Oldiesmann: Finally got the AmazonBot situation under control. I basically changed some server settings to tell AmazonBot that it's not allowed to access anything on the site. That should fix the speed issues we've been experiencing lately

Sue, I pray that your sister and family are all safe.  Sure lots of flooding. I'm wondering how much damage was done to SCHH. Glad we've moved to safer area.  It's raining lightly today. A light breeze.  According to the TV, it should all clear off this afternoon and be beautiful for the next few days at least.

Ginny, so glad you saw the dentist. I hope the extractions will take care of the pain.  Did he give you any antibiotics to prevent infection? Feel better soon.

Going to do some laundry this afternoon and then probably read.  Hope everyone is safe and dry. Sharon

SCFSue

Hi Sharon.  I've still not heard from Anne and Richard.  I've tried to call Anne's son and family who also live near them.  No phones seem to be available in that area.  I can't remember Anne's youngest daughter's new married name in West Virginia.  I did find a nice web page with her eldest daughter's resume (she was an executive with Carbide or Monsanto in St. Louis until she retired).  However, no personal information was available.

I'm thinking (and hoping) that the retirement community Anne and Richard live in bused the residents out when the hurricane was predicted.  It's a real worry.

Hi everyone, I have skipped a few days posting but that doesn't mean I wasn't here reading. I've just been very busy with Therapy Dog visits  and other things. After church tomorrow we are doing the Alzheimer's  walk at one of the care facilities. It is a group participation thing so there were be other therapy dogs and we are to weatr our vest and the dog are to wear theirs.

A couple of weeks ago I got my wedding ring caught so it is bent. I took my ring to the  jewelers who replaced my diamond for me,  He hans't been well but I left my ring anyway he will get to it when he can.

Wednesday night driving back from Bandon in the dark, apparently  the person coming toward me with his bright lights  glaring in my face,  got too close to me, (I couldn't see maybe i got too close to him) or maybe both of us did  anyway we  hurt mirrors. He didn't stop, I pulled to the road side but he kept going. So I did too. I have to get that fixed as it is the drivers mirror and I use that a lot.

jane

Marilyn...glad the sideswiping wasn't worse.

Beautiful day here.  We did some outside stuff... pulling up garden waste and I gathered some some walnuts.  How I hate those trees.....so messy.

Watching football and saw Sue's team won....and I'm looking forward to the Alabama-Arkansas game tonight.

Jane

maryz

Marilyn, what a scary thing!  I'm glad it wasn't worse.  We spent a couple of nights in Bandon, OR, many years ago - a really nice town.

Paul has checked in and his place in Charleston is okay.  He didn't say anything about damage in the city.

MaryPage

Mary, I have a bone to pick with you.  This falls in the You Are Guilty category.
Thanks to you, I am losing hours and hours of Time I could be using to greater profit.  Time I could be putting towards getting my chores done, reading away at my shelves and shelves and piles and piles of books.  Time I could be on the phone checking up on people I should keep in touch with.  Scheesch!
I never knew, I never Knew that online versions of Mexican Train existed until you decided I was old enough to be told!
Woe is me, I have Two different versions going, and I play it morning, noon and night.
It's all Your Fault!  See what a Bad Influence you are?
Shame!

jane

Me, too, MaryPage, and I hooked my sister on it while we were in Ohio.  BAD MAryz!!   :2funny: :2funny: :2funny:

Beautiful here, low 60s, and we need to water!  You'd think we'd had enough, but the ground is dry again.

Jane

so_P_bubble

What is Mexican Train???

MaryPage

Bubble, you have no need to know.  Just don't GO there!

maryz

MaryPage and jane - I have to plead guilty.  I finally have gone on to other games, but it almost required an intervention.  And, MP, all that stuff isn't going anywhere - it'll wait patiently for your return.  LOL

Bubble, Mexican Train is a game with dominoes.  I learned about it from Sharon (so 'fess up, Sharon!) and have played it "live" with our group at the beach.  I found it online, and this is the site I use now.

More of our lovely fall weather today.  I've got a couple of busy weeks coming up - getting ready to be "out of the loop" for a while.  I have my pre-admission appointment at the hospital in the morning - that should take a while.

Happy Sunday, Buddies!

We play it live, too, in Texas!  Fun when it's cold and or rainy at the beach.

I use an app on my IPAd and paid  1.99 for the "pro" version.   :D

so_P_bubble

Oh That is just playing dominoes!  We used to do that long ago, also with the dominoes that go up to 12!

MaryPage

I used to play with a bunch of gals here, in fact, it was one of those who introduced me to the game.  The thing I love about playing with four or five other people is how much we all laugh.  But I find myself constantly, whether it is a real life opponent or the computer who thwarts my plans for winning, muttering "Oh 4-letter word!" to myself.  So now I am convinced that THAT is the real name of the game!

Oh, and all of my buddies here either died or moved into care, and it appears that few to none of my children's generation play games!  So I am forced to play the blankety blank blank computer nowadays!

Our dark and rainy day has turned into dryed up roadways and Sunshine!  Woo hoo!

maryz

Bubble, this game is played with 12s.

I am finally here today, We went to church, came home had lunch and i have been working in my PSP to get an image and stationery done for one of the groups I am in. I own 2 stationery groups and a psp tutorial group. So I do keep busy on the computer when I am not out visiting the medical facilities.

MaryZ I am so glad that the  sideswipe wasn't any worse than the mirror we could have had a much more  terrible wreck,. I am taking my car to the Body shop tomorrow to get the estimate and have them order the mirror. I don't know what all it entails to  put on another mirror, but I do know there are some electronic  involved. I doubt it will be inexpensive. I don't have the kind of insurance that covers that.

maryz

Oh, dear, Marilyn - I guess everything in cars is electronic nowadays - and thus expensive.  So sorry.

Sue, my granddaughter and spouse are on their long-delayed honeymoon (yesterday was their 5th anniversary) and traveling in Croatia and surrounding countries for three weeks.  They've already gotten two e-mails, and have been to the lakes that you mentioned a long time ago.  They're on their own, starting out with an itinerary, but willing to deviate from it at any time.  Such fun for them!

I'm late today, too.  I did SS and Church, but skipped Burger King.  I made my favorite left-over chicken casserole for lunch.  After resting a bit I went outside and planted another flat of pansies.  Now only 2 more to go.  I wanted to do another one, but my thighs are pretty stressed out from the kneeling and squatting I  need to do to plant this flower bed.  I'm going to my annual dermatology check up tomorrow morning.  Tim is coming over to take me, so I hope I get in quickly and out again quickly.

Marilyn, I'm sorry about your mishap and hope that your Body Shop can replace the mirror reasonably.

I've never played Mexican Train dominoes but when we went to the beach for Thanksgiving when Alex and Nick were still toddlers, all the other adults did while I played kiddie games and read stories to the boys.  All the players loved it and the boys were happy about Granny Sue giving them lots of attention.

I hope you've had a nice day, Buddies.  I'll talk to you tomorrow.
Sue

P.S. Mary, I'm glad your granddaughter and spouse are enjoying Croatia and the surrounding countries.  That is a great place to visit.

I never made it to Croatia, but have wanted to ever since I read Black Lamb and Grey Falcon over 50 years ago.  The great Dame Rebecca West wrote it, and while I have since read many, many books about that area of the world, I have never read a better one.  It is still in print after all these years, in case you've never read it.  Fascinating how relationships change so swiftly between peoples.  Yes, I meant that in the plural: peoples, as in countries and cultures.  We were on the same side as the Serbs, whom we despise now, during World War II, while the Croats backed the Germans.  The Serbs are mostly Eastern Orthodox, while the Croats are mostly Roman Catholic.  That is why there is a sort of familial relationship between the Serbs and the Russians.  Besides, they are all Slavs.  Because of the things that book taught me, I cried when the bridge at Mostar was destroyed.
My heart was really set on visiting Split and Diocletian's Palace.  Is it Allison who has gone, Mary?  Maybe I can get her to join me for coffee when she returns, so as to hear all about it through her eyes.

maryz

Yes, MaryPage, it is Alison & Joe who are on the trip.  John and I stopped at Split several years ago on our last overseas trip.  It was a Road Scholar small ship cruise in the Mediterranean from Venice to Cannes.  I think our stop in Split was the most unexpected and maybe our favorite stop of the trip.  We love Diocletian's Palace - with all the 21st century stuff (a bank, shops, residences) nestled and built inside of the Roman palace, which was built of "old" columns and stuff scavenged from Greek temples.  Fabulous!

I am drooling with envy.

Hi Gals, had to laugh at the Mexican Train addiction!  And I confess, I used to talk about it all the time when we lived in  HH.  We had a regular Sat. night date with our friends from OH who spent 6 mos ea. place.  I have taught all the kids and grandkids to play it, so it's a regular at our family events.  We haven't found friends here who like it all that well though, so haven't played it much. I'll have to ck out the online site.  I play the Solitaire daily challenges regularly online.

I went to church & SS yesterday, had lunch and was reading the paper when Ms Frances called and wanted me to come play bridge for the afternoon! Not in my plans, but went and had a nice time. One of her friends lives in HHSC and had evacuated up here with 3 friends to stay at another friend's home.  They had been there 6 days and were hoping to be allowed to go home today.  All the roads were closed to Beaufort County and Sun City wasn't allowing anyone in.

My tire pressure light is on, so I guess I need to take it to the tire place to be checked and perhaps have the tires rotated.  tomorrow, I have an appt with the hearing aid place for a test and recheck of the aids.

John is learning to do laundry now, so yesterday we had a role reversal--he stayed home and did laundry while I went and played bridge!   :D   Works for me!

I've never been to Croatia but it sounds fascinating.

It's chilly here today. I actually put the HVAC on automatic and it went to heat.  Amazing.  Beautiful day out though.  We got about 5" of rain from Matthew!  Much needed but I didn't think we were getting that much till I went out to empty my rain guage yesterday.

Hi to all. Have a lovely Fall day.  Sharon

jane

Afternoon, Dear Friends!

Sharon...GOOD for you...John can learn to do things like that to help you out.

It's a beautiful fall day here....and then the bottom is to drop out....probably our first frost of the season and much cooler....40s and 50s.   We watered again this morning, and the plants are looking much better.

I need to get to WalMart for my scripts and a few groceries.  This morning I pulled some weeds for a bit and that's the extent of my gardening at this stage of the game.

Nothing else new or exciting here...

jane

Hi Buddies!  I had my preadmission visit this morning - and it took the whole morning.  Blood work and EKG, then a visit with the nurse for history-taking and instructions.  Fortunately there's so much information prior to a joint replacement that everything is written down, too.  Now I get to study and exercise and remember to do all this stuff.

I had enough time to grab some lunch before bridge.  And then even got some pretty good cards during the afternoon.  And now I'm home and have to study my hospital stuff.  LOL

MaryPage

Mary, I will be thinking of you, and also of my beloved son in law, Greg, who goes in for big time heart surgery on Wednesday, October 12th.

JeanneP

Decided I had to turn ti Furnace on today. Got down to 57dg. in the house. Was nice out later.  My kind of fall weather. Was thinking of cutting down the large Hosta's and cleaning up that area but saw my man who does my grass and passed the job on to him. Finely got all the insulation under the house replace. All closed up. Now if I can get the Sewer people to come and get the tree roots cleaned out of the sewer line. (Needs doing every year). The furnace people out to clean it
On Nov. 4 suppose to be some volunteers from one of the Univ. Frat. houses to come and clean up my whole yard and the shed. then I am set for winter. O.K from man to clear snow from driveway if we get snow.  Not really needed it last 2 years.  Got to be prepared in the Midwest.
JeanneP

JeanneP

Sharon.  forgot to say. Good luck training the husband.  Mine never could boil water.
Very good on Maintenance though. Also yard work. Those were the main things. Never did baby stuff. Diapers and bathing and such. Al though I had only 2 girls so did not expect that.
I really don't think that men of my generation ever taught about cooking, laundry etc. But now my Daughters husband and Granddaughter are good.
JeanneP

SCFSue

I finally located Anne at home yesterday.  They did leave their home in the retirement community.  Anne had noticed a motel about 10 miles from their home on an elevated hill and made a reservation.  Most of their neighbors were bussed out--she didn't say where they ended up.  Their motel was high enough not to be a problem and best of all, no flooding at their home.

Jeanne, my husband never got the hang of cooking but he did all the laundry after he retired while I was still teaching.  He fixed my breakfast (cereal, coffee, fruit, and milk) so that I could get my shower and get to school by 7:00 on bus duty days and before 7:30 when I didn't have duty.  I really appreciated that!

MaryPage, I'll send up a prayer for your Son-in-law Greg.  I hope all goes well.  Isn't he the one you kept books for across the big bridge?  I know your family is so supportive of all the in-laws and that is a plus for Greg.

Mary, will one of your girls come down to stay with you after you get home?  I do hope all goes well with the surgery and the rehab, too.  Big Hugs and Good Thoughts coming your way.  Let us know how it goes as soon as you can.  We're all pulling for you.  I envy Allison and Joe their trip to Croatia--that was one of my favorite trips.

Jane, it sounds like you're finally getting a real fall.  I did some weed pulling today, too.  I finally planted the last 2 flats of pansies  this afternoon.  I still have a flat of violas to plant, but I needed to prepare tomorrow morning's Circle lesson this afternoon.  The person who was to present it is ill.

Gosh, Sharon, I didn't realize John is a slow learner!  Just kidding--Bob was good at laundry and he took all 3 sons to the laundry room for a lesson when they were getting ready to leave for college.  And I'm proud to say that all 3 of them still do at least their own laundry and maybe more of the household laundry.

We're have mornings that are a bit cooler, but up in the mid 80s by afternoon.  I sure wish we'd get some rain.  I think it only rained once while I was at the Assisted Living in June and not at all here at my house.  I'm afraid my azaleas are not going to make it.  I'm just not up to dragging the hoses and sprinklers out there where they are.

Sleep well, Buddies.
Sue

maryz

Sue, glad to hear that Anne and spouse got out and were fine.  It sounds like the folks in NC are having the same problems that Baton Rouge had.  Joy hasn't checked in lately, but I'm sure her family is still working on rebuilding.  The rising rivers in NC are now getting closer to some to some of the Duke Power ash ponds, and folks are hoping that they won't breach and flow into the rivers.  Mother Nature is not nice sometimes.

MaryPage, we'll all be plugging for Greg, too.  Let us know how he does.

Jeanne, my a/c is still cutting in from time to time during the afternoons.  Our lows have been in the low 60s - not nearly cool enough to turn on the heat.

Youngest daughter Jean will be coming down the day before my surgery and is planning to stay for three weeks. She'll be able to check in here and let y'all know how things went. The other girls are "on call" for later, if need be.  I'm going to talk with the nurse here and check again about PT services after I get out of rehab.  I should be okay here in my apartment after that, with the support that is in this building.
