Grrr! Got out to clean off the ice on the car and discovered one of my tires is going flat, or at least way lower than it should be. Had to cancel an early appointment for this morning and made one for the tire people to check it out. I expect I can get the less than two miles to my tire store. If, a big if, their inspector has time when I go in I might even be able to get the car inspection done. Otherwise, I will be taking it back on the 5th for that.

We had some actual rain last night. Right now it is about 42o and sunny. We may get some snow showers later this afternoon.

Time to see if I have a load of laundry I can do before I go out.

No ice here, but 40ish and rain. Rained hard overnight, and we need it.

No snow here either but lots of rain through the night!  Christy went out to meet her long-time best friend.  The always get together several times when she comes up here.  They met in 6th grade and have bee close friends ever since.

They raise chickens at her house and she brought alone a rooster that had to meet his end and we cooked it up for the broth which I will be canning.  When I'm finished here I'm going to out and sort out the best meat and grind it up to make Chicken salad for sandwiches.  I love it when she brings this stuff with her!

I wish you a great day...better than yesterday but not as good as tomorrow.  Make it your own in every way.  I'll be back when I can!

Good morning, Mother Nature's giving us plus seven today, with fog and freezing drizzle. Monday we had minus thirty.

Nothing going on here except an Amazon order due and a last load of wash. Farrah has gotten demanding for her knuckle sandwiches. Lately, every time I sit down, she props in front of my feet, looking up encouragingly. I knuckle the area between her ears while, with my ring finger, I scratch above her eyes.

Meet and greets decided against getting together for Thanksgiving this year, so, I don't plan on more than a hot turkey sandwich. I received a free turkey for spending a certain amount at the grocery, so I'll be having a lot of turkey, perhaps through spring.

Here's hoping everyone is having a good day and enjoying being with family and friends.

Good morning..

Raining here ,went to bed with it raining and it is still doing it! At least we don't have to shovel it!
If weather permits we will take away the garbage. Then home to make a pot of soup...think chicken noodle is in order.

Mycheal, good to see you! Happy Thanksgiving to you.

Good Morning!  We're supposed to have some snow flurry's today and it already started that.  I hope it doesn't decide to build up.

Christy and I are making one more trip to WM today before she leaves tomorrow.  I'm going to miss having her around!  I sure wish she lived just a bit closer!

We've had some busy days...talked constantly!  I love it when she decides to come visit!  Now I'm off to visit some more.  I wish you all a good day.  Make it your own in every way!

I never thought of it that way - but a good thought.  Especially with all the "Medicare" commercials we have been inundated with.

It must have snowed a bit overnight. None stuck on the ground but car windshields had some. Ground is still fairly warm.  Heavy snow at the football game last night off Lake Erie.

Sure was a mess up Scranton way. One of the major routes up around that area was at a standstill with two lanes (northbound I think) closed to traffic. One of those storm chaser video guys was stuck in it. He said it was freezing cold. A concern there was how the drivers might run out of gas trying to keep warm while waiting for the road to get cleared. It seems the first responders and police couldn't get through to the accident itself and had to find a way around to the lanes going in the other direction in order to assist.

My sister was out in it down here. The snow was not laying here but the air was so damp and bitterly cold that she was having trouble warming up. She was still chilled an hour or so after she got home. I, on the other hand, stayed in. I didn't even venture out to the mail box just across the street.

I spent the day on the computer, doing a few clean up chores and the rest of the day reading (with intervals of snoozing) wrapped up in my couch blanket and weighed down by both cats. Shortly, I will be back on the sofa to watch some TV and entertain Shan who has designated early evening as playtime whether I want to play or not. He is pretty insistent.

Time to make my evening :coffee:

Hadn't noticed last year, I guess I was so busy still unpacking but this year can't help notice how the sun is barely in the backyard that cooks during the summer - the house, only one story casts a huge shadow and then where I thought the sun being lower would reach in and shine on my front porch it doesn't - that porch overhang is far wider than I realized - this is the time of year that gives me the creeps - the days are shorter and shorter then Christmas but about a week after New Years all of a sudden life has promise in that I can actually see the sun staying longer and it appears to me brighter -

Ok 7 weeks - I can handle anything for only 7 weeks - Need to stop kicking myself for not accomplishing as much as I think I should and just back off, take it easy and read - yep, that is it read with music in the background - It's easy to order salad makings and this winter I may even order some of the prepared ready to cook meals that our H.E.B. offers - hmm I think I may even do a week long something or other - like a week of walking even with my walker or a home spa week or a week of packing up books I won't ever read again and I've lost interest in the subject matter or even a week of several hours a day learning a new piano piece. Yep, that is it - Seven weeks of a week long weekly focus plus reading and yes, I will find those Gregorian Chant CDs to play, oh oh and yes, pull out my Dulcimer and play some old mountain music.

Ok pulling this together after having only asked for suggestions in the other chat space from those who are alone for Christmas - I've been struggling since I can no longer fly to my daughter's in NC - her boys flying in from Philly and Seattle and my son drives up to Lubbock to be with their boys and Cooper, one of the twins, drives down from Denver - feel a sense of satisfaction to see Son and Daughter make the effort to be with their Children which is what I did as they moved away but now I can't manage the trips and so I need a new way to make the day special that I'm struggling so as not to just ignore the holiday as a time to get through.

MarsGal

I love Gregorian chants. They are so soothing. And the Dulcimer, my fourth grade teacher played one. I remember she brought it into school one day to show us

I got rid of a lot of my Christmas things, but kept the ones I thought would go well in a small space, and I would be able to keep out of the reach of the cats. So, the table that my all-in=one computer (which I have barely used yet) will be temporarily occupied by my table top tree will be decorated with the mini ornaments, the Christmas mugs will occupy my mug tree, and other Christmas themed shelf things will find niches out of harms way.

Sue has organized the annual Christmas get-together with her friends, and somehow I get to participate now. There will be six of us. This year the dinner will be an afternoon affair rather than evening at a restaurant I've been wanting to try. She is no longer keen on driving at night, neither am I, and the others have not objected.

We escaped the snow that upper PA, Maryland and West Virginia got. It doesn't look like it even froze last night. Wonder how that happened.

Good morning, hushed today, with some snow expected to cover the present ice outside. I've managed my meet and greets, daily chores and fed Farrah. That's about the extent of it this morning.  :cup:  :study:

Hello Everyfriend!  My daughter left about 1 half hour ago and I missed her before she was out of the driveway.  I love it when she comes to visit and this was a longer visit than usual!  We  talked a blue streak while she was here and we remembered a lot of stuff that happened while she was growing up!  I'll be very happy to see her return...whenever that happens!

Now I have stuff to get done that I let go while she was here.  I have the first load of laundry in the washer already.  wish me luck in my catchup.

We were supposed to get snow and freezing rain too but when it came, it only stayed about a half hour and then just turned to rain an then tapered off!  I guess we were among the lucky Pennsylvanians!  I'll try to check back in before I hit the haystack tonight but just in case I don't, have a good day tomorrow!

Glad y'all from Pa. missed the brunt of the winter storm... Still a bit cold for us but the forecast is a warm-up next week...

MarsGal the thought of a small decorated Tree has me thinking - I love natural although I've saved several boxes of really old tree decorations - they are no longer made as the were back before WWII when I was young - I gave some to my daughter when she visited last this fall - anyhow all to say I think I will get a small evergreen that I can plant in the backyard - Only keep it in the house a couple of days which is fine with me and except for a star on top just seeing the green conical shape is what would please me more than a tree with lighting and colorful decorations... What would really be great is if someone in the area sells a bundle of spruce bows - with all our live pine trees they are Loblolly pines with little to no scent as compared to Spruce that grows further north.

Our tradition was not to decorate till the night before Christmas - growing up the front room that was called a sun porch with windows all round and no heat or AC vent was closed off and at night after we were asleep Mom and Dad set the room up for Christmas - a few times I remember waking and hearing a sewing machine that I was informed were the little men - every year Mom made new clothes for our dolls and a new Christmas dress - We did not have a room we could close off and so we did everything Christmas eve getting to bed if we were lucky an hour before my children woke bouncing in - They used to hang their stocking at the foot of their bed and so I started putting a tangerine and a special Christmas cookie in the Stockings to hold them off just a bit before they came charging in because they knew not to go into the living room till their Dad went first to light the Tree and check that all was OK...  ;)

Again, all to say Advent has been an important part of my Christmas and so any decoration won't be going up til the weekend before Christmas -

During Advent the 4th is the feast of St. Barbara where a platter with a cloth and some soil full of grass seed was planted that hopefully is grown enough to be green and then the big one on the 6th is the Feast of St. Nickolas that the night before letters were written and left on the fireplace to find in the morning a small gift like a new toothbrush or a few new pencils or a jar of handcream or a new screwdriver and the biggie the box of Christmas books with a new one always on top - each year a new book added to the pile, that was put back up after the New Year, made quite a pile that I distributed to the kids after they married however, I started my own pile a few years ago so I'm back to quite a large box of Christmas books.

The 8th is the feast of the Immaculate Conception that was a church attending day for us and then somewhere along the way we usually honored Hanukkah with a meal featuring traditional Jewish food that a couple of good friends joined us and finally, we celebrated St. Lucia on the 14th only we did not have the Swedish tradition of the eldest daughter wearing a crown of lite candles dressed in white however, for us it meant all the candle-holders with new candles we used to celebrate through Christmas were brought out - Wreathes on the front door and in the windows happened the weekend before Christmas and so Advent was full and gradually it lead up to the climax Christmas Day when we were young however, as teens, we joined my mother and as teens my children joined me as we attended Midnight Mass and ALWAYS on our return we had bacon, lettuce and tomato sandwiches on rye bread with a glass of cider and off to bed till Christmas morning - The trick in our after midnight Mass supper was to not wake the younger ones. As a child I was the oldest and my youngest sister is 15 years younger, along with a brother who was 13 years younger so that my sister just 2 1/2 years younger and I had to be as silent as possible on our return from Mass.

Lots of memories - I bet we all have them - they do makeup the fabric of our lives don't they - all that is just memory and now I may not be creating traditions but certain aspects of the past stay with me and keeping Advent is one so... Decorating the house will be gradual with a tree only put up a day or so before - if it is a live tree I doubt it can stay up in the house till the 6th of January which was the end of the Holidays for us - we or rather I should say I packed up everything on the 7th. I was lucky if I could get my husband to take the emptied tree to the curb or tree collection location. In Austin they collected all trees to be chipped into a mulch used on the lawns in the City Parks.

Jane yes, when our daughters leave after a visit it seems so quiet for a few days doesn't it - I'm usually off kilter for a day or two - and yes, eating becomes more than filling our tummy but a nice meal with food cooked that is outside the norm. How far away does your daughter live? If she is driving does she have to spend the night on the road before she reaches her home or can she drive the distance in one day?

Oh yes, P.S. MarsGal - I will only be alone for Christmas - Thanksgiving I have always been with Paul and Sally, my son, who lives only a few streets away - I drove the 9 hours when they were living in El Paso and flew to Beaverton, outside of Portland, then drove the 7 hours all those years they lived in Lubbock - after the boys graduated high school they moved back to Lubbock,(Texas Tech) Paul and Sally drove over to be with me while I was living in Austin.

Just stepped outside to water my porch plants and it is lovely out - warming is upon us - tra la...

JaneS

Hello my friends!  I'm finished for the day.  The last load of laundry is in the dryer and as soon as it stops, I'll be heading for the haystack!

BARB, the daughter that was here this week just lives in Maryland.  It's about a two and a half hour drive from here and she does come pretty regularly.  I love it when she's here!  However, I have a son and a daughter who live here in town.  The daughter has been in Houston, TX welcoming her new grandson into the world.  And I also have a daughter who lives in Jenks, OK. Until the new little boy joined our family my only 3 great grands lived in OK and that's where they are now.  I get down to visit them about once a year if I'm lucky!  It sounds like you live in Texas!

Now I heard the dryer stop so I'll go fold the towels and then head for the haystack!  I wish you all a peaceful night's sleep and a happy day tomorrow!  Make it your own in every way!  And don't forget to stop by and share it with us.  We miss you when you're not around!

Good morning everyone, I hope everyone everywhere has a good day.

CallieOK

Good Afternoon,

Re: being alone on holdays:

Both my family and extended family live more or less locally but I haven't been with either one in several years for Thanksgiving. My choice!

When I "got my act together" after my husband died when I was 57, my church was having a Community Dinner and, since one son was married and the other one had moved out of state, I began working that. It was a lot of fun and I was surprised by the number of people I knew who didn't have families and attended.
Then other churches began to get involved and, eventually, the dinner was moved to the ballroom of the local college - which was too big for me.
Son also moved back and we usually went to other family's gathering in a town about 30 miles from here - until that son got married to a girl from the same town.  I continued to drive the 30 miles and tried to split time between families until that became too confusing and I decided to decline both. So I choose to spend the day "leisurely".  ;D
This year, #2son/wife flew to Cancun for Thanksgiving and other son/wife, who are the parents of 3 Grands, two of who are married or engaged, will be dealing with their own split families.

One of the extended family celebrates on Christmas Even and the other one does Christmas morning.  So I always had Christmas "supper" (didn't have to fix a big dinner   ;D)  Since one son/family are now having to share with in-laws, we'll see how it develops.

Hope Everyfriend is having a nice day.

JaneS

Goodnight Everyfriend!  It's late and I'm tired and ready for the haystack!  It's been a lazy day!  I'll see you tomorrow!

Callie, I found Hawaiian buns finally! They are like hens teeth to find but one store got them in  and now I can make your sliders with them instead of the plain buns.

No news here, still an unusual winter, snow then rain and then more snow.

Meet and greets going well, Farrah has an upcoming annual vet appointment early next month and I need to water my plants. I need to do a quick wipe down of the bathroom and kitchen as well. It seems never ending sometimes.

Amy has been very helpful in one of my latest dilemmas. A woman I watch for packages for had gifted, or more like unloaded, three bags of apples. Unfortunately, the donations' room is closed for repairs and I don't generally carry many baking supplies. Presently I have 16 left out of 48 and have told her again, that I cannot accept food, while appreciating the gesture.

Thanksgiving is coming up this week, and no plans, as no one is getting together this year with all the nasty weather. There will be the annual potluck dinner here, but I think staying home is more appealing.

BarbStAubrey

Patricia 19 for what it is worth and if you haven't already why not cook them down with some honey and cinnamon and put the sauce in a couple of jars or plastic sacks so you could freeze them and pull out some sauce to accompany a meal later this winter - you've too many to do all of them but I like to bake them in the micro wave with some butter and either brown sugar or honey for breakfast.

Will be two years December 1 since I moved into this house and finally yesterday my bedroom is really a bedroom with only the bedroom furniture - not placed yet where I want it but,  finally went to bed last night not feeling I was sleeping in the back storage room piled with boxes, lamps that cannot find the shades, several pieces of art that the movers broke the glass, a couple of chairs and small tables I had not yet decided where I wanted them, an old TV stand that I hate tossing but the sellers left their gigantic wall TV and have not yet decided where to put my TV - hate TVs in a bedroom. Anyhow where there are now all sorts of things to find homes for and more books to shelve I can see the light at the end of the tunnel- What a change even in my disposition -  Feel genuinely happy rather than gritching in my brain studio that I was not accomplishing enough or working hard enough plus, finding one thing after the other either missing or broken had me by the heals till I finally had to realize it is what it is...

Moving late in life is far more time consuming than I ever imagined - when I started I could sling boxes of heavy books around with the best of them and within these two years age caught up and now I can no longer even pickup a box of books... a lot to readjust however, where I was living all my friends had passed and Austin was no longer anything I could even recognize with all its change - so I was leaving a place I no longer recognized moving to another place I have to come to terms with that is also changing before our very eyes. Best thing my son and daughter-in-law only live 5 streets away which is a big plus in many ways including the ease of no longer having a bit over a 2 and a 1/2 hour drive one way to visit.

Well onward - looking forward to an early supper - had a grocery delivery from Whole Foods that included a container of their Butternut Squash soup - theirs is second best - the best I ever tasted was from a small restaurant in Georgetown north of Austin run by the handicapped.

Yesterday was busy and tiring too! Today doesn't look any different other than we are not off to the city.  Will get some baking done and tidy up.

Raining at the moment but it just may get some muscle and turn into snow. There has been snow out west and to the north of us so we do know it is coming.

Better get at it or the day will just slip away..

Good morning, we had snow and icy rain most of yesterday so the snow graders and dump trucks were on all night in what is becoming the norm. Temperatures are supposed to plummet this week and rise again on the weekend, so not much different.

I didn't get anything caught up yesterday, wasn't really in the mood to do much. I spent the day online and on the phone. One of our meet and greets ended up falling last night and going to the hospital, but should be home soon. He wears his phone on a loop, so was able to call for help after a short time. He has promised us he'll get a medical alert in case of other issues.

Barb, thank you for the suggestions. Jane, have you received any photos of the new baby?

Hello to everyone, and I'm off to see what has happened overnight.

Amy

Good morning

Woke to snow on the ground and more falling to grace the ground. Don't that just tickle your toe nails?

Jane, where are you???

A few things to do in town this morning then home to work.

Here I am, AMY!  I had a very busy day yesterday and I was heading for bed when I realized that I had not been by to greet my friends.  And I was too tired to do anything about it.

About the pictures of the baby, she's sent me a bunch of them but so far, I haven't figured out how to get them to this place to share them.  She's home now so maybe she'll help me do that.  He is adorable!  I want to hug him but I have a feeling that's not going to happen.  Darn!

PATRICIA, please keep the snow and ice in Alaska where it belongs.  I'm not in favor of winter any more!

Now I have to get busy or I'll lose this day, too.  I wish you all a pleasant day.  Do as you please!

Good morning, minus 19 here and minus 33 expected overnight before warming on Friday. Jane, we normally don't have that much snow, with very little humidity, and we've never had freezing rain before this year. So, no promises.

One interesting article, about affecting climate change, is that we're pumping so much groundwater that it's affecting the earth's rotation.

I see Bubble is offering to post any pictures for you if you have them online or in email.

Amy, yes, he's already back home again, and his doctor is arranging a Medic Alert for him. It seems we're none of us that steady anymore, and one of the reasons we keep our meet and greets going. Thanks for asking.
