Marilyne,  I had said this morning that I would try to get back today, again.   I  was so slow getting moving and before I knew it,  it was after noon.  I play cards on Thursday evening and I usually wait until in the later afternoon to eat something before I go down to play.   Then I get something when I come back up.  Tonight we finished a little early.  I had some leftover tomato soup that I had planned to heat up.  I got it all heated and went to sit it on my walker to take into the other room, and it slipped out of my hand.  I was just barely able to catch it, but it spilt all down the wall and onto the floor.  What a mess.  I  wiped up most of it and went to eat before the soup got cold.  Then had to go back and finish cleaning the mess up.  I will push the wet mop over the floor in the morning.  Got the worst of it up.  It is getting so I have a hard time holding onto things.  Very frustrating.

So, that was my little exciting episode for today.  Plus, my partner and I did not win at cards, again.  Although, it was a close game..  we only lost by  5 points.  A lot better than on Tuesday night when we wound up 1,000 points in the hole.   It really gets to be so funny.  We just can't seem to win.  The other 2 players just seem to get all the good cards and they play right into each other's hand. We just have to laugh about it.  And, it sure isn't because the cards aren't shuffled.  We use 6 decks of cards and they  are put into the electric sharpener twice for each hand we play.  Just how the cards fall.

Bedtime is coming along, so I will say GOod Night to all.

Hi Everyone. This is going to be a cloudy but warm 68 degrees with a small chance of later day rain.  Our housekeeper just arrived so we will have a nice clean house in a few hours. Also the yard maintenance people are here this morning so it is going to be a noisy morning in the neighborhood.   Scott is going to go by Walmart later this morning and pick up Pat's online grocery order and also pick up some prescriptions for her.  He will then be here for a few minutes.  This was a morning for my shower and that has really used up a lot of today's limited energy.  Interesting postings since I posted yesterday but only going to check in again this morning.

Mary Ann

Joy, it's too bad you don't have a dog to clean up your tomato soup mess.  And I'm sure it was a mess!

Larry, moving to North Augusta was one of the wisest decisions you made because now Scott is more available to help you.  Since the death of his wife, I'll bet he's glad to have you near too.

Tom and I were talking yesterday that with our arrangement, I gave him a home and his being here allows me to stay in my own home.  We both are saving each other money too.

Sandy, when I looked at the Two Harbors Boat Launch, there were eight pickups already parked and it wasn't quite 9 am their time.  One man came in hauling a sled and I watched as he dismantled the sled and put everything in the truck before he drove away.  I know they're used to the cold and dress warmly.  Besides, they get that fresh fish to eat.  Of course, they have to clean it too.

Tom left for Bible study early and I see he took my trash out with him.  Today is also recycle day and ours is out.  Tom will be subbing today at a Middle School.  He finds those kids are more respectful than older kids who are more mouthy!

I got up close to 9 am and that puts me a bit behind on my computer browsing; it's just after 10:15 now and Kendrick has walked by for some attention.

Mary Ann

Marilyne

Joy!  Oh dear, I read your message last night about spilling the tomato soup, and I felt so bad for you!  I can relate, as my arthritis is so bad in my hands and fingers, that I can't get a nice secure hold on anything.  Everything just slips through my fingers, and falls to the floor and makes a mess.  I don't know how I would have managed to clean up the tomato soup, as it's difficult to bend over to pick up anything, much less do a decent cleaning.  Somehow, we manage to get those things accomplished, even though it's hard.

Mary Ann - I've been checking on Two Harbors Boat Launch, a lot since Sunday, but I have yet to see any ice shanties?  When I look, there are always a bunch of pick-up trucks, and usually the men are preparing to pull the equipment sleds out on the ice, or they're getting ready to pack up and leave.  It does seem to take a long time for them to do either one. I wouldn't have the patience, but I know that it's worth the effort to dedicated fishermen!

Well, it's only 7:45 here now, so I'm getting an early start on the day.  AJ is still asleep, and I'm already on my second cup of coffee.  Looks like it's going to be a long day, so I think I'll plan to visit a local market here, that has a nice bakery and deli, and get some goodies for the weekend.

FlaJean

Today is sunny and already 65F.  Our weather seems similar to Larry's in South Carolina.  Supposed to reach 70 degrees today!  My lab results were normal and my bone density was about the same.  I have osteopenia but it hasn't gotten any worse.

The dogwoods are blooming and look so pretty.  Everywhere there are an abundance of blooming azaleas.  Our azaleas are dwarf red azaleas, but mostly the ones we see are large and a beautiful lavender color.

A flock of large grackles have been in for a couple of days and they ate the mealworms we put out for the bluebirds.  So my husband put some more out and right away a couple of bluebirds flew in for a meal.  I sure hope the bluebirds make nests in the houses again this year.

Joy, hope you got your spill cleaned up without hurting your back.  Something like that happens so fast it is hard to prepare for it.

Hope everyone has a good day!

Good morning from the Interior where there is no news as yet at 7:48 AM. Farrah is becoming actively vocal and is obviously feeling better. She didn't lose any weight, still at 15 pounds, with just the initial .5 pound loss. The vet says Farrah's still a bit chunky and would like to see her at the 10 to 12-pound range. I've reduced her food by half, taken away treats and she eats IAMS indoor diet food, so I'm not sure what else to do but wait.

Sandy, in high school, part of the curriculum was to show the class a video reenactment of the crime scene, and we had to take our clues from that. The next day we saw another video in the series explaining what actually happened with the real crime and punishment dealt.

A similar college curriculum was so much more graphic. It took it from the realm of supposition to a more raw reality. What I was enjoying was taking the facts and trying to make sense of what I saw and learned. What I saw in that college class was a more vivid less cerebral challenge. It brought actual violence into the mix, and I wasn't ready to deal with that.

I aree that I often prefer theories over messy reality.

Everyone's weather is so different than ours. Our highs and lows remain in the thirties and while the animals and birds are more visible and active, and our bodies sense a change, that feeling of something's begun; the physical picture remains the same, wet and humid.

Joy, I wonder if a Swiffer would help? I have the same problems with having to take my time getting down and more time having to figure out how to get back up again!

I hope everyone's having a good morning and a good day!

Jean,I envy you with the dogwoods.  When I moved here, there was one between the garage and condo building.  It would have yellow petals some years that turned kind of red (not pink).  That did not seem a good location for it and it slowly died and was cut down. We also don't have bluebirds here, but when I had a cottage, a neighbor would put up several bluebird houses so we did have some there.  I remember going on a tour trip through West Virginia in the Spring and seeing dogwoods in the woods away from the road.  So delicate and so pretty.

Marilyn, I think those dots near the lighthouse in the Boat Launch site are shanties.  They don't have to be very large, especially if there are only one or two people using them.  I noticed the man putting his gear in the truck had an augur to drill through the ice.  I think either a person is a fisherman or not a fisherman and if they like to fish, they'll fish in any kind of weather.

Patricia, Farrah didn't gain her weight in a few days so she will not lose it in a few days.  She'll get down to your desired weight one of these days.  kendrick weights 15.6 pounds but I have an idea he's much larger than Farrah.  Wouldn't it be fun to see them together?

In my Random Image next to where I am posting is a picture of Sun.  I wonder how she is doing or if she is still alive.  She was from Texas.

We have a lovely sunshiny day started.  It will still be cold here, but the sunshine makes it a nice day!

I think the ice fishing shelters must be like tents  ice fishing tents  and can be folded up and put on the sleds to take in when the fishermen leave.

Did anyone see the two guys using a four-wheeler to go out on the ice?  I think there's a video on the "Home" link of Duluth web cams.  It's in fast- motion but I was able to watch the last part when they finally got onto the ice and whizzed away.  Never could see where they went - even on the Depot cam.

I timed a guy walking from parking lot to a spot just on the other side of the pier light.  Took him 10 minutes.

Callie, fishing shelters come in all sizes and shapes.  I posted a link to some shelters a while ago.  If they have enough money, some people have rather elaborate shelters and they take heaters with them.  Regardless of the types, the people dress warmly.  I haven't been in a shelter, but I've seen plenty of pictures.  Houghton Lake, which is in the center of Michigan's lower peninsula has a lot of shanties on it and they call it Shanty Town.  They even drive their vehicles onto the frozen lake and I think many years there are shanties that aren't taken off the ice in time and they sink.  I also think the owners are fined for not getting the shanties off the ice in time.

Here's a link to Houghton Lake.  Shanty Town is also named Tip=Up Town.  There are a lot of pictures, so don't feel  you have to look at all of them.  Near the top of the screen are headings of various events.

Mary Ann, Sun Knowles or Sunshine as she was usually called, was from Tyler, TX and passed away in September of 2017.  We used to email frequently, but she finally got where she had real difficulty using her hands and couldn't use the computer. She lived with her daughter and sun-inlaw. She had a very interesting life.

Mary Ann,  I keep hoping I'll see someone setting up or taking down the shelters but haven't yet managed to do so.
I like to click on the Depot cam because it shows the little dots where the tents are out on the lake.  Sometimes people can be seen moving around them - or going in and out.  Most of them disappear as the sun begins to set.

Today is gloomy but warmer.  We may hear thunder between midnight and 3:00 a.m.  Then tomorrow is supposed to be really nice and warm.  I'm more than ready!!!!!

Callie - Here is the link that Mary Ann sent me a few days ago, that shows the many different styles of ice shanties. Keep scrolling down, and you will see some of the fancy interiors of the shanties.  I saw lots with stoves for warmth, and even one with a TV!

MaryTX - Sorry to hear that Sun, is no longer with us. She was so nice and friendly, and had a great sense of humor.  Thanks for letting us know.

Mary Ann - Houghton Lake, looks like year-around fun!  I guess that most smaller lakes freeze solid like that?  The pictures of the trucks out on the lake, look scary to me, but apparently it's safe.

I Just went to Preview, and only the first couple of sentences are showing . . .  just like you mentioned the other day.  I always like to preview, and make corrections, but guess I'll have to do it from Quick Edit.

I too am saddened to hear that Sun passed away, I do remember her, and I liked her.

MaryTX, thanks for the information about Sun.  I knew her entire name and that she was from Tyler TX; I'd think of her when watching the Weather Channel when TX was having weather problems and they'd show Tyler.  I think she posted one last time telling us she could not post because of her hands.  The picture that shows up in my Random Image shows such a dignified lady!

Callie, I wish we could blow up the scenes on the lake to clearer show the shanties.  I think most are homemade, just large enough for the occupants. That is why I posted the site for Houghton Lake because they have a lot of shanties on the lake - Tip Up Town.  That really is quite a large lake, compared to most around here where people have cottages.  Marilyn, from the looks of the literature/site, there are lots of activities there all year.

As I've written, I've been working on my income taxes and this is something I've never paid attention to in previous years, but only $2,000 of my Social Security is not taxed!  I know my investments cause that and I am not a large investor, so I am sure bigger investors are taxed more than I am, maybe for more than they receive.  As long as I have enough to live on, I won't complain; the amount just surprised me.

Good evening.  I am just getting here today.  Just has been a very lazy.  We have been having a real fine snow all afternoon.  And, it is so cold and dreary looking out.  I haven't even looked out of the window to see if it is laying.  Our weather man said it wouldn't amount to very much and just lay on the ground.  Tomorrow it is supposed to be close to 60 º.  And, then rain on Sunday.

I, too, was sorry to hear about the passing of Sun.  She always seemed to be a very nice lady and always wrote a nice message.

Marilyne, Patricia, Mary Ann, Jean,  I have a nice scrubber that I bought from QVC a couple years ago.  I guess you might say it is electric. Doesn't use batteries, but I have to plug it in to recharge it.  It is very lightweight and has 3 different kinds of scrubbing pads that fit onto it.  It does a great job.  I can also shorten the handle to be able to do my shower walls with it.  I really love it and it does a great job.  I can't get down at all,  so I take my picker-upper tool and bunch up a pile of paper towels and can pick up the majority of what I have spilt.  Works great !  Once I got the little globs of the soup up, it wasn't hard to mop the rest that remained.  I did have to wipe the lower part of the wall behind where it spilt.  Not too bad.  I was fortunate that it wasn't that bad.  Luckily, I was able to save about half of it, so with a sandwich it was enough for my supper. I also had just gotten a grocery order and had some little individual pies that was my dessert.

And, yes, MaryAnn, it would have been nice to have a dog to scoop up the mess.

I hope that I will remember to watch the Two Harbors boat launching site tomorrow morning.  It was between 8 and 9 Central time.  I hope I get to see the guys with the air boat again.  I didn't get to see the ones that went out on the four-wheeler.  I can only say that those guys must be really die-hard fisherman to be able to stay out in that cold as long as they do.  And, I am sure a lot of the ones that are regulars have everything set up so that they are very comfortable.  More power to them !!!!

I hope everyone will have a great rest of the evening and a restful night of sleep.

Hi Everyone.  We are to have a cloudy day but it is suppose to get up to 78 this afternoon.  I plan on a nice quiet day today and will watch a lot of basketball this afternoon and this evening.  Not feeling very peppy this morning and trying to get up the energy and appetite to eat my breakfast.  I may try to start filling out our income tax this morning as have the data all together.

I am not up to trying to post a response to all of the posting but have read them all since I posted yesterday and will try to offer a few comments this morning.

Mary Ann, I agree with you on the wisdom of moving here when we did as are son is picking up a lot of the duties I or Pat used to do with ease. Yesterday he went to Walmart for Pat and picked up the online grocery order and then went to the pharmacy and got prescriptions for her.  When he got back here he unloaded the groceries and helped Pat get them put away.  You did a wise thing in letting Tom come live with you. Eighty-five percent of Pat's Social Security is taxed as regular income.

Marilyne, in the North they have clothes designed for the cold weather like flannel lined jeans.  If when you go to Preview and see only a couple of lines of your post go to the lower right hand corner of the posting box with the little triangle and hold down the mouse and it will expand as you draw it down.

Jean, among my other ailments I also was diagnosed with osteopenia a number of years ago and have been taking calcium with Vit D for years.  I have no idea whether that has helped or not as don't intend to have another bone density test.

Mary, thanks for telling us about Sun.  Like others I always enjoyed her postings.

Joy

Good morning.  Nice to see your message, Larry.  Sounds like you are feeling a little better.  Glad that Scott was able to give you some help yesterday.. I  know you appreciate everything that he does for both you and Pat.  And, I am sure he is happy that he can help out a little.

It is very slow here this morning.  Your message is the only since I wrote the last message yesterday.

It is a cold, dreary, cloudy morning here and I am still cold.  I just can't seem to get warm.

I have to write a couple checks this morning and want to get them out in today's mail, so I better get a move on.

Nothing exciting has happened so far this  morning, so I will check back later.  I did look at the Two Harbors web cam and did not see anything that looked like the same guys I saw last Sat. morning.  There were some of the fishing shacks  closer to the parking lot and you could make them out better.  Some die-hard fishing fans !!

I hope everyone will have a good day.  Stay warm and don't forget to "spring forward" tonight.

I just looked at the Two Harbors Boat Launch and saw two men by what looked like a riding mower with a sled behind it.  After some preparation, one man sat at the back of the mower and the other on the seat and they took off.  They rode out to the light house and by that time they were a speck on the ice.  I really could not make out anything after that.  I am sure the ice is quite thick, maybe 4 to 6 inches thick and that should hold most anything.  Keep looking, Joy, you may see the air boat again (I keep wanting to call it an "airbus"!).

Larry, you outdid yourself today.  I am sure Scott is happy to be able to help you now that you live nearer to him.  How is he coming with his trying to get another job?

I can see the sun is trying to shine and radar shows the next storm is a day or two away.  We're supposed to get part of Taylor, the next named storm.

Tom just came upstairs and I told him about seeing the riding mower go out on Lake Superior.  It takes all kinds.  He will pick up the groceries after he has his breakfast at Mc D's.

Now I'll see what the rest of S&F is up to.

Good morning all:

Joy - It does seem like a lot more morning activity in Soda Shoppe than here, but the members there get a very early start on the day! :o  If I look there when I get up around 7:00, there are a number of posts from SS that say 2:30 or 3:00, on my West Coast time, but of course would be 5:30 to 6:00 in the East.  That still seems very early to me. Often nothing in B&T, but it becomes busier here during mid=morning, into late afternoon.  Nothing in either folder in the evening, unless Patricia or I post a message here in the West.  I miss wjoan, and wish she hadn't dropped out.  She used to respond to most messages.

Mary Ann - I missed the man on the riding mower!  I looked, but no sign of him, so will keep checking in case he returns.

FlaJean

A little overcast here but supposed to get a high of 72.  Good to see a longer post from Larry this morning.  So good that you moved close to your son while you had the strength to do so, Larry.  My husband mentioned the other day that he was glad our daughter nudged us to move near her and that we listened.  He isn't sure he could have gone through the move if we had waited.

Mary Ann, Tom will probably be bringing you something good when he gets back from McD's.

I need to get busy and get a few things done this morning.  Joy, thanks for the reminder about the time change.  Our state voted to go to daylight savings year round but we need to get approval from Congress...we may be waiting a long time for that. 😊

angelface555

Good morning from a warm and bright Interior morning!

Larry, it's good to see a longer post from you. I agree that Scott has been very helpful and it certainly is nice to have him around as well as Jean's daughter and Tom, MaryAnn's nephew!

I agree with Marilyn, many posts I look at have a time stamp of two to three in the morning my time. I can only imagine how Jackie, Bubble, and Sato feel when they are up and about and everyone else is sleeping!

Social Security is a tax when we are working and it is taxed when we receive it. I'm told that unemployment is another one that is double taxed. That is actually illegal, double taxation, but they've found a way around that.

Nothing on my agenda today accept to redo a couple of assignments and try to get them approved. I'm in an anxious mood this morning.

Vanilla-Jackie

Quoting Patricia : " I agree with Marilyn, many posts I look at have a time stamp of two to three in the morning my time. I can only imagine how Jackie, Bubble, and Sato feel when they are up and about and everyone else is sleeping!"

Lonely... ;D

Back in the time of Senior Net, there were members posting all night long. Lots of them were from other countries, like UK, Aus, NZ, and South Africa, but many were here in the US and Canada.  If I were having a wakeful night, I would check into SN, and there were always people talking back and forth.  Not in the chat room, but on the message board. I'm sure the chat room was busy too, but I didn't go there.  We were all much younger then, and there were a lot more of us!

I have an appointment this afternoon to get my hair cut, but other than that, nothing of interest happening this weekend.  Still raining, but not a heavy rain - just steady. Cold daytime temps for this time of year. It's 49 degrees right now on my outside thermometer . . . usually in the low 60's in early March.

This is what I don't understand about some of the postings - I rarely post after 10 pm ET.  That is 9 pm in Illinois, 8 pm in Texas, 7 pm in California and 6 pm in Alaska.  I can understand why there may be no posts at the time I go to bed because those west of me may have other activities and necessities to take care of.  But there are roughly 10 hours between my 10 pm post and 8 am (sometimes) posts and there usually are no posts in that time.  If Larry and Joy are up, they may post, but they both are in the same time zone as I am.   There were more folders in SN and we were all younger then.  We've lost a lot of people in the past few years.

Jean, Tom didn't bring anything from Mc D's, but he did bring the groceries in.  We have food to eat for a few days.

I must remember to reset my bedroom clock.  Dot told me she had set two of them.  My computer will change itself and I'm think my TracFone will, but I don't use that phone like others use their smart phones.

I'm watching golf now and it will be on until 6 pm.  I don't have any special programs on either Saturday or Sunday nights so golf is a good fillin.  It won't be long before the ships start but I think the ice breakers will have to plow through the ice first.  It will be good to see some activity at the Soo!

Tom is fixing something delicious in the Instant Pot.  I think it's chicken, but it smells so good.

Mary Ann,   10:00 p.m. EST is 9:00 p.m. CST (Texas and Oklahoma). Of course, that will change tonight.    :)

About the time you see fishermen where the light is at the end of the walkway, switch to the Depot web cam.  It will pick them up and you can watch how far out on the lake they go.

Same with coming in.  When they disappear off the left side of the Depot cam, the Boat Launch cam will show them coming in the rest of the way.

Earlier this afternoon,  a young couple came in having ridden bicycles most of the way on the lake.  They pedaled off down the road to the right of the cam picture.  There were no motors on the bikes.   I can't imagine!!!!!

Patricia, I really wasn't trying to "blame" anyone for the lack of posts, but there is a lot of distance between you and me and you would think at least one person would post from 10 pm to 8 am - someone who lives between us.  I enjoyed looking at your science posts of the stars.  I have a smattering of interest in them because my dad was interested in such things.  I remember when Echo and Sputnik and others went by; we'd lie on the grass in the backyard or at the cottage to watch them go by.  Our paper printed a schedule and we made sure we were available to look for them.

Callie, I do look at both the Depot and Boat Launch, maybe not the same way you do, but at least to get both views.  And if there is little snow on the ice, bicycles will work.  They might have parked their car off to the right, off the screen, and just used the bikes on the ice.

Tom fixed some delicious barbecued chicken for supper and I'm still wiping it off my face!

I have the most important clock changed - the one beside my bed.

MaryAnne, I wasn't looking at adding or not adding blame, only adding to your observations.

Interesting observations about "getting ahead."

'We are true to our creed when a little girl born into the bleakest poverty knows that she has the same chance to succeed as anybody else ...' Barack Obama, inaugural address, 2013

'We must create a level playing field for American companies and workers.' Donald Trump, inaugural address, 2017"

"Although widely held, the belief that merit rather than luck determines success or failure in the world is demonstrably false. This is not least because merit itself is, in large part, the result of luck. Talent and the capacity for determined effort sometimes called 'grit', depend a great deal on one's genetic endowments and upbringing."
