Oldiesmann: Finally got the AmazonBot situation under control. I basically changed some server settings to tell AmazonBot that it's not allowed to access anything on the site. That should fix the speed issues we've been experiencing lately

Oh Callie!  Please fix that up & be well!  You matter to me!  To all of us.  I am suffering the ravages of Forgettery Land, & do not look in very often any more, but your news shivers me.  YOU, I remember!  love & kisses from me.  I was MaryPage last I checked.

CallieOK

MaryPage, I'm so glad you remember me :-*
Do you remember you have a granddaughter who owns...or used to own...a business in the Oklahoma town where my family lives?

I'm feeling back to normal, whatever that means. ;) Son told me yesterday that "I looked like Mom again."  :smitten:

Enjoy your day, Everyfriend!

BarbStAubrey

I've learned it also matters if you are a earth whatever or metal whatever or a water whatever - for instance I'm a water rooster and therefore not, using my word, as obnoxious insisting on my way or the highway or as high and mighty cock of the yard but calmer and it suggests more diplomatic - whew -

Pigs...
- water pigs are known for being good communicators and responsible
- earth pigs are known for being well-grounded and lucky in social situations.
- Metal Pig is typically described as more ambitious, determined, and resilient, with a focus on quality of life and a preference for a relaxed lifestyle,.
- Wood Pigs are said to be as calm, but they're also easy to love and overcome difficulties with relative ease. Their relationships tend not to be filled with passion, remaining straightforward and earnest.
- Fire Pig is seen as more energetic, positive, and outgoing, often thriving in social situations and relying on strong connections with others

the year you are born lists the element of the animal

And I am an Earth Snake.  >:(
In the words of Indiana Jones,  "I hate snakes!"
Think I'll just stick with our common old calender that hangs on the wall and tells me the day/month/year and reminds me of appointments.

& my memory is so bad now, but I think she has moved.  And when Kiersten, my great granddaugghter, was still a toddler, she announced she wanted to be a pom.  Jump forward to now.  Her High School just won the State Championship.  And she was one of them!
Grreat celebrations.  Kiersten Smith.  Look 'er up!

CallieOK

MaryPage, the school that won the championship is the one your great granddaughter may go to! That's the same town your granddaughter has /had her business in. How exciting!

Barb, I would describe myself as a wood pig with a touch of water pig.

I agree with Phyllis - just look at the calendar and figure out what I should be doing...if anything!!

Just watched the start of the new season of The Voice. I'm amazed at what kind of voice the judges think is wonderful.
Sleep well, Everyfriend and have pleasantdreams  !

Ciaobella

Callie, I too watch The Voice, and I must say there were some pretty talented singers.  I love Kelsea Ballerini as a judge, she is so refreshing.  Oh, and who doesn't swoon for Michael Bublé?
Ciao for now~

Marilyne

I've never seen "The Voice", but have heard so much about it over the years, and  I know I could get easily hooked on it.  The last competition type show that we watched for many years, was "Dancing With the Stars".   Then they totally changed the format, and eliminated all the familiar faces, and we lost interest.  I don't think it's even on anymore, or is it?

I've lost track of most of the programs on Broadcast TV and also HGTV, the past couple of years.  We like the series shows on HBO, and also watch lots of movies on Amazon Prime, TCM and lots of the many news shows.  My husband is a hockey fan, so usually a Sharks game is on about three nights a week.

Ciaobella, I think you called yourself "A News Junkie"?  I'm also one, and have been for most of my life!  We still take the daily newspaper, watch many TV news shows, and I have lots of news sites on the computer that I check every day.

MaryPage

Yes, it just stays on, or off, all day!

We have an infallible weather report in our house.  All we have to do is take a quick look at Steve's head.  If it has a bald pate glistening, we know it is warm out.  But a black ski cap tells us it is ca-ca-ca-ca-cold.
I get the biggest kick out of checking every morning.  Today, that black cap looms high over his head.  It does not FIT his head, as much as it is perched there like a newspaper headline in BOLD print.
We all have our way of doing things.  I could not be more delighted than I am with the way things are conducted at chez Flynn!

patricia19

Good morning, MaryPage! I do love your turn of phase! :))

Marilyne

MaryPage, good to see you here this morning.   I agree with Patricia . . . your messages are a pleasure to read!   You have a way with words, that is all your own.

BarbStAubrey

Wonderful MaryPage - I can see it now through your eyes - how much fun - love it that  you share with us your life's experiences as they happen... and the similes you choose are perfect.

So humid for two days now and finally some of the humidity is falling from the sky as huge scattered rain drops.

Here I thought I would get so much done before Kathamarie arrives but not so - if it is not the cold it appears now also to be high humidity slowing down my leg joints - ah so just a message to realize I need to depend on my kids to help when the going is no longer easy...

I must say I was amazed to see how well the hanging and potted plants held up in the garage with me not watering them regularly - did well during the first few days and then it got too much - just out there and I was wise enough to shelter them with the live wreathes from Christmas I was tossing - I wonder if there was some moisture in them that helped but whatever, yes they are droopy but recoverable. tra la... just put a few out to catch some of these gigantic rain drops falling from the sky... I think it gets cold again next week so I can't be too anxious to expect Spring like temps to stay - plus I have not noticed any returning birds and I trust they know more than the weather man.

Ciaobella and Marilyne I'm also a news junkie - Newsmax is my thing along with a few others - a few nights a week I still watch our local PBS station for mostly Brit Coms or Masterpiece or Masterpiece Mystery although, this newer version of Sherlock drove me up the wall the first time they aired it and now I look for something else during the hour or hour and a half that it is showing. Since Funny Woman is hitting a sore spot looks like Sunday night will be a movie after All Creatures Great and Small which is all things to comfort and provide quiet smiles.

Well rain drops stopped while writing this but still overcaste - I wonder what's next... at least it is not snow or sleet that the news is saying a wide swath of the nations from mid west to east coast is experiencing - hoping y'all stay warm and sleep tight

MaryPage

Huge hugs to each of you.  Seriously, your compliments warm the cockles of me heart!  Deed they do!

Marilyne

Good Morning from rainy California.  We need all the water we can get, so bring it on!  Hoping all those reservoirs canals and percolation ponds fill up and stay full to protect us from the dreaded fires.  The snow pack in the High Sierra is now adequate to provide both SoCal and NorCal with water in the upcoming dry months.

Barb - Enjoy your time today with your daughter.  You didn't say how long she will be staying, but I hope long enough to have a good visit, and maybe she can help you with some of the work around the house?  I'm fortunate, in that all three of our  adult kids live within a few miles  of here, so we see them often.  Not so with the grandkids.  They're all far enough away that that we rarely see them, except for one granddaughter, 34,  who lives with her mother. (our oldest daughter.)

Callie - Hope you're feeling much better, and maybe all the way back to normal?  Keep us posted on how you're doing,  and also the three grandchildren and the new baby?   I guess he will soon be a year old?   My youngest granddaughter is now engaged, but no mention of a wedding date.

MaryPage - I always look forward to your messages, so hope we hear from you today?   I remember a year or so ago  there was a fire, and your daughter's house burned down.  (not the same daughter you're living with now, I don't think?).  I'm wondering if they have rebuilt, and are now in their new house?

Ciaobella - Hoping we hear more from you too.  You and Barb mention watching lots of PBS programs and specials.  I used to watch it  lot in the past, and loved "Downton Abbey", and so many other shows.  Now, there's so much to choose from - hundreds of choices every day - that I
I've gotten involved in other channels and programs.   Being able to record a show ahead of time,  is important here!   My husband won't watch anything, where he has to sit through commercials.  How quickly we get spoiled!   He even starts recording the hockey and football games about an hour ahead, and then scrolls through  the commercials.  It's amazing how short those Pro games actually are, without the endless breaks.

Ciaobella

Marypage, you seriously made me laugh out loud with your way of knowing the weather for the day by looking at Steve's head.  :2funny:

Marilyn, yes, I am a news junkie, and my primary interest is in politics. I know sounds crazy huh?  :idiot2: I became this way probably about 20 years ago.  If you have ever seen the movie Runaway Bride with Julia Roberts (Maggie the runaway bride) and Richard Gere (Ike the news reporter), he researches Maggie's history, he discovers that she adopts the interests of each of her fiancés, noted most prominently by her choice of eggs.  In the following weeks, Maggie works to discover herself, sampling different egg dishes to determine her true favorite. :eat:  She explains to Ike that she ran from her previous weddings because the men did not know who she truly was, in part due to her efforts to conform to their preferences. However, with Ike she ran because even though he truly understood her, she did not understand herself, she was only being the kind of woman she thought the men wanted her to be, she kept changing the kind of eggs she liked. At the end of the movie, she finally says her favorite kind of eggs are eggs benedict!

This was me about 20 years ago, I did not know enough about politics or parties to determine where I actually stood, so I began absorbing every angle of news to help me determine what aligned with my personal views.  I think like Ike confronted Maggie telling her she didn't know what kind of eggs she even liked, one day my grown son lovingly asked me "Mom, you have confused me where you stand because you have gone back and forth so where do you stand?"  That day I stood in my kitchen and really thought about what he said and so I decided to search for the answer to his question and find out what my favorite egg is so to speak.  Wow was I surprised throughout this journey.  Like Maggie, today I KNOW myself well enough to know who, what, where, why and when I came to a conclusion without any influence or apology for who I am and what I stand for.  Gosh, it's so freeing to know this...along the way to this discovery I loved being informed, I loved seeing the viewpoints of others yet come to knowing my own, and while eggs benedict was Maggie's favorite eggs, I really don't care for eggs benedict at all.  ;D

I am also a romantic movie junkie as you can all see.   :smitten:

Ciao for now~

MaryPage

MARILYNE, my demmentia makes me forget to conclude news bulletins later/  Yes, my daughter Anne's house burned down, & now is all fixed, albeit smaller, I am told.  She lives over on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, & I have not seen the new house.

We are told to expect snow this coming week.

BarbStAubrey

Marilyne - Kathamarie will be here till Tuesday evening - just a quicky but oh so nice - and yes, we will not only get caught up but accomplish a few things...

Ciaobella - my experience with politics and parties is the parties have so changed their focus I ended up changing parties but then off and on I have voted independent - I think as you sorted through your values, I find I vote my values more than loyalty to a national party. However, state politics is another thing - it has been at times a circus, a ride on a roller coaster, bumper cars or going through the fun house - it is tame now compared to all the shenanigans that was so aptly written about when Molly Ivins was still with us. Plus many areas grew beyond its traditional Texas roots that is known for its characters so that representatives are less colorful and more like business men then cattle men or oil men with only a few city folk sprinkled in and even they had a similar way of talking and referring to things because they were  usually football alumni from one of the many Texas colleges. Still much pushing and pulling between legislatures that have their own issues compared to national issues - it is just not the rollicking cartoon characters typical till these more recent years.

With my daughter here the next few days I won't be watching the news - we have different outlooks and I just would not be that rude to infringe my views on her anymore than I would be comfortable her choosing the news that reflects her viewpoint. I'll just keep in touch with what is happening on the computer and get caught up after our visit is over - there is so much to life we enjoy that is not centered in politics.

Ok PBS tonight and soup for supper - sleep well...

CallieOK

Good Evening, Everyfriend,

Re: Politics.  I stay away from that subject with family and friends. Usually disagree with one party's aims and don't like the other one's candidate.
Barb, I enjoyed reading Molly Ivins and thought she had an "interesting" outlook on things.

Marilyne, Callie - Hope you're feeling much better, and maybe all the way back to normal?  Keep us posted on how you're doing,  and also the three grandchildren and the new baby?  I guess he will soon be a year old?

I'm feeling back to normal - whatever that is.  Sons insisted I needed Home Health Care so I reluctantly agreed to have a "Companion" come two afternoons a week.  She came for the first time yesterday and we got acquainted; I really liked her but don't need that much done because I have a wonderful housecleaner and have ordered groceries delivered since Covid. I order on-line and the same shopper usually picks up my order, so we have become friends - although I don't know her last name and she only knows mine because it's on my information. I'll keep the Companion coming because she will take me to appointments and Braum's Dairy Store, which doesn't have delivery. That will relieve son from having to come every week - although he will still take me to medical appointments.

Oh, the Grands!
Miss Ellen is still in New York City and has moved to a new apartment in the same building as her best friend. She has two roommates and, of course, I looked up her new address on Google maps (she teases me about that).  The apartment building is across the street from the Hudson River and looks very nice. I asked her if her apartment looked out on the river and she said that would be more expensive - although she can look sideways from a window and barely see the river.
She's two blocks from the "train" (I don't know if she means the subway or an aboveground train) and it takes her about 30 minutes to the Loft store near Times Square where she works part-time.  Her new apartment is closer to the twins she "Nannies" every afternoon and sometimes on weekends.

Dr. Emily is doing very well with her own chiropractic clinic and usually has a waiting list. She specializes in pre-natal and pediatric chiropractic.  She has begun having an Open House every month.

Sir Carson is an assistant superintendent for a major construction company in OKC and has been assigned to a Mental Health Center being built by the county.  He and Brittany, parents of Cooper, have set a wedding date next September. She is an OU Sooner and he is an OSU Cowboy and both schools have a home game on the wedding day.  I think we know what we'll be watching at the reception! ;D

Great Grandson will be 9 months old a couple of days after Valentine's. #1 son and wife keep him in the mornings at their house because his Mama works from home. Cooper has been crawling for two weeks and is leading his grandparents on a Merry Chase!  This week, he watched the dogs go in and out the doggie door, crawled over and tried to push it open. He couldn't do it but I'll bet he figures it out pretty soon.

We've been having heavy fog overnight until mid-morning this week.  Other son has to commute to his office and has either worked at home or waited until fog cleared to go in.  His wife had a shorter commute but I think she has worked from home a day or two.

This son brought a big container of homemade broccoli/cheese soup and a loaf of homemade bread (He likes to cook), so I've been "feasting" on that.

Sleep well, Everyfriend, and have pleasant dreams.

Ciaobella

Barb/Callie, I too feel it's better to not discuss or impose my political news shows on family & friends when they visit.  There are just so many more things to agree with and enjoy.  I agree, parties have changed and with experience and wisdom I too see where people have changed.  I'm just so grateful my hubby and I agree because I know some couples who are drastically different, and I know the tension they live with.  Ughhh.... can you imagine.

Callie, so you have one great grandson, how wonderful.  I too have a great grandson who will be 3 yrs. old this June.  My hubby and I travel 45 minutes every Friday to spend the day with Haze while our granddaughter his Mommy works from home.  We take him to this fun place called Playland, an inside playground with tons of activities and blown-up bouncy houses and slides.  After an hour of that we take him to Chick fil A for lunch and then back home for his nap.  As I was putting his shoes on to leave Chick fil A today, he said, "I had fun at Playland, and I had fun at Chick fil A."  He always says thank you Nonnie & Papa without any nudging. Oh, how little ones can brighten our day. You sound like you have kept close to your grandchildren in their adult years and they seem to be very successful.  Homemade broccoli/cheese soup sounds yummy!!

MaryPage, I have always wanted to visit Maryland.  We stayed in Leesburg, Virginia years back and experienced paranormal presence in the bedroom.  We went down to the manager and told him we wanted to leave and when he asked what the problem was, I told him I felt spirits in the room.  He laughed and said, "Oh, weren't you aware of the history of this bed and breakfast, it used to be a funeral home and yes, we are known for paranormal activity." :o  We went to the nearest Holiday Inn. ;D

Ciao for now~

BarbStAubrey

Politics ended up being a 'conversation' - I did not talk much and when I did, tried to find where we agree - I notice her upsetment is really about Trump's personality and mannerisms -  I think my daughter needed a mommy so she could unload and go crazy for a few minutes - and so I played that roll rather than getting in a twist because of political differences or making an issue over different information which was obvious. I notice today she is actually researching and finding facts about many of the issues she was understanding in a negative way - after one realization she said I guess we have to dig a bit rather than taking the news at face value. I do not see this as a door to further conversations but it did clear the tension. For that I am thankful.

MaryPage

One thing I am deeply sentimental about is my years as a Brownie & Girl Scout.

Last night, a Brownie came by with her mother in tow to sell us some cookies.  My daughter was also into scouting, so we were thrilled.  We bought 5 varieties & paid out thirty dollars!  I was flabbergasted.  Thirty dollars was more than a lot of people made in a WEEK back in the nineteen thirties.
Seriously.

But the biggest disappointment came when we commenced pigging out.  Now, do your duty to your country & the Scouts & buy you some cookies.  BUT, be prepared to be disappointed.  They are tiny.  They are not flavorsome.  In short. you ain't gonna love 'em.

But you can savor your memories!

patricia19

MaryPage, they've been "industrialized", and no longer as good as they were in past years.

MaryPage

This is what Google says was the average wage in 1935:

According to available data, the average weekly wage earned in 1935 was around $12.75 based on an average daily wage of $2.12 for a 6-day work week.

RAMMEL

But then, --- How much did a loaf of bread cost?
It's the WINDMILLS

          THIMK

MaryPage

In 1935, a loaf of bread cost around 8–9 cents. The price of bread increased from 8 cents to 9 cents in April 1935.

Marilyne

in 1935 I turned one year old.   We lived in Los Angeles.  My father worked as a truck driver for a paper company and my Mother was a telephone operator.  Maternal Grandmother lived with us and took care of me while they worked.

patricia19

Hmmm...in 1935 I wasn't a gleam in anyone's eye, or of anyone's expectations. My parents married in 1947 after the war's end and the service personnel mustering out, back to civilian life. I was the middle child, with each of us born in separate decades.

I sold the most cookies two years in a row because doing so was a free pass to the GS camp.

Marilyne

Patricia, I think Jenny,  (Denver),  was born in 1947, the year your parents were married?  You're probably still our youngest member, except for Oldiesman?   Not many of us left here in S&F, who were  born during the Depression?  MaryPage was, and sounds like maybe Barb and also Rick?

MaryPage

I was born in 1929, the year of the great crash.  I will turn 96 in May.  I was an Army Brat, & in 1935 my Dad was teaching at West Point.  Females of our species were not allowed in those hallowed halls as yet, but World War II was creeping up on us.  Oh, & I went to school at West Point.  Elementary School.

We had quarters right on the beautiful Hudson River.  It was gorgeous then, but I am betting it is all built up now.  Ice Cream was my favorite food back then, & it still is.  Chocolate was my choice back then, while Spumoni has held that title for many years now.

patricia19

Back in Seniornet, P. Roe called me a junior senior.

After coming over from ThirdAge, I was, at the time, the youngest.

She also didn't like my then avatar of angelface, regardless of it being a family nickname of mine.

She didn't see why everyone didn't simply use their names.
