Good Sunday morning.   We are expecting about 5 or 6 in. of snow later this afternoon.  I think I am just going to go hibernate for the rest of this winter.  I am soooooooo sick of this cold  and snow.   BUt, I know I can't do anything about it, so I just might as well try to deal with it.

Callie,  I would think that would have been the same ice boat that I saw go out earlier in the morning.   They probably just drove it back to where they had parked their truck and trailer.   That was a long day  and I do hope they caught some fish.   Wouldn't have been my choice to spend the day like that...... but, everybody to their choice.

Hope everyone will have a great day.  Don't have time this morning to say anymore.

Hi Everyone. We will be in the mid-70's this afternoon and there is a 100% chance of rain around 5 pm.  Otherwise it will be a cloudy day.  I have had a couple of very tired days where I didn't feel like doing anything, including using my iPad when in my easy chair.  I am not sure today is going to be any better.  I had a very good nights sleep but just getting ready to face the day has left me tired (same old story).  I don't seem to be making any progress for recovery but will continue to be optimistic that better days are ahead.  I have read the postings since yesterday but am going to pass on individual comments once again.

Larry, good to hear from you.   Just praying that your condition improves.

Joy, it is sunny and 69 degrees here.  We might be having rain before the afternoon is over.  We were supposed to have rain yesterday but ended up with a beautiful warm sunny day.  Our son-in-law was over and mowed the lawn and everything looks good.  We don't have the energy (or backs) to do much yard work anymore.

Hope everyone has a good day.

Marilyne

Good morning everyone.  Just sprinkling a little this morning, but supposed to develop into another strong  Pineapple Express, by mid week.  That seems to be the story here in California - either too much rain, or not enough. Serious drought, or floods and mudslides. Never a reasonable amount of weather. I'm not complaining, just commenting . . . it's impossible to control Mother Nature.

Jean - your weather sounds ideal, but I know you have to face the possibility of hurricanes, when that season rolls around once again.  In the meantime, enjoy the comfortable temperatures!

Joy - sounds like you're fed up with Winter also, as most of us are.  I wish I had seen the ice boat, or any of the fishing shanties, when they came out of the water.  The ones that I saw pictures of were more elaborate than I had ever imagined!  I'm going to try to remember to tune in today, and hope to see some of them leaving the icy lake.

MarsGal - Sorry to hear about your sister's serious back problem.  What a bummer for her to deal with, when she has her daughter's gorgeous wedding to attend in April.  I hope she recovers quickly.

Mary Ann

It is 1:20 PM and Dot and I have been to church and had our usual at the Cholesterol Pit.  We also worked on solving the world's problems.

My cousins in Indy bought a Sears home in the mid-50s and after they died, the house is now in the names of their sons, Bob and Tom.  I saw a Sears site online last night and told Tom H about it.  He could not find it, but I just found it for him.  The reason he was looking for the site is that one of the houses was like what their family had with the exception of having dormers.

I think when I finish with S&F, I'm going to be ready for a nap.  I'll have to look for the ice fishing sites first.

Marilyne,  I was looking at the Two Harbors Boat Launch and TH Depot cams a little before 6:00 p.m. Central Time.  If there are vehicles parked at the boat launch there will probably be fishermen coming in.

Mary Ann,  my grandparents' house was a "catalog house" from the Gordon-Van Tyne company in Indiana. My sister and I inherited the "contents" when our aunt died. We found some boards in the attic stamped with the company name. Built about 1920.
It is still in existence and has been taken back to the original wood/brass fixtures.

Many fond memories of spending time there. I have the original catalog page from which it was ordered; they made a few changes in the kitchen arrangement.
I also have a taped conversation with an older lady who remembered seeing the parts being hauled from the train depot to the house site.

Many church services, including mine, were canceled today - mostly because of very low wind chill temperatures.  Some side streets are slick but, generally speaking, things are dry.

Callie, that would be interesting to find the catalog source of your grandparents' house.  Most people don't know much about the history of a house but I like to know a bit.  I know the plat name and the name of the salesman who sold our house to my parents.  The house was built in 1927 and we moved in January 1928 - between school semesters.  The house is now 91 years old and looks pretty good when I go by it.  One woman who lived there contacted me before she moved and I went there and had tea with her.  We had remodeled the kitchen and someone else had done another renovation.  We also added on two rooms and a half bath in 1947.

I'm wondering if the ice boat was a snowmobile.  I did not see it, so I don't know, but snowmobiles are used a lot in this part of the country.

Larry, I hope you get to feeling better.

Mary Ann

CallieOK

Mary Ann,  the ice boat didn't look like any snowmobile I've ever seen :)  and I found some that looked similar to this one in a couple of on-line sites.

Speaking of on-line sites,  here's a link to one that might help you find out more about the Sears house.

About Sears houses

I found the original catalog page while we were cleaning out the house after my aunt died in 1975.  Found lots of other family papers, too.  What a treasure!

Joy

Mary Ann, and Callie.    The "boat"  that I saw yesterday morning was what they call an "Air boat"  They use them on the Swamp tours in Florida,  especially in the Everglades.  It has a flat bottom and a big kind of a wire wheel sticking up in the back that has some sort of a fan that spins and that is what makes the boat go.  They are called Air boats.  I will try to find a picture.  I am quite sure that what Callie saw late in the afternoon yesterday leaving was probably the same one that I saw going out in the morning.

Will post a link when I find a picture.

Here is a link to a picture of an "Air Boat".  I didn't get to see the front of the one that went out on the lake yesterday, but the back looked exactly like this one.

It definitely wasn't a snowmobile.

I did see the front and the picture is like the one I saw leaving  but didn't look like anyone was sitting out in the open.
Wonder if it can be converted from water to ice use?    Thanks, Joy.

We have had local airboats for years that people use on some sloughs or rivers. They look similar to the one that Joy posted except the bottom of the boat isn't flat but more like an aluminum type rowboat with raised edges. They are very noisy!

MarsGal, I found this critique of Runciman and his book, https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/6677478-a-history-of-the-first-bulgarian-empire

I Googled because I was curious to see if there were or had been any Sears Catalog homes built in Fairbanks. One, Alaska Heritage House is a local B&B, and another private home at 111 Charles, with yet another one used as a business, Home Appliances, Services. I was surprised as I didn't believe any had made it here.

I also surprisingly found this photo and article about a winter airboat trip on 12/18/2011 from newspaper archives.  http://www.newsminer.com/winter-airboat-ride-down-the-chena-river-causes-a-small/article_0dcab934-e83c-5623-8682-e2d9dc0cb342.html

I have hunted all over for the above link because what showed on my cousin's e-mail did not work here.

As for the airboat, I have seen pictures of them, but never saw one in person.  Also, I did not see what you ladies saw in Two Harbors Boat Launch.

While I was hunting, I was half watching a very exciting golf game and I had some trouble with my message (my fault) and it was hard to look for the link and to watch the game at the same time.  I finally gave up and deleted what I had written and watched the game.  I think it was the first PGA win for the winner.

Tom has left to get us a pizza for supper and we will bake it here.  He didn't say which one he would get, but we like Papa John's vegetarian pizza because it is loaded with veggies.

Now I'm watching the Weather Channel and I'm glad I don't live in the South right now.  Tornadoes.

Mary Ann

Marilyne

Patricia  - Thanks for reminding us of Purim, coming up later this month.  That will be followed by Passover, which usually falls somewhere near Easter?  Easter will be later than usual this year, I think toward the end of April?  Wednesday of this week, March 6, is Ash Wednesday.

Mary Ann -  I watched the Two Harbors Boat Launch cam, off and on today, but I didn't see much going on.  Late, at the end of the day, (Duluth time), I saw three men walking on the ice toward the boat launch,  pulling what looked like  large sleds, filled with fishing poles and other items.  They pulled them onshore, and loaded everything into pick-up trucks.  I'm thinking that they must have left the fish cabins, "shanties", out on the lake somewhere?? There were none in sight, and I didn't see any on any of the other cams either.

For those who perhaps arent aware...there has been no posting in over a week from June Drabek, re, Soda Shoppe, ( which is unusual for her. ) My fears are that she is in hospital, I would hate to think, anything worse...

larryhanna

Hi Everyone.  We are to have a cloudy and much cooler day today with it staying the mid-50's although the sky is currently clear and we have  sun at the moment.  We had a lot of rain yesterday and in the late afternoon we and other areas around us were in a tornado warning areas.  We were ok but the area just North of us had two people hurt and trees down and property damage.  Just checking in this morning.  I took a shower this morning and it left me pretty exhausted, which isn't saying much.  I will just take things easy once again today, which seems to have become my way of life.

Joy

Good morning.  Just marking my place right now.

Larry, glad to see you, but sorry that you still are so tired.  I hope that today will be a better day for you,

I, too, have been missing June.  However, I know her daughter-in-law has posted here in the past when there is some news about June.  So, I would think that she is aware that we all will be worrying about her.  Maybe she is just having problems with her computer.  Let's hope that is the reason.

We did not have as much snow that we were supposed to get.  It wound up as a lot of rain.  Our schools all were just on a 2 hr. delay and the roads seem to be ok.

The sun is shining and the snow on the trees looks so pretty.  But, still very cold.

I hope everyone will have a good day and get to do something exciting. LOL

Larry, I'm glad to see you check in and I'm glad your area was not hit by the bad weather of yesterday.  When I looked at the Weather Channel, I saw where Augusta and North Augusta were in the possible tornado zone.

I did not get up until 8:45 this morning and the temperature was 10 degrees.  At 10:15 it is now 11 degrees.  I won't say March came in like a lamb, but things were quiet, so I wonder what the end of the month will bring.

I'll be back when there are more posts and when I am more awake than I am now!

I notice June hasn't posted in SS for a few days.  She did at one time post here, but that was some time ago.  Maybe we'll know more when we read in the SS.

Mary Ann

Everything is quiet here today.  It is cold here in NorthWestern Florida.  The temps are finally up to 46 degrees and overcast.

I had my routine blood work done this morning and Wednesday going for a bone density test.  I use to get them every two years but this is my first one since we moved here in Mar. 2016.  I have osteopenia and hope it hasn't gotten too much worse.  Tomorrow our furnace guy coming to make a routine check and then a doctor's visit on Thurs.  This will be a busy week for me.

My iPad tells me that I have been spending less time on it.  I've tried cutting down my time and have been successful with the help of some good mystery books from the library.  The paper print is much easier on my eyes than the computer even 'tho I dim the light on it.

Hope everyone has a good day.

I hope that Bubble and Don will make contact this week. It is the time when in the past few years he was ready to fly out to Israel. I a sure she now has her computer fixed so tat they can get on to talk. How fast the years go.

Good morning all: Not a very busy day here in S&F, although there are quite a few messages here in B&T, compared to other folders.  Good to see Larry this morning.  Sorry he is having a slow recovery, but he's taking good care of himself!

Jean - I've never had a bone density test. I made up my mind many years ago, not to have the test, because I was never going to take the pills or injections for osteoporosis.  Too many serious side effects, and I'm one of the unlucky ones, who always seems to get bad reactions to medications.  I'm sure I probably have osteoporosis, due to the fact that I'm small boned and have all the other physical characteristics that are common for developing it.  I do take calcium and Vitamin D (recommended by my doc).  Someday I will probably fall and break something, which I think is inevitable if we live long enough!

Mary Ann - One thing I've noticed, as far as messages here and throughout S&F are concerned.  Messages posted in the late evening from the West Coast, which would also include Alaska, are rarely ever read or acknowledged. If I post something at 8:00 or 9:00 pm here, everyone in the East or Midwest, is in bed or not on the computer.  Then in the morning, they arrive three hours before
I do, and start the day with fresh postings. . . so I usually wait until after Larry has posted, before I leave a message, which is still very early here.

I think Patricia, June, wjoan, and I are the only members who live in the West?  June never posts in the evening, and Joan no longer posts here in S&F, so not much conversation going on at all in S&F at night.  Which reminds me, I hope that June is okay, and is just having computer problems.

I had posted just before you Marilyne. However, with the newest system revision, it isn't always easy to see where someone has just posted before you. If you don't notice and don't follow past what appears to be your posted message to the announcement below that to writ, someone else has just posted, and you may want to review...you find a surprise and no post!

I agree with your post. There is a narrow window alloted to be included in the narrative.

All I said was the weather, cat and I are the same. Plus tomorrow morning early is Farrah's vet visit with a shout out to Larry. I did list the next three months of holidays plus we have both Russian and Greek Orthodox, plus Asian and East Indian. As well as Jewish, Christian, and Muslim locally so there are a lot of holidays in the next three months.

I just turned on the Weather Channel and noticed Auburn AL was included in some of the tornado coverage but I couldn't tell if a tornado actually went through Auburn.  SueSCF where are you?  Let us know that you're OK.

When I got up this morning, our temperature was 10 degrees and later went up to 11 degrees and at nearly 2:30 pm is again at 10 degrees.  Tonight it should be 9 degrees and tomorrow should be all the way up to 16 degrees.  Another heat wave!.  At 2:45 pm it fluctuates between 10 and 11!

As far as posts from the west coast are concerned, I go to bed around 10 pm ET and I always check here before I go to bed.  I tell myself at 10 pm here, it is 7 pm in California and 6 pm in Alaska.  So Marilyn might be cleaning up after supper and Patricia might be eating her supper.  I do check in occasionally during the evening and there is often nothing posted.  Other people watch TV but I find little of interest to watch after Wheel and Jeopardy.  If Antiques Roadshow is live, I'll watch that, but I don't like the reruns.   And that is only on Mondays.  I do puzzles, but get tired of them too.  I do read news on the computer, but I'm picky as to the news.  I'm not politically inclined, however, I do have my opinions.  So I'd say I'm my own worst enemy.  I do have golf to watch from Thursday through Sunday and it was exciting yesterday.

After I finish S&F, I think it will be time for a nap.

Mary Ann

Vanilla-Jackie

I notice June Drabek is in the forum or her name is being used.

Marilyne

Patricia - I think I did respond to your message last night, about the upcoming Jewish and Christian holidays?  Like you said, when you click on unread posts, it doesn't always take you to the last message you read, in any folder.  Sometimes it does, which makes it all the more confusing?  I don't know if wjoan is one of the casualties of the recent upgrade, or not?  I see her posting messages in Facebook, so I know she is back to normal again after her fall.  One of the regulars in Leisure Activities stopped posting after the last upgrade. Also a few others from folders where I read, but don't write.

Mary Ann - I think about you whenever we watch Jeopardy, which isn't as often as in years gone by.  Now we are hooked on the early evening home shows on HGTV, such as Mountain Life, and Log Cabin Living. I used to watch a lot of news shows, but not anymore. I just don't enjoy the constant politics and political infighting, or the depressing news about deaths from shootings, plane, train and bus accidents, missing children, or wives, (later found murdered.) Those stories are just so sad, and make me feel so hopeless about the future.
Starting around 8:00 PM, we usually watch a movie, or an ongoing series show, or a hockey game.

Joy

I hope this  will work.    I had made a comment on the Duluth  web cam page about  my  seeing that Air Boat going out on the lake,.   One of the moderators for  that site wrote back and asked if he could post my message on the   comment  page along with a   recording of what had taken  place and  I  told him it was ok.   This is what I   received back  from him.
