Shirley, Pork makes a delicious chop suey.  Sounds like some your family is prone to some foolish accidents, and everyone suffers. Not fair. And what lousy luck with your painters. Are they going to find helpers so they can finish the job ?

Amy, I woke at 4:30..wide awake. I broke a house rule..did a load of laundry at 6 a.m. instead of the posted starting time of 7 a.m. I don't feel too guilty though. I have been awakened by people knocking on doors as early as 6 a.m.

Phyllis, I would sure love to hear the words "rain" out here in our parched So. Ca. Enjoy some of the lovely stuff for me.

Larry, That's a long drive to have lunch with friends. Keep safe, and enjoy your friends.

Gloria, I am sure glad too. I have so enjoyed shopping on line. You too are expecting some rain. We are having another overcast morning but sun should break out about noon. Every time I need to ask the kids to help me in some way, I feel like I should need to apologize. They always replay, "you did the same or more for us", so that helps, but I still don't like to impose on their lives.

Hal, I am planning a quiet day also. Just one trip for lunch, and another at 2 o'clock for a program to honor our nurses here. This is National Nurses Week. And our gals deserve all the honors we can give them.

Time to go down for lunch with friends. Back later. June
As long as we are here, let's dance.

I am certainly a believer in "to each his own" ..

I  am glad that I watched/skimmed
the movie "50 Shades of Grey",
so I will understand
when people talk about it..

To me it was more like
"50 Shades of Messed Up",
with a rather sad,  but
predictable  ending.

Have a great day,  EVERYONE!

I also watched the series
"Olive Kitteridge" on HBO Now.

Great Acting,  but one of the most
depressing movies/series that I have
watched.

Good Afternoon,

Sandy,  I agree with your opinion of "Olive Kitteridge"!  I read the book and watched the HBO movie and never did understand what was supposed to be so fascinating about the character.  Guess my boat floats on different waters.

Since it's Friday the 13th,  I'm almost afraid to mention how good I feel today.    A friend who has the same kind of "off" days I do described the feeling perfectly when she said,  "I feel as if my gyroscope is out of sync."
Fortunately, today, I'm alert, not achey and clear-headed.

So I've been to the grocery store (which I would really rather not do on Friday), put away the groceries, refilled the hummingbird feeder that the lawn guys knocked off and watered my "pot garden".

While I was outside, a cardinal was either lecturing me or announcing my presence to one and all.   :)  A chickadee flew into the holly bush very near me but wasn't quite brave enough to come to the feeder where I was standing. It "chatted" a bit, though.

Hope Everyfriend Everywhere is having a lovely day.

I have not read Shades of Grey nor did I ever see the movie. Not a prude, they just didn't interest me enough to take me away from the other books and movies I was enjoying.  The critics didn't like either one, as I recall, but the public bought it in huge numbers anyway.

And I agree, too, that Olive Kitteridge was boringly depressing.  I can listen to the evening news and be depressed without wasting my time reading a book that turns my mood down.   :(

The sun is out and it is warm and humid.  Summer is on our doorstep.  I would send some rain out to you, June, if I could.  We are a little tired of it around here.

June--They keep promising us rain, but it never seems to arrive.  Nurses deserve to be honored.  From my observations, they work very hard.

Sandy--Guess you spent a good part of the day watching movies.

Callie--Glad to hear you're feeling so good today.

Phyllis--I would appreciate your sending some of that rain this way, too.

I suppose when we were younger and reading those books in secret. Maybe with a girl friend or under your sheets with a flash light. Then we thought it was something. Now when we can read what we want we get nothing out of books like "50 shades of Gray" I remember having my name at number 57 at the library. Think I took it back the next day for the next person on the list.  The Language is what I can't understand why needed.  Even the Movie "Grandma" every second word was the F word.  I was even stuck in the Theatre with it. $7 wasted.

I haven't been to a theater in years, unclean bathrooms and overpriced snacks,  garbage stuck to the floors that are already sticky, audience yells and boos at the screen and the sound is pitched so high as to deafen you if I was already heading that way, I prefer to check it out on my computer when it comes to video.

I remember wanting to see Magic Mike and bought the video. My mistake as it made me very uncomfortable and I gave it away.

A good Friday the 13th to all.

We have been out side wo*king around the yard....seems there is always some more to do.  It is beautiful out and I really am enjoying the weather.  Guess it is to get really warm next while we are away.  I hope that means the weather is going to be equally nice in Chicago.

Isn't this TSA thing a mess at many airports across the country?  Makes me wonder if they aren't trying to prove a point as all of a sudden it is getting all this attention.  They are saying you need to show up 3 hours before your flight.  Then there is the mess in Phoenix yesterday with the computers causing tons of luggage to not make it on the planes.  Looked like thousands of bags sitting in a parking lot in the 100 plus degree temps.  Sure hope no one packed any perishables in their bag.

Dr. Dave and Matt were to go camping tonight's with the Boy Scouts but unfortunately Matt's playoff game for lacrosse is tonight, so they have to stay for the game and miss the camp out. The playoff game was to be Saturday or Sunday! Today he was hurt on the playground at recess and has bruised ribs, so may not even get to play.  We are going no matter what as we are rather a part of the teams cheering section.  The game is at Denver University Stadiem and the lacrosse opponent for DU will be practicing before our game and should be fun to watch.

I wish you all a good rest of your day.

Actually Joan,   I did not
spend much time watching movies today ...

I watched the HBO series  "Olive Kitteridge" a
few weeks ago,   and only watched about a half
hour of "50 Shades" ..  (enough to get
the drift!)

Kelly

Hi Everyone
I must be a prude I think

In reading the first five lines of Wikipedia regarding Fifty shades of gray, it tells me what the book or film is all about.

Someone said we are all different, well good job I am a prude!!

Kelly

Sandy

No body is judging you, Kelly...
(other then your self)
"Prude"  or not....

Kelly

Hi Sandy
I am not judging myself at all!

Simply saying that if you read the first five lines of the book title it tells you what the book or film is about.

Is that normal behaviour?

Kelly

angelface555

#283
Kelly, no need to be defensive about your tastes in film or literature. From what I have read over twenty years or more in print, there is nothing normal or the same normal  in everyone's viewpoint.

As Joan says, whatever floats your boat and if it doesn't involve animals, children or coercion, or in public why judge?

Is there another subject available?

June Drabek

The tribute to our nursing staff went very well, and I'm sure the nurses present were very pleased. It was really a new commitment by the Nurses themselves but they were also greatly honored by all they do for us. Some of them rose and thanked us for being there, and gave short talks of the work they do. I believe this will be a yearly program from now on. Always new girls coming in and they all..old or new..deserve recognition.

I came home bushed so had a short nap...would have like to have slept more, but I don't want it to be a habit of long naps, then late to bed and early risings.Too much is missed that way.

Kelly, you were calling yourself a Prude. That is where the judging entered the conversation. You are certainly entitled to your own opinion.

As long as we are here, let's dance.

Kelly

Hi June
I think people are missing the point here.

It is not whether I said I am a prude or someone thinks I said it.

The importance here is on whether people think the 'theme' of the book and film of fifty shades of grey is suitable book reading or film watching.

Kelly

Kelly

Hi angel
I am not being defensive about what I like or don't like.

Society today has changed in this day and age from what I was brought up to.

And as usual when peoples viewpoints differ, the thought of changing the subject matter is raised!

I am very tired tonight so will go to an early bed and hopefully read a bit. I don't want to go to sleep too early and then wake up in the early hours of the morning.

I hope our Janie is having a wonderful time in Texas and didn't wear herself out getting ready. Hugs girl !

Have a good night dear friends, a peaceful sleep and a happy tomorrow. Hugs, Love and Prayers. June

IF any of you are planning to move into
a Senior Facility, you may want to check out the following information:
Always a step ahead
On the first day at the new seniors complex , the manager
addressed all the new seniors pointing out some of the rules:
"The female sleeping quarters will be out-of-bounds for all males,
and the male dormitory to the females.
Anybody caught breaking this rule will be fined $20 the first time."
He continued, " Anybody caught breaking this rule the second time
will be fined $60.
Being caught a third time will cost you a fine of $180.
Are there any questions?"
At this point, Cortelloni, an older gentleman, stood up in the crowd and inquired:
"How much for a season pass???

Good queiston.

School Play

Matt's dad picked him up from school to take him to a dental appointment. Knowing the parts for the school play were supposed to be posted today, he asked his son if he got a part.

Matt enthusiastically announced that he'd gotten a part.

"I play a man who's been married for twenty years."

"Congratulations! That's great, son. Keep up the good work and before you know it they'll be giving you a speaking part."

Food For Thought

So Alone
Michael T. Smith

It was dark. Wind pushed the rain sideways. I never saw the streets of midtown Manhattan so empty. Ahead of me, a canyon of light. The rain beat down. I held my umbrella firmly in my hand. Each time I turned a corner, the wind attempted to rip it away.

Littering the sidewalks, the turned-inside-out, abandoned umbrellas of those before me lay scattered - lost souls.

A yellow cab passed and sprayed me with water.

My shoes ...soaked. The shine I'd polished them to earlier that day ...long gone. They clicked on the cement with each lonely step I took.

            Alone!

A former kid from a tiny fishing village in Nova Scotia, now in a sea of humanity.  Although, on this night, the millions of residents huddled inside with their computers or televisions.

I was alone in the vast city of New York.

A subway train rumbled beneath my feet. The roar of a jet approaching JFK airport passed overhead. I saw its blinking lights briefly between the towering skyscrapers.

Ten more blocks to go. I'd soon be on the train to Jersey City and my apartment.  I'd had a fun night with a few co-workers in "The City" as New York is referred to. We'd shared drinks and food in celebration of the holiday season.

I thought back to the carefree days on the coast of Nova Scotia - cold winters, pleasant summers. We swam in a brook, fished from the wharves and in the lakes,
laughed and enjoyed a simple life.

I stopped and looked around. The sidewalks were empty. Only a few cars hissed by on the wet, rarely-empty streets. Lights everywhere. "How did I end up here?" I asked out loud.

Years earlier, I had someone call me about a job in Manhattan. "No thank you." I said. "New York is not for me."

Yet, here I was, midtown Manhattan, alone, in the middle of the night, walking in the rain.

I finally made it to 34TH street. I walked down the stairs, got on the subway, fled "The City" under the Hudson River and got off at Newport, Jersey City and walked the block to my apartment.

I showered the cold and grit of Manhattan from my body, climbed into bed.  My wife and kids were in Ohio. I lay under the blankets and wondered how, in this teaming sea of humanity, I felt so alone.

            So alone!

Gloria

Good morning everyone. Could be I will say good night at the end of this. No sleep at all. Listened to thunder and it was so hot and humid in here I felt miserable wishing I could set the AC up myself. Not to cool but for the dehumidify part of it. I had to close windows because the rain was coming in. Not that it would have helped much to have them open. Had 2 fans going but did not help. Only mid May and I want that AC running already. Even my CNA  was complaining about the humidity. I am so glad to have this girl back, my apartment is cleaner now that it was the last time she used to come and that was in January. My furniture is all polished and shiny again. The others ta=hat came did goo with the little they did but would do 1 room and just want to sit after that. This girl keeps doping something and talks while she is working. Lot of laughs with her, too.

KELLY   Moghrey Mie, only movies I watch lately are when I find an old one on TV. Have not been in a theater in many years. Some TV programs are pretty raunchy, too, so watch very little of it.

HAL  only thing I have on tap for today is hopefully getting a little sleep.

JOAN  I share many of the goodies you post in the mornings. I sent one of your chuckles to the resident assistant here and he put it in his monthly news letter. I was surprised to see it. Now he wants more of them. Like you, he has to be careful what he includes in those letters. We do have a few grumps here with no sense of humor.

HAL  I saw that on the news last night. Sure glad I do not fly anymore. How about all that luggage sitting there at that Airport. So much for everything run by computers at times.

JEANNE P  the books you mentioned were tame by what is out there these days.

JOAN  I am not a prude either but I would not give 2¢ for Shades of Grey but they sold out fast.

GLORIA de  I had my hair cut yesterday by the lady who comes here. She did a terrible job this time, it is is sticking out in places, no shape or style to it. S friend and I went to see Forever Amber but I never thought it was a bad movie. I really only went because Cornell Wilde was in it and he was my favorite actor at the time. I saw him in the movies he was in A Song to Remember about composer Chopin and he was Chopin and that was when I started enjoying Classical music.

MARYTX  seems these days no one knows what morals are.

JUNE  like you I hate asking my sons or anyone for help. Just like when my helper is working in in here I feel so guilty that I am not helping her.

CALLIE  good avatar. Did you take that picture of the hummer a the feeder? I sure miss seeing all the birds I used to. About all I see in the front are sparrows while in the back because of the trees is where all the birds are.

PHYLLIS  it felt like mid summer here today with the humidity.  When I went into the hallway to go down stairs today it felt like the heat was on. Windows at both ends were open and of course that lets the humidity inside.

JENNY  enjoy your time in Chicago, fest part will be seeing family of course. Gosh for about 20 years I got to Chicago twice a year. Only saw Ohare airport though. Saw those airport lines on the news and then all that luggage sitting in the hot sun. Makes me glad again that I no longer fly anywhere.

KELLY  nothing wrong with being a prude.

JOAN  I'll have some of that pecan coffee cake to have later.  Love coffee cake and pecans are so tasty. So Alone, hard to believe in a place like NYC. True about rainy nights, even here, so few cars going by on the road and no one out. When it is snowing hard the plows are always going by and it is nosier. Thank you for all today's goodies. Think I will try to get some sleep.

Good morning, Amy.  Seems most everyone but us are getting rain--sure wish it would come our way.  I cleaned out my pantry not long ago.  There were many expired things that had to go to the trash.

Lloyd--Good morning.  Sorry you had a bad night.  Hopefully you can catch up with a nap today.

Good morning, Joan and all the other Friends. The Pecan Coffee cake sounds delicious this morning. Along with some fruit will finish up my breakfast.

Hard to believe the SUN is shining this morning. Not sure what the temperature is, but it feels a little chilly in the house.  I was thinking about putting the heat on, but after moving around a bit, it feels better.  II just heard on the weather report and more showers are predicted for this afternoon Back to the 50's  tomorrow.   Here it is the middle of May.  What is happening to our plantet???

I, too , have a up and down night. I go from the bed to the recliner and then back to the bed almost all night.

Joan,  I, also, need to clean out my pantry and my freezer.  I keep little bits of this and that, knowing very well, eventually, they will get tossed out.  I know I have a lot of out-of-date things in my pantry.

I hope all the friends will have a great day wherever they live.

Just been out walkabouts, not far....can only walk downhill or uphill, hm, yes, I do have a choice... :P I chose downhill to the bottom of our site, then branched off to the left, through a grassed and pebbled walkway, stopped at the end, then back home again....Leg has calmed so can be trusted a little but my MS affects my whole body, and after some time of walking I become more disorientated, but on the whole, as my leg is today I can walk with more of a speed, that is until I become dizzy....Weather is dry and warm, we stopped to speak to one neighbour just a few homes down the slope, he was out cleaning his windows, that is one thing about our parkhomes, they do have a lot of windows, on the plus side they let in plenty of light, on the negative, they all need cleaning.....
...............................................
Wishing everyfriends an enjoyable Saturday......

Joan, your " thought of the day " is just that...food for thought...and something to ponder over....

Good morning, Joy.  Once I get in bed, I usually stay there, although I get up early.  Since I have a hospital bed it helps a lot with my breathing.

Vanilla-Jackie--Good morning/afternoon.  That's great that you are able to get out and walk the dogs.
