I'm so very sorry to learn about Shirley - but it wasn't unexpected.  She certainly Lived Life To The Fullest!!!

Bubble, I'm also sorry to learn about your theft. Great that the police got there so fast. Hope all the paperwork and trauma is settling down. Great that you're not alone.

Marilyne

So very sorry to hear the sad news about Shirley's passing.  She was a big part of Seniors & Friends over the years, and she will be missed by everyone.

R I P dear Shirley...i think you knew and had given us the warning via your last posting that your day was near when you mentioned Hospice, and that was the way you was posting your goodbye to us...I so enjoyed your reminiscence's on your time living in Marlow UK...You are already sadly missed.....

so_P_bubble

Good bye Shirley. You were a great person to know and you will be missed by all who met you in life or on line, especially here in S&F. I lit a candle for you, as we do here for relatives and friends. You certainly counted among them. Farewell.

Thanks Rammel for advising us

MarsGal

I will miss Shirley's posts. My heart sank when I saw the notice. What a sad start to the day.

Denver

I am just so sad and sorry to read of Our Shirley's passing. Even though we knew it would not be too long before we would read this news.....I think many of us were in denial😩 I certainly was😩 Shirley will be missed not only by her dear blood family but by OUR senior family also.  She was a beautiful lady that always made others feel important. Bless you SHIRLEY 🙏  Rest in peace next to your dear husband and life partner Cass.

Bob and I were able to meet Shirley and her oldest Son, Andy in  person at their camp site here in Colorado.  She loved to come to Colorado to camp and paint. She was quite the artist.  My heart aches for ALL of us as she will be sorely missed🙏

Thank you RAMMEL for sharing this sad news.

Denver

I watched Shirley's Funeral service this morning.  Still feeling such sadness that we will not have her participating here with us any longer.  She always had so much to add to the conversation.  It is interesting that many of our "friends" in this discussion are more important to us than some friend in our life.  I think in many cases we know MORE about the inner personalities of these friends.

SHIRLEY led a full life and she had a wonderful close family as well as friends.  This is extremely apparent as I watched her service today🙏 My heart is aching for ALL who feel her loss🙏

I just got the news this morning that a good high school friend passed away.  It is always sad to hear, but for whatever reason this news did not even closely affect me like the news about Shirley.  I think many of you will understand this😩

Thankfully, I was able to go back in yesterday for a RE-trim as my lady just did not take enough off last week.  Unfortunately, or maybe not, my lady was not in and another gal did a GREAT job and I liked her technique a LOT. Now, that might cause me an issue IF I would like to go to the new gal now.

I really need to get a good eye doctor as I am really having trouble reading the dash board on the car due to light issues and driving at night.  Seems the lighting effects me so much.

Two sons, ladies and two grands are going to see Taylor Swift in concert tonight.  Our San Francisco ones flew in this morning.  We will all get together tomorrow and I am SO EXCITED❣️ Our PGA son and family will just come for dinner as he has a big golf tournament and dinner at his club....

Enjoy the rest of your day and weekend.

Jenny, sounds like an enjoyable time for you today. Enjoy the day. I hear you about your eyes. Hope you can get in to see a good eye doctor soon.

Waaaah! My favorite Coast Guard cutter, Hollyhock has left Port Huron for good. She is on her way to her new assignment in HAWAII. I didn't think they were in need of an ice-cutter. Wonder if she will stop on the way to get the ice cutting apparatus removed, or if that was already done last year. She did not participate in ice operations this past winter, but then there wasn't much ice to cut last winter. Right now Morro Bay is parked at Port Huron, but unless they changed plans, Sequoia will be the next ship stationed at Port Huron.

I managed to get all but one thing done that was on my to do list yesterday, including getting my hair cut, finally. Another day of over 90o weather on the agenda for today. It was 72o when I got up this morning. Don't think I need to be outside today.

Marilyne

Cool and foggy this morning, with a temp of 58 degrees right now at 6:45.  Supposed to climb up close to 100 today and Tomorrow.  :buck2:

Jenny - Sounds like a busy Summer going on for you and Bob and your family.   The Taylor Swift concert will be fun!  Last time she was on tour, some of our kids and grands went to see her at a large outdoor venue here.  She puts on quite a show!
Have a good time today at your big family gathering.

MarsGal - Funny that the Ice-Cutter, Hollyhock, is "moving" to Hawaii.  I hope they follow up with more information, as I'm curious as to what her new job will be?   Sounds like you are accomplishing a lot this Summer, despite the heat?   How are the cats doing?

MarsGal

The cats are doing well. Thanks for asking. During all that extra air pollution due to the Canadian wildfires, I was the worst off for it with plugged ears, muffled hearing, and loss of taste. My smell might have gone too, but I really didn't notice other than I didn't smell the smoke like some people did. Shan was sneezing for several days. Oscar surprised me because he is the one with the sinus problems, but he wasn't any worse off than usual through the whole thing. Speaking of Oscar, he is so much better since he started on the same diet Shan is on. I get them the diet management version of the C/D kidney/urinary tract conditions food. By feeding them both the same thing (with the Vet's okay) Oscar as lost three pounds over the last year. He is livelier and more alert. He doesn't have any trouble getting up and down the stairs and his sinus problems have become minimal.

Hollyhock has made her way to Quebec. At the moment she is docked and in view of the live webcam. They did a change of command thing at Port Huron on May 26 and now have a new crew taking her to Hawaii. The old crew will remain at Port Heron and will take over duties on the Sequoia. Sequoia looks like Hollyhock and, in fact, is numbered 215, Hollyhock is 214. Sequoia was based in Guam. Both were built here at the Fincantieri Marinette Marine shipbuilding facility in Marianette, WI. I won't be surprised to see Hollyhock make a stop at San Diego. It is a little annoying to have that switch. They will have to remove the ice cutting equipment from Hollyhock and add it to ice cutting capabilities to Sequoia. Seems a waste of money and both ships are the same age. Wonder what they think they are gaining by making such a switch.

Marilyne

Electrical power out again. 😩

Tomereader1

Hope not for long! Good Luck!

Marilyne

Hey Tome:    The power was out about four hours this time, but when it came back on again, the AC didn't!   The buildup of heat was pretty intense by then, but fortunately, a cool breeze started blowing from the West, as soon as the sun went down.  That cooled the house down enough to sleep, with the windows open.  This morning AJ has been working on it,  and looks like it might be fixed??  It's gone on and off a couple of times.  We shall see? 🤔.

Tomereader1

Marilyne, glad you are up and running? well, walking!  If you have seen on the news, our Texas electricity grid is pretty "iffy" as evidenced by the freeze-up of a couple years ago. (Maynot have been that long, but keeping track of time is not always in my bailiwick.  Anyway, we are having 100+ degree days here in most all of Texas, West Texas worse, but we're bad enough.  My elec. provider has asked that we "conserve" energy on certain days during certain times.  Well, to me, an optimal time would not be from 2:00PM to 10:00PM, as the hours from 2:00 until about 8:00 seem to be the hottest times.  I am cringing everytime we have one of those little "blurbs" when the power goes off, and comes right back on.  Keep thinking, oh, here we go, it might not come back on. But, I have been doing my part, and running the A/C on 84 degrees, using a stand-fan pointed at my sofa to keep me cool enough; doing the laundry (such as it is) after 10:pm, likewise with the dishwasher. For sleeping, I maintain that 84 degrees, as I have a ceiling fan right above the bed.  I can't really sleep under the A/C anyway and the fan dries out my nose and mouth.  I persevere! Keep us posted.  Sounds like AJ is doing OK, how's the rest of your family?  And you, of course.  Hugs and wishing cool air in your direction!

Denver

The Taylor Swift Concert was enjoyed by all. They said they were very glad they went and had a wonderful time.  The time spent together on Saturday was wonderful. Mama is always happy happy when she has her boys together.  Our San Francisco Family made it home safe and sound.

MARILYN, I do not like to hear about your power outages...especially now as I read about your A/C going out too. A power cut like that can cause issues with a lot of appliances too. Do hope AJ was able to get it up and running.  We have been in the 90's and are thankful for our A/C.

TOME, they ask us to conserve also but as you say it is in the hottest time of the day and we just do not feel it is worth letting the power company have control of our home for the little bit of savings they offer to do so. We do as you say you do but running the air at a higher degree and use fans.  We open up most nights as that is possible here in Colorado.  It may be at 10PM.  A cousin of mine recently moved from Denver to El Paso....I think she has been very close to melting‼️‼️

Happy to read your kitties are doing well MARSGAL.

Time to get some dinner started.... Have a good night.

Tome - The electrical grid in California is overburdened with the millions of people moving here, and the high rise construction being built to accommodate the newcomers.  In spite of the obvious, our CA Gov,  has put us on notice, that no more natural gas appliances will be installed or even sold in this state.  We will be ALL electric!  Eventually, this will include cars, buses, trucks, etc.  They better start working on the grid, before all of this takes place!

We also are also being asked to conserve electricity, by not using it during peak hours . . . 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM.  The rates skyrocket during those hours, so I don't turn the dishwasher on until 9:00 or later.  I keep the AC at 78 to 80, depending on the outside temps.  We are fortunate here, in that we cool down at night, and early morning, so rarely turn the  AC on until afternoon.

Jenny - I think our night temperatures are similar?  Yours drops because of high elevation, and ours drops because of proximity to the ocean.  As you know, San Francisco stays mostly in the 60's, day and night , throughout the Summer months, but it isn't like that here.  We're in the South Bay, so we get HOT!   The Bay Area has lots of different "micro-climates".

Glad your family enjoyed the Taylor Swift concert.  She will be doing her show here in the San Jose area this coming weekend, at the massive Levi Stadium.  I don't know where they set up the stage in a large venue like that?  I guess that's why they have those large screen videos placed around the perimeter?    I know that two of our grandkids are going to attend with their "SO's",  but not sure of all the others?

Denver

Good morning .

MARILYN, I know you can get HOT in your area.....SF is unbelievable how the temperature vary so little.  Seems most of the time when I FaceTime with my son he has a light long sleeve shirt on‼️ When I am there I quite often wear a warmer blouse with sleeves and get under a blanket when just sitting around‼️ One of the hottest days I have ever experienced was at SFO walking to the gate for our plane YEARS ago.  People were passing out it was so hot.  The coldest was in Walnut Creek on a Fourth of July......we nearly froze to death🤷 I spent several HOT 4ths in Walnut Creek too!  Hope your family enjoys Taylor too.

We had HORRIBLE thunderstorms starting at 5AM.... and again around 8.  VERY loud and VERY close 😩

I watched a bit of The Weather Channel's predictions of what we can expect for the rest of the summer and fall and it is not good.  Too much heat and storms. [ My heart aches for the poor people getting flooded out as well as the extreme heat.  The Pfizer Pharmaceutical plant hit by a tornado might effect many of us😩

No big plans for the day.  It is to be a bit cooler, so I will get out and clean up my flowers and let Smokey Cat have some out door time.  He loves it and stays right by me.

Enjoy your day ‼️

Good Morning,

Jenny, your storms are headed for Oklahoma but local gurus say they "might" wear themselves out before getting to the OKC area.  I hope so!  We've had enough middle-of-the-night flashing boomers!

A friend of sons posted on Facebook that it had been 85º in Leadville CO (10,200 feet above sea level!!!!) where we used to live.  Wonder what the "felt like" temperature was?

So far, she said with fingers crossed, our local electric company has kept power outages to a minimum - unlike the OKC company that may have thousands.  One neighborhood was totally blocked from going in and out because of downed power poles across the streets.  Took a couple of days to get everything fixed.  And "feel like" temperatures have been quite a bit above 100º because of the humidity.

My "pot garden" looks pitiful - even though I use the sprinkler that has heads in each pot often.

It's been a busy week and Domestic Duties need my attention.

Enjoy your day, Everyfriend - and Stay Cool!

Marilyne

Power is out again!  No estimate of when it will return or why.

Marilyne

The power came back on last night after about five hours.  Again, the AC didn't come on, and is still off.  :(   Our Utility company sent a text, saying that it was an "equipment failure" in our area.  Then later it was changed to something more detailed.  All I know is that it was in the high 90's yesterday, and supposed to hit 100 today and tomorrow, and we have no AC. :P

Trying not to complain, knowing that others in the country are suffering far worse, with tornadoes, floods, serious lightning and thunder storms.    Watching the Weather Channel, is frightening, and makes me realize how lucky we are here - in comparison.

Jenny - Don't you wish you were in bland and chilly San Francisco right now?  Temps in the 60's all week long, but supposed to go up into the 70's over the weekend, while we're baking in 100 degrees.  :o    The  puzzling part, is that we're only 30+ miles S/W of SF.  The City stands alone in it's cool dampness,  while the rest of the Bay Area bakes!!

Callie - I'm thinking about Dr. Emily's upcoming wedding!  I'll be keeping positive thoughts and hoping that all the crazy weather calms down for the occasion?

Time to get some things done around here before the heat ramps up and the possibility of another power outage returns this afternoon.

Tomereader1

My next door neighbor called me about 5:00 asking me about my A/C; theirs went out, and he had an outrageous quote from a local company.  They do have individual window A/C's in each bedroom, so that helps. He was also complaining about his high electricity bill.  LOL, wonder why!

RAMMEL

If more than one of their window A/Cs went out I would guess they overloaded their circuit(s) and tripped a breaker, or the area is having a brown out due to heave usage - and they just  can't keep up with the power load.

Talking of high energy bills...our UK's gas and electricity energy prices have litteraly quadrupled since the war in Russia - Ukraine..Last winter and summer hitting the 100's many struggled with paying our now extortionate bills..even with some government help...they still remain four-fold sky high..

Denver

Good morning‼️

Things look bright and fresh after ANOTHER big rain again. Thankfully it did not include hail at our house but the hard rain took a toll once again on my plants.  These recent storms sure have been detrimental to trees and plants.  The peaches, corn and melons that are famous in our state have been delayed or totally ruined😩😩

Day before yesterday a EF1 tornado hit PIKES PEAK and took down many trees‼️ AND they say tornados do not come this close to the mountains🤷♀️

I was sad to hear of Tony Bennett's passing.  He was one of the greatest singers ever and will always be remembered 🙏 Thank you for sharing the video, Amy. I listened to him sing most of his songs all day yesterday.  I listen to him at least once a week as 'I have always loved him.

MARILYN, feeling sad for you and AJ with the lack of air conditioning.  The power surges are very hard on our electrical equipment.  DARN‼️ AND YES, I do wish I were in S.F. now with all these high temperatures ‼️

JACKIE, seems prices have nearly tripled on EVERYTHING including utilities most everywhere.  It is very serious for those like you that have scrimped to get by and then this inflation hits.  Government never seems to come to the rescue soon enough😩

CALLIE, a friend of mine from high school years posted a video of her grandson in his plant garden business. It was sad seeing all the damage he has from the day after day record breaking temperatures.  As he said, "too much water and high temps take their toll" 😩 Many around here claim they have not had to water anything in their yard yet this summer.

Have a good weekend

Marilyne

Good Morning everyone!  The heat wave has ended, and supposed to only be in the mid 80's today.  I can deal with temperatures like that, so hope to get a few things done today in the yard .. .  mostly easy stuff, like hand watering the cymbidiums and a few other potted plants, and cleaning out the birdbath.

Over the weekend, younger daughter Sandy, went to the movies with a friend and saw  Oppenheimer.   She felt that it definitely deserves all the hype that It's been getting!  She was blown away by the story and the actors.   They saw it at the I-Max Theater, in San Jose, which must be a spectacular place to see a movie.  I've never had the pleasure, but would love to go there and see what it's all about?

Those of us who can no longer go to a downtown theater, will have to wait for it to play on one of the streaming TV channels. I'll be looking forward to it.

Hello to Jenny, Jackie, Callie, Rick, MarsGal, Tomereader, Mary Page,  and everyone else who looks in.  Hope all is well, and that the heat dome has lifted in your part of the country, and also in Europe.   Hoping that we hear from you all soon.

MaryPage

We are feeling so blessed in the situation we have found ourselves in.  We have moderately high summertime type temperatures, none of the horrible storms we read & hear of others being afflicted with, the central air keeps us cool, and Chip keeps the provisions arriving.  I am not suffering from being here on the shores of the great Chesapeake Bay.  My pellucid marginal degeneration is the spoiler in all of this.  I find there are many little ways to cope with being profoundly deaf; but being blind to the world is a heartbreaker.  Then I think of the news of babies starving, and quickly die a million deaths for them and for their mothers, and count my blessings again.  Life is nothing if not unexpected.  Hoping you are all able to keep comfortable.

Tomereader1

And just an FYI, Marilyne.  The heat dome HAS NOT DEPARTED! It's just hanging over us making life miserable (and electric bills soar). The front porch which is mostly in the shade is registered 90 something closer to 100 and I don't have any idea what the humidity is.  (29%) Temp is 98, with "feels like" at 100.  Monday scheduled to be 107.

For some reason, earlier today, I developed a spurt of energy, and started doing some house cleaning.  Swept the kitchen & two bathrooms, vacuumed the living room and did some of those 1,000 little things that pop into your head when you are cleaning a certain area.  When all this was finished, I was totally pooped.  Tried for a nap, but couldn't, so been reading in the coolest spot in the L.R.  Decided I'd better check my emails before they got into the 1,000's, and have been drinking my iced tea, for supper, I opted for something cool (no cook) tuna on Ritz crackers.  Betcha my bedtime will come early.

BTW, as the British might say, "been watching the footie".  Late night with the FIFA World Cup.  Some I DVR'd and can watch the next day. Bad old me, got hooked on Soccer back when Men's World Cup was on (I can't even remember when that was??)  My daughter and I were talking on the phone when the first match started Wednesday night, and the team I was not rooting for scored an early goal, and I was yelling!  She laughs at her mom who loves sports!  I guess it will be Monday or Tuesday before another match comes along, but I'll be ready!

Dear ladies, please stay cool the best you can, healthy and safe, too.
Big Hugs to you all. (Same goes for any of the guys on here, Rammel et al).

Marilyne

Mary Page - thanks for posting such an upbeat and positive message.  You have a great attitude, in spite of having to cope with some of the debilitating problems that come with aging.  I'm glad you have a large loving family looking after you.  The sight  of the Chesapeake Bay must cheer you up every time you look outside!  Keep on, keeping on!

Joanne/Tome - Sounds like you're also making the best of the prolonged Heat Dome, that refuses to move!  I feel so sorry for the folks in Phoenix, AZ, who have had temps well over 100, every single day this July!   I don't think I could carry on and stay positive under those conditions.   Same situation here in the Palm Springs area of California.    Our temps here in the Silicon Valley/San Jose area have finally dropped into the 80's, but that pesky heat dome is expected to return next week!   Good that you get so much pleasure and relaxation from watching the various sports on TV.  Soccer is one that I know nothing about, and have never watched.  We have a new soccer stadium here in the San Jose area, so it may catch on?    Right now baseball, with the SF Giants and Oakland A's, is the only game in town.

Tomereader1

Well, I don't know too much about Soccer, but am gradually learning.  Still trying to figure out what constitutes an "offside".  The FoxSports network is doing a super job of showing how the line-ups work, i.e. 4-3-4; never realized that before.

The "only" sport I know zero, nothing, nil about is Cricket, and there is a suburb here that has changed one of their smaller arenas to a Cricket field.  The other sport was not doing well $$ wise.  Don't know if Cricket will catch on, but there are seemingly a lot of Britishers living around here, so maybe it will.  I have no interest in learning that sport.

Stay cool!  Hope you and AJ are both doing well, healthwise.

Joanne
