CHUCKLES

Birthday

My young grandson called the other day to wish me Happy Birthday. He asked me how old I was, and I told him, "62."

He was quiet for a moment, and then he asked, "Did you start at 1?"

Food For Thought

Give It Our All
(By Chuck Swindoll)

There are 1,130 frostbitten miles, mountain ranges, blizzards, hungry beasts, and frozen seas between Anchorage and Nome. This awful trek is the scene of the ultimate endurance test known as the Iditarod Sled Dog Race, where twelve huskies pull a sled and its driver through the most grueling, inhuman conditions one can fathom. The most frequent champion of recent years is a woman named Susan Butcher, whose tough-minded fixation on winning earned her the nickname Ayatollah Butcher.

The secret, she will tell you, is her own mind-set and the training of those dogs, which gives new meaning to the word 'serious.' Her 150-dog kennel is a thing to behold. Shortly after each pup's birth, while it is still blind, she holds it in her hands and breathes her breath into its nose. That way, she claims, each one will associate her smell with comfort and encouragement. The rapport begins with that breathing-into-the-nose routine. She personally feeds, trains, massages, and -- on a rotation basis -- sleeps with each dog. She personally nurses them to health when they are injured. She is infinitely patient with them, talks to them, believes in them, even sings to them (old folk songs by Bob Dylan and Joan Baez, plus a few Irish lullabies). The objective? To bond with them. It pays. They have saved her life on the trail more than once. Back in 1979, she led her dog team to the 20,320-foot summit of Mount McKinley. It took forty-four days.

What a woman! One reporter described her as having "a stiff spine...a stubborn mind-set," which is what is needed to endure moose attacks, blizzards so severe that one time for five hours she couldn't see the lead dog, and a sudden plunge into icy water (Granite and Maddie, the mushers, pulled her out).

The Christian life isn't an eleven-day race. It's a lifetime journey full of more dangers and pitfalls than a hundred Iditarods. So it's foolish to think we can enter it half-heartedly or sustain it easily. To survive it calls for help from above and toughness from within. If Susan Butcher is willing to give that kind of effort to win a race that is incredible in the eyes of the world - with temporary and fleeting glory, how much more should we, running a race that matters for all eternity, give it our all.

Lloyd, do you want to take a picture of yourself with the webcam (there is a setting for that depending on the kind of cam), or crop the one with the 3 of you? or maybe post that one on your profile?  I did not quite understand your wish.

so_P_bubble

Sorry, I am not polite today: forgot to greet you all with a sunny GOOD MORNING.  and wishes for a good week end.
Here the weather is radiant, summery and that makes me happy.
blueberry strudel?  I never had that, sounds good.  Thank you.

Good morning, Bubble.  It's still dark here, but the local early morning broadcast said we will have rain most of the day.

I wish I could send you some of our sun: it brings joy to the heart.

Bubble--Thank you for your intentions.  We usually have sun here in Florida.  This year we have had almost no rain, so there are many wild fires.  The rain is desperately needed.

Good morning, Kelly.

Hi Joan
You can have some of our rain!!

Here it has been a wet winter but still the Sea of Galilee is a meter lower than the normal should be level.   I can tell you that is a lot of water.  It is also our main source of drinking water, with the Jordan.  Of course there is desalination too.

QuoteJune, right under your photo in the gallery were choices for [UnApprove] [Edit] [Delete].  I clicked on Delete, a screen asked if I was sure and I clicked Delete again, and it was gone.  That's all you would need to do if you make a mistake in the future.

Jeanne Lee, I've been trying to delete a picture in the Gallery, too, but those options don't appear for me.  All I get is an Edit option that just allows me to change the name and/or the description of the photo.

I don't have head knocks to use as an excuse, Lloyd.  I'm just plain dense about some things!   :uglystupid2:

In spite of your "head knocks" it seems to me that you do pretty darned good!

Amy

Good morning everyone.
Nice to see familiar faces making their way back home here. I know we all have a learning curve to get back in the groove but I am sure we will all master it in time...yes, even you Lloyd!

Laundry day today and tidy up.

Joan, thank you for breakfast.
Enjoy your day everyone.

Phyllis--Maybe one of these days I will give it a try.

Good morning, Lloyd.

Amy--Good morning.  Seems to me those "learning curves" are more difficult to negotiate these days.

JaneS

Good Morning Everyfriend!  We (the doggies and I) slept in again today!  It's really going to be hard to go back to work!

Lloyd, I haven't had the head knocks that you have either but when they all talk about posting pictures, I wonder why they have to do it in Greek.  I never did learn to speak, read or understand Greek.

Maybe I'm just in a state of denial!  Or maybe I don't want to put that much effort into using my eyes for an extended period.  After about 10 minutes on the computer I have to go do something else to rest my eyes.  And I know what they are telling me to do will take more than 10 minutes.

I hope you all have a lovely day and that those of you who need rain, get it and those of you who don't need rain, don't get it.  We are supposed to have s**w on Monday and my friend an I are planning a trip to the movies and lunch.  I really want to see that new Sally Field movie.  I hope "they" are wrong about the s**w!

Kelly

Hi JaneS
Good morning to you.

Kelly

Joy

Good morning, Joan and all the other Friends !

JaneS,  I am sorry that I couldn't help you with getting your picture posted. But, as you said, you would really need the picture first.   May is not that far away, so hopefully, you will be able to get one of your daughters to take the picture.

Joan, thanks for the breakfast this rainy Saturday morning.  I had to put the A/C on for a little while last night as it was kind of stuffy inside. It had gone up to almost 80 º yesterday.  Now, they are talking about snow tomorrow morning.

Nothing very exciting going on today.  Think I might try and get some laundry done, as it is starting to build up.  Since I live in an senior apartment complex, I don't have my own washer and dryer.  Takes me longer to get it done when I just can't gather it up every couple days and do it in my own place. There are 2 washers and 2 dryers in our laundry room.  I like to wait until later in the day, because most people get theirs finished early . That way, I usually don't have to wait  for the machines and I have the laundry room to myself.  Just takes me longer to get things done now.  Not one of my favorite chores.

And, Joan, when you have to have clean clothes, I hope that doesn't count for demerits.  LOL

I have been up since before it got light out, so I feel a little nap coming on before I get on with my day. It is so dreary out, that it makes for a sleepy day.

Enjoy the beginning of the week end.

Joy

The setting must have been changed because I did manage to delete before and now that options does not appear anymore.  Maybe a glitch?

JoanFL

Good morning, Janie.  I am sure it will be a bit tough going back to work after your extended leave.  Sure hope you don't get that predicted snow.

Kelly--Sorry but they don't go out of the city.:)

Joy--Good morning.  No demerits when you must have clean clothes.  I was up long before it got light, too.
