn off the touchpad, and use a wireless mouse.

jane

Me, three....I turn off the touchpad and use a wireless mouse.

I also use an external harddrive to back everything up to.  It plugs into my C opening.[/c]

patricia19

I currently have three 4 Terabyte external hard drives. I have many old photos and PSP graphics and images, so I need to be able to save, download, and, most importantly, detach from the computer so it's safe. One has all of my "paperwork", one has all of my current work, and the last is a "mirror" of my computer, programs, info, quirks, etc.

Tomereader1

I'd never be able to keep track of all that!!

jane

It's a cool Wednesday here and it feels good.  I went down the basement to find some of my fall decorations, but I don't see most of them.

Take care and stay healthy,

jane

Where is everyone?  I am currently being cared for by my daughter Becky, who came from Missouri for that purpose, Bless her soul!  Son Chip went to Seattle to visit his sweetheart and got very, very dangerously ill and was hospitalized and had serious surgery and is recuperating now back at Abigail's place until the hospital clears him to come home.  Daughter Debi was to come to take over my care from Becky, but she is in bed with a real old fashioned chest cold:  she sounds like Tallulah Bankhead, sexy as all get out.  We are hearing we are to experience a thrashing/crashing storm somewhere along our coastline.  We hope it will not stop off with us.
They are saying it may rustle up a cyclone!  I feel I could do without that.

maryz

MaryPage, sorry to hear about Chip, but glad he's on the mend. Hope he's home soon. Aren't our kids wonderful!!

It has been quiet in here. Nothing exciting (fortunately) where I am.  This is a good thing. I'm enjoying the fact that my grandkids keep texting me photos of their new babies. So I get to watch them grow - even though I don't get to see them often in person.

Fall is actually starting to happen - this is a good thing.  Hope you don't get too much storm, MP.

Apparently we were on the edge of the Big Storm.  We just had rain with winds, but not harmful ones. TGFSF.

Yes, Mary, our children are our Joy when we get up here.

Chip does not feel up to par yet, of course, so he, who has never been a great communicator, leaves it to his sweetheart to inform us from time to time of his progress.  Which she does, Thank God!
And she tells us he is, as of today, making a good progress.

Hi everyone..looks like I haven't  posted lately...I'm so ready for this hot weather to be gone...we usually get our first norther around Halloween...my 3 sons and daughter was here for a few days.  We had fun catching up..but I am tired...so early to bed for me tonight..Hope y'all are well and staying safe

Cottoncandy

Good afternoon Buddies...hope all are well....just busy.....we got rain today...hooray...now if it will just cool off...Hi to all looking in....

MaryPage

We here in Annapolis, Maryland have had a deluge of water this past week, but no huge storms.  Downtown, City Dock and it's many stores have been flooded, but only with a few feet of liquid.  They think we may get storms this next week; we shall see. Chip may be allowed to come home Thursday, and Becky hopes to leave for her home that same day.
Everything on hold until we hear what Chip's doctors have to say. I am on pins & needles.  Taking care of me has become pretty much a fulltime job now, and I regret that, but life is still precious.

maryz

Flooding is bad stuff, MaryPage. Glad you're staying dry.  And glad that your Chip is continuing to improve and will soon be home.

Donna, we're still in our late summer temps, it seems. Nashville hit a high of 91! yesterday.
I'm SE of there, about halfway between Nashville & Chattanooga), and was a bit cooler. Predicted for mid80s for the next week.  Definitely ready for fall!

I wonder where our jane is.

Good to hear from MaryPage, Darlene, Mary...I've been "under the weather" with a head cold or allergies.  No energy and all of that.

I hope MP's Chip is improving....surgery away from home is not good stuff!

Darlene...good to see your kids, but that much company wears me out, too.

Maryz...hope you miss all the bad weather that seems to be everywhere.

Off for a shower before my cleaning ladycomes.

Stay healthy!

Tuesday greetings...

And we're in "summer" Oct...to be in very high 80s today but then to find fall and be in 50s by Friday.  What a roller coaster!

Nothing new or exciting here...getting that anticipatory dread about Friday and my first "Rinse" of BCG for the cancer of my bladder.  Niece Patricia is coming down Thursday and will take me to the Cancer Center in CR on Friday morning for this immunotherapy treatment.

Hope you are all well and safe.

jane

Glad to hear from you, jane. Hang in there!

All going well here.  We've been having temps in the high 80s, but fall is due to show up by this weekend - with highs just in the 60s.

Just finished morning with Annual Wellness Check, bloodwork draws, etc., blood pressure was great 130/70; then off to the lower floor for Mammogram + Sonogram on a suspicious fatty growth.  All good, growth was nothing, and Mammo showed nothing.Complete yearly physical is next Thursday.  Will see how that turns out. Needless to say, I'm tired. Got up early, fasting, so nothing to eat, a bottle of water so I'd be adequately hydrated for the blood draws.  The PA doing this wellness check was 1 hour behind schedule, and I'm about to faint from hunger. I stepped out into the hallway, and flagged her down.  Told her appointment was scheduled for 10:00 AM, and it was 11:00 then.  After the labwork, I snuck off to my parked car, where I had brought 2 of those little cinnamon pecan swirls, and ate those with the rest of my bottle of water.  Waited there for an hour listening to radio, and when I got to the Mammo suite, they were running 1/2 hour+ behind.  So I finally out of the medical center shortly after 2:00.  Stopped and got me a Whopper Junior with Bacon, came home & scarfed that down.  I now proclaim it to be "Nap Time".  Hoping all your appointments are on time!

diglady

Where is everyone? I hope all are ok.  I am interested to hear from alpiner and to hear if she likes the portable Inogen she bought. And Jane how are you doing?

alpiner1

diglady  my only problem with the Inogen One is the battery only lasts 4 hours .   My husband & I are members of the Model T Ford Club of America we go on tours & I will need to take along a spare battery for these trips since the Model T's don't have an outlet for me to plug into .

maryz

Everybody seems to have gone missing.  I've been having excruciating pains in my back, and was in the hospital Monday night. They didn't do anything to help - were more concerned with some low lab values than my admitting problem. I saw my FP Thursday. He gave a cortisone dose pack and some muscle relaxants, and offered to send me to a "specialist" (type unknown). Margaret called the office yesterday to get them to do that, but they were closed on Friday afternoon. (Never have a problem over the weekend!) We're leaning toward the possibility of a spinal compression fracture, but we'll see. Will keep you posted.

Hello Buddies...today is the eclipse viewing..I have the proper glasses..if I decide to look..MaryZ. Sorry to hear about your pain..do hope you get it resolved...hope Jane is OK and will post soon...hugs to all looking in

Tomereader1

CottonCandy, I bet you had a great view of the eclipse!  The sun here is really bright, and it is cold!  My front porch thermometer is registering in the 50's.
I couldn't find my eclipse glasses from the last time we had one.  I know I have two or three pair, just couldn't find even one of them.  They'll show up one day, and maybe I can think of a place to put them, so when we have the next eclipse, next April, I can find them.  Mark you calendars, April 2024, and I forgot the exact date.
