Mars, We're midway through January, so probably the coldest and worst time of the year for the Great Lakes?  In another couple of weeks the ships will slowly start reappearing. It's interesting to look at the various sites and links during the Winter storms if you can find any . . . but most camera's are not in operation  during the worst storms.

It's been cold here in California also, but nothing like what you folks in the East are experiencing!  Today it seems to be  little warmer, but a cold rain coming down to us from the Gulf of Alaska, is expected later today.    I have to get organized and make a trip to Safeway, for some food to get us through the weekend.

MaryPage

Our, or at least, My Seniors & Friends seems to be fairly screwed up insofar as dates of posts is concerned.  Hope whatever is causing this makes it go away soon!

As for Tangee lipstick, I sure do remember it!  I do not recall ever owning one, but they did seem to touch of a bit of magic, did they not?  I can remember the color they appeared to be, and then how pretty they were when applied.

Sandy

Speaking of singers now past and gone,
(I am) I never liked Elvis,  to look at ,
but oh could he sing .. IMHO,  he haD A wonderful
voice with such a range and so  much emotion...

Depending on the the song,  of course.
I particullarly liked,
"I'll hAVE A blue, Christmas with out  you"

Things should do nothing but IMPROVE from here on.  We're all pulling for you, Jenny!

Marilyne

Jenny,  hoping we hear from you again today, that you're feeling much better than yesterday.   Two days from now, on Wednesday, will mark one week, which will be a turning point in the right direction.   Let us know what your doctors are saying about the surgery and the recovery time?

Sandy,  so good to hear from you!  It had been a long time since you last posted, so glad you're doing okay, and starting to do your painting again.    Thank you for posting the Elvis video.  Join us in the "Just Plain Old Music" discussion in the Leisure Activities folder.   We would like to see/hear other music that you like, and still listen to.

Mary Page,  yes, that's a good description of the Tangee lipstick we all remember.   It's still available to buy, but only from the Vermont Country Store.  What used to be ten cents per tube, is now fifteen dollars!  Still, I couldn't resist, and bought some for Christmas for my two daughters and myself.    It still works just like it did back in the 1940's.  Takes me back to those carefree, happy years.  :)

MaryPage

We thought we had it bad with World War II.  Well, the loss of life, the family separations; these were terrible.  But you know, I remember everyone going out of their way with sunny smiles and happy greetings to everyone else in town, even complete strangers.  I remember decent language and decent behavior and caring hearts.  And yes, I remember some very old fogies who glared at us girls when we would come down the street from school, giggling and laughing out loud and having a good old girlie time.  They did not approve of much about us, albeit we were complete innocents.  Now, I no longer walk out, but I never have frowned at the girls.  However, I do find I deplore the language being used right out loud on television, and the lack of decent clothing and the sexual behavior.  Color me an Old Fogie!  ME!!!!

Another day over and done.  Each day I feel a bit stronger.

SANDY, I had  Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion on c 2-3 c 4-5  last Wednesday.

I recently fell and hurt my good shoulder, so the PT is for this shoulder right now, but this therapist will help for my recent neck surgery when given the OK for it.

Thank you for the wonderful encouraging words.

MARYPAGE, Count me in for the old fogies please‼️

Good Morning all!  The normal Winter weather here . . . cold drizzly rain, but not measurable beyond one-tenth of an inch.  Nothing like last year at this time, when we had the Pineapple Express storms, Bomb Cyclones, and constant power outages!   No two years are ever the same, but I prefer this bland weather at my age.

Jenny - Today marks one week since your surgery, so it will be a turning point for you?  From here on, hoping you will start healing and feeling better every day.  🙏🙏

Mary Page - Yes, I well remember the kindness and caring of friends, neighbors and strangers, during the WWII years.  People didn't protest on the streets and at the Capital back in those days.  People were united then, and now they no longer are.    Let us know how Chip is doing, since his recent health concern?  Also your granddaughter's husband . . . hoping he has recovered well from his emergency surgery?

Mars - I plan to post in Library/Television, later today about the new/latest movie version of "ALL Quiet on the Western Front".  We watched it over the weekend and it definitely deserved the Oscar nominations, IMO.

Joanne - I never did get the gloves at the Garden Center. Still waiting for the cold and damp to subside.  The indoor section of the building is open on all sides, so isn't pleasant to shop there unless it's reasonably warm, and no wind.   Hope you're enjoying the final surge of football games?  I think the recent horrible weather in the East,  interfered with your list of "Picks"?  (below)

Hello to Jackie, Sandy, Rick, and anyone else who posts here, or looks in!

Tomereader1

So, yes, Marilyne, I have totally enjoyed the final surge of football playoffs.  If I didn't say so before, I was totally embarassed for the Cowboys and their poor performance.  I just don't know what's to become of that team?  The wild weather up North certainly puts a large question mark to the BUffalo/Kansas City game, and possibly to Detroit/Tampa Bay (I think they are to play in Detroit).  So, I have two games Saturday and two on Sunday.  Since I have been in stir-crazy mode due to the frigid weather, four more games won't bother me a bit.  My daughter said last night she was going out today, if only to the grocery store. But, as the wind has not subsided a lot, the 41 degrees is still
staying in weather. She opted to stay in!  I'll bet the rest of the "bait & tacklers" don't understand my full-on obsession with football.  Football is something my Dad taught me all about, and I guess it's in my "acquired genes" to love the game!  It was funny in high school or junior high (I forget which) they had a class for only the girls, just before football season began, to teach "us" some of the finer points of football; rules, plays, etc.  I think I was the only one there who could answer any of the questions coach asked! One of the high points of my Senior Year was a Girl's Flag Football game.  I loved it. Don't think our side won, but it was a total riot! Well, I think I've about worn everyone out yapping about football.  BTW, my Dad taught me about baseball, took me to some of the Minor League games. And, I also inherited the "reading gene" from him. He would lie in bed at night and read, read, read.  Mostly the newspaper and magaznes like Life and Saturday Evening Post.

Marilyne

Good Sunday Morning everyone.  Hoping that all of our regular posters, will find their way back here to Bait and Tackle.
It took me a few days to adjust and accept the new Seniors and Friends, but here I am, and hope you will all eventually return as well?

I hope that Jenny, is doing well after her surgery?  It's been about 10 days, so maybe we'll hear from her today?

Joanne, I'm sure you took a look at the 49er/Packers game last night?  It was a close one, but the 9er's managed to pull it off at the last minute!

Mary Page, hoping you'll drop in to say hello, and update us on how everyone in your family is doing - especially Chip?

Mars - I saw in another folder, that you had found an apartment, and you sounded very happy with it?  How soon will you be moving, and hope you have someone to help you?

Jackie and Callie - I know you both feel like I do about the "new look". :(  Apparently it's a "done deal",  so hoping you will accept the inevitable, and join us again here in B&T.

Still raining here, and is very dark and gloomy.  It will continue through tomorrow, and then the sun will return.  :sun:

Marilyne...
...its the sign of our times, nothing stays the same forever...

MarsGal

Marilyne, very quick turn-around for the apartment, February 1. The lady who lived there unexpectedly had to go into  assisted living. I got very lucky by calling at just the right time to make sure I was still on the wait list for April and so got offered the apartment. Gahhhhh! That is a little over a week away, but she didn't see any openings coming up in April or May, so I grabbed it. I have barely anything packed and haven't pitched a whole lot out yet. So, this morning I sign up, this afternoon I need to find a moving company and make a few phone calls, tomorrow morning my grocery order comes, then I need to go gas up my car and take some stuff over to my sisters place. The cats are going to be in shock!

My sister likes the area; she lived near by these apartments years ago. Lots of shops, two major grocery stores, quick access to several pharmacies, a Sheetz gas station close by. My doctors and the vet are still easy to get to, even if it is a little longer drive for two of them.

The last snow has been hanging around, but it should melt off in the next day or so.. This morning it is 15o, only going to around 350. The rest of the week will likely be a bit rainy with the temps mostly in the 40s, except for Friday which they say will be up over 60o.

Reading is practically at a stand-still right now.

Marilyne

Mars - The new apartment sounds just right for you now!  Close to everything is important as you grow older.    How any rooms do you have, and what floor is it on?  Will you be closer to Sue, or about the same?  The cats will adjust once all the familiar furniture and beds are set up.  One week is short notice, but I guess you can take your time moving from your house.  Be sure to keep us posted on how things are going.

I'm not doing much reading either.  I need new glasses, but just don't have the energy (or whatever it takes?), to make the appointment, and then go through all the steps it takes before I  finally get the glasses.  I can see well to drive, and I do watch a lot of TV. Mostly I spend my time on the computer.   I think I mentioned in the Library discussion, that I watched the newest version of, All Quiet on the Western Front, on Netflix?  It was nominated for lots of Academy Awards last year, and definitely deserved to be.  Be sure to watch it, so you can compare with the earlier versions.  I hadn't seen either of the old movies, but plan to whenever they play on TCM or other vintage channels.

phyllis

I watched it,  Marilyne.  It was so interesting to see it portrayed from the other side. I  am so used to thinking of only  the American side since  my  father  was in the trenches during  that war.
It was a terrible time for everyone on  both sides.

I  agree  it well deserves the awards. Even though it was disturbing.

I've been riveted by Rachel Maddow's PREQUEL.  I tell you true, I thought I knew all about World War II, as I was born in 1929 and lived through every speck of it.
But I am here to tell you, I did not!  It is a WOW book, but even more so if you lived through it.

Denver

Good morning❣️

It takes me awhile to get through reading the posts but I sure enjoy reading them. My neck brace is very limiting as far as having my laptop in front of me and being able to type, so forgive me for not getting in here more often. It will improve for sure.

Overall I am doing very well.  My PT is very pleased with my hurt shoulder....she says moving it around tells her it is definitely going to be able to have it back in working order again and the torn rotator cuff WILL heal in time.  She has been also working on my bad shoulder and says she thinks this spine surgery may prove to give me a bit more movement in time.  She wants me to do as much as I possibly can to use my left arm to try to teach it to do more things.  I am doing my best but I am a righty all the way🤣🤣🤣.

Unfortunately, my surgeon does not want anything done for two months on my neck / spine so she is limited at what she can do with the overall exercises.

My postop appointment went great.  My surgeon showed us exactly what he had done and he was very proud of his work.  He was shocked at how much worse the area was and wondered how I was able to get by as long as I did.  We have already noticed a big change in how I walk.

I do not like taking the drugs, so used them only for a couple of days and have been getting most of my pain relief from icing and heating the area.

Thank you all for your continued support and caring words.

MARSGAL, I am so excited for you as you move on to this next phase of your life.  Everything you have said about the new place sounds very positive.  I proud of you and happy that you have made this decision.  I hope it will prove to be a good one.  I worry about the kitties.....this type of hangers can be so hard on them, but hopefully they will settle in and be happy one again.  How is Sue doing?

MARILYN, we are biting at the bit to get out to the Bay Area.  Our children have been traveling quite a bit, recently a trip to Japan and the another one to China.  They found a wonderful lady to watch the doodle and feel confidant he is well taken care of.  However....you know that is OUR job and we miss not being abl to do it❣️❣️❣️

Jenny, Sue is doing well although she is still not allowed to lift anything heavyish and has to still avoid bending and twisting. She went with me yesterday to check out the apartment layout and ask a few questions of her own. She has begun to think of moving into an apartment or into a condo in a year or two. The condo she had before she married, in fact, is just a few blocks from my apartment. She has fond memories of the place, and I think she may try to find one in that neighborhood. She is not ready for a move yet. Maybe in a year or two, she says.

Tomorrow I will start notifying the utilities, post office (from whom I must pick up the mailbox keys), etc. so everything is good to go on the 1st. Oh, and make an appointment with Comcast to hook me up. Of course there is still plenty of sorting and boxing to do. I have a mover in mind for the heavy stuff, but haven't called them yet. Doing that tomorrow too.

Marilyne

Jenny -  You're sounding much more upbeat and positive, so I hope that means that your recovery will move along quickly, and soon you'll be  ready to take that trip to San Francisco!   Glad your son and dil have found a Doodle Sitter that they trust!  Still,  I know it's your job, and you'll be happy to get back and take over once again.

Mars -  I guess you can take your time, moving from your house, and into the apartment?  That will make life much easier for you, without the pressure of getting out by a certain time.  Hoping Oscar and Shan will adjust quickly? My older daughter and granddaughter recent moved 200+ miles from a large two bedroom apartment, to a much smaller place that's only a few miles from us.  Their cat Lily, had no problems adjusting, and seems to be okay with the smaller space.  They are now up on the third floor, an she now spends most of the day, sitting on the window sill, and looking outside at the yard and pool, where the other residents congregate.

Callie -  Hope we hear from you soon, that everything is OK in OK?  (Sorry, couldn't resist.)  ::)  Keep us updated on Miss Ellen, and also the newlyweds?  Hoping your dil is still doing well?

Phyllis -  Nice to see you posting here.  Glad you liked "All Quiet", as much as I did.  With your Dad being there, in those awful trenches,  you had a special interest in the story I'm sure.  All of this year's Academy Award nominated movies are available on TV now!    Some are free, and some cost about $5:00 to view.  Not a bad price when you consider what they cost in a theater.
I notice that "Barbie", is free on Amazon Prime, so I plan to watch it today.  I also want to see "Killers of the Flower Moon" and "Oppenheimer".

Hello to Jackie and Mary Page and Rick and Joanne!  Also to anyone else who looks in on this discussion.

MaryPage

Back 'atcha, Marilyne.

Sandy, how are you doing, Dear One?  I worry when we go by without a peep from you.  Hugs from Mom, and if they would hurt too much, just a bunch of love.

MarsGal

Things are moving along. Got all my calls made except for Comcast. I am waiting until I get a moving date from the mover who is coming tomorrow morning to see what I have and give me an estimate. Meanwhile, I took two packages over to Sue, stopped at the library bookstore with three boxes of books, talked to my current mailman for a few minutes, packed a few things, and trashed some stuff. Which reminds me, I have to take the trash cans out to the curb. I've got a pile of stuff to take with me to the apartment next Thursday, and will stop at the post office to pick up my mailbox keys. My contractor was over yesterday to check out what I want his guys to haul off that I don't need or can't fit into the apartment. He has to get back to me on when his guys can be here. Tomorrow afternoon or Saturday, I plan on taking some stuff up to the Community Aid donation center.

CallieOK

Callie -  Hope we hear from you soon, that everything is OK in OK?  (Sorry, couldn't resist.)  ::)  Keep us updated on Miss Ellen, and also the newlyweds?  Hoping your dil is still doing well?

As far as I know, Miss Ellen, the newlyweds and dil are doing fine - and the rest of the family is, too.

OK is o.k.  ;D   except for the weather, which has been absolutely yucky for the past solid week! Rain/snow/freezing temperatures/dense fog have kept me house-bound - not even able to go out on patio and back yard.  (like the saying goes, "Yes, please. I'd like some cheese with my 'whine'.  ;) )

Sounds like the Bait and Tacklers are busy.

Marilyne

A positive comment on the movie  BARBIE!   I thought it was funny, uplifting, and even a bit nostalgic.

Those of us who had daughters or granddaughters during the early, middle and late years of the Barbie doll, will remember the many different incarnations, as she moved from her earliest look, into all her many careers, sports, holidays and parties.  Margot Robbie stars as Barbie, and looks just like her!  Helen Mirren, is the Narrator, and Ryan Gosling is a perfect Ken!  He has been nominated for the Best Actor award this year, and deserves it as far as I'm concerned.  He was hilarious!

Overall it's a a good movie, with a message.  Makes you feel good! It was free for me, because we have HBO.  You have to pay to see it on Amazon Prime - $5.99.  Well worth it IMO.

Marilyne

Moving right along here . . . even though we haven't heard from any of our regulars?    Barbie, is obviously a non-starter, so we'll move on to other movies and general talk.
I was planning to watch "Oppenheimer", last night, but the football playoff game took over, so that used up most of the TV viewing for the day and night.

The 49er's won, which is a good thing in my part of the country.  I'm not a football fan,  (like my friend Joanne),  but I always root for the home team, in any sport.  People here are so genuinely happy when the 9er's win, that you can't help feeling the love!

Jenny, we haven't heard from you in a while, so hoping that your surgery was  successful and that you're feeling better every day.  Sorry your Bronco's didn't make it into the playoffs. :(  Next year for sure!

Joanne, (Tome) - Are you pleased with the outcome of the games, or disappointed?  I'm sure you're looking forward to the Super Bowl, in a couple of weeks?

MarsGal, Looks like everything is going well for your move?  I admire you for making the decision, and then going ahead with it. Having to do everything yourself is difficult, but sounds like you're capable, and very well organized.  Keep us posted on how things are going this week?

Good morning also to Mary Page,  Callie,  Sandy,  Jackie, Phyllis, and all others who look in and read this discussion!  :hello:

Tomereader1

Marilyne, I had a serious case of "tired, dry eyes" from watching both games, from beginning to end. Was glad the Chiefs won, but was really hoping for the Underdog, Detroit Lions, to win over your Niners.  When that game was over, I said, aloud, "okay, Marilyne, there you go. Got your wish!"  The Superbowl game should be awesome! I don't think my eyes have recovered yet.  I usually just watch TV in small segments, like a one hour program, or part of a multi-episode series.  Of course, my eyes suffer from my other habit, reading.  I read more than I watch TV, both regular books and books on my KIndle Fire. I have adjusted the print on the Kindle to big enough where I could "almost" read the print without glasses. Ha, ha ha!
Hope you and AJ are doing well, staying warm, staying out of trouble! Onward and upward toward Super Bowl 58, I won't watch all the "hype" programs that start about 3 or 4 hours before the actual game.  Let me know when you finally get to watch Oppenheimer if it is worth 3 hours of my time? I'd really haved to divide that one up. In theatres, do they have an intermission?

MaryPage

CHIP CHOSE BARBEE. AND LAUGHED ALL THE WAY THROUGH IT.  IT REALLY WAS A HOOT, BUT NOT, IN MY ESTIMATION, WORTH A WHOLE MOVIE.  OH WELL, IT IS MY OPINION THAT ALL OF THE REALLY GREAT FILMS HAVE ALREADY BEEN MADE.

PLUS TASTES HAVE CHANGED.  DRAMATICALLY AND OTHERWISE.

MaryPage

Not a sports fan, when I heard the news that Baltimore was involved, I said a little prayer for them, for I love that town, and always have done.  I hear they lost.  So sad.

My daddy was a West Point grad, so I was raised declaring "Go
Army, Beat Navy!"  I still take the trouble to do so provided someone tells me it is that Big Day!

I, too, read more than I watch TV

MarsGal

The boxing and sorting of my stuff is going slower that I had hoped. I had no idea just how much stuff Ine have had stored away in corners and in boxes from the last move. I am beginning to panic without actually needing to yet. Just overwhelmed. I've been trying to box some light stuff for my sister to carry. She wants to help but still can't/won't do bending or carry heavy stuff until her doctor give her the go ahead, but she is bringing her car for extra transport. The moving van will be here next week for the heavy stuff. My contractor sent two of his guys over yesterday to haul off the heavy stuff, electronics and general trash. They will be back after I get the rest of what I am keeping out of the house to haul off what is left. Holy Cow, I keep thinking I can lift and carry heavy stull like I used to. What a comeuppance.

The cats are more than a little suspicious by now what with Shan's upstairs fave, the futon, and Oscar's fave living room spot, the old rocker recliner, gone.
