From Shotgun by Eugene McGuinness;

""All aboard" cleopatra purrs.
Among pens and swords, the gun's mightier
A mane of gold like a flame from a skull
Upon the wings of an angel
We'll leave this hellholeLittle boy lost down devil's alley
The mad alsatian can almost taste me
Merrily merrily in terror I flee
Into the glow of traffic like a lava flow you'll see me"'

Or,

Wings of an Angel by Lauren Alaina

"Does your halo grow heavy
Hanging over your head
Boy you've held my heart steady
Since the first day we met
Every time I lose my way
Only you can bring me back
'Cause your will just don't break
You keep this train on its tracks

Under the wings of an angel
Where my weary heart can sleep
I can close my eyes without thinking twice
'Cause my soul's been set free
Under the wings of an angel
Heaven comes to me
The pearly gates are open wide
To eternity

Denver

#1 IN THE ARMS OF AN ANGEL

#5 BEYOND THE SEA
🦋 Jenny
"Love many, trust few; learn to paddle your own canoe"

Marilyne

Jenny - So sorry, but both answers are wrong. :( These are all old American or British folk songs.

Patricia - Also sorry , but neither of those songs are correct for number #1.  Choose another one to guess.

Marilyne I see what you're saying and I agree none of us have the answer you had in mind. However, next time please phase the question carefully.

#1. The Prisoner Song (If I Had the Wings of an Angel)

junee

11. Lost and gone forever..  Oh my darling Clementine

12. Home on the Range.         ??

Marilyne

Junee - Good to see you!   #11 is correct - Oh My Darling, Clementine

#12, Home on the Range, was already guessed by Patricia.  Pick another song to name./b]

Marilyne

Patricia, the whole point of a lyrics quiz, is to not give the entire line of the song.  My clue was "The wings of an angel". If I had made the clue, "If I had the wings of an angel", it would be too easy, because that's the first line of the song, and would give it away.  Notice that all the other clues are given the same way.

Marilyne

Thank you to Jackie, Junee, Jenny and Angelface,  for guessing some of the familiar old folk songs/camp songs/cowboy songs, et al

I'm closing out this quiz now.  I was hoping to resurrect the old Music Quiz format, but there's just not enough interest anymore.  This particular Folk Song  quiz, was one that I had posted a number of times, over the years, starting way back in Senior Net,  and then here in S&F.  Members liked it back then, and we always got a good turnout of guessers, but times have changed.

Folks Song answers

2. Bid me adieu - Red River Valley
3. A silvery crown - A Shanty in Old Shantytown
4. Me and my true love - Loch Lomond
5. Over the sea - My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean
6. Chicken and dumplings - She'll Be Comin' Round the Mountain (when she comes)
7. A hearty welcome - When Johnny Comes Marching Home Again
8. A weeping willow tree - There is a Tavern in the Town

Just for fun- here is the same quiz, different order, that I had saved in my archives, and those players who guessed these songs correctly.  I think this was posted around 2007 or 2008?  Sorry to say that all of these members who played, have either passed away, or no longer visit Seniors & Friends.

1. A Shanty In Old Shantytown - Chia

Sad seeing these names of past members...We still have Don ( Radioman ) Kelly does not post but his wife Ellie does pop in occasionally but does not post..

Marilyne...
...thank you for your effort in trying to resurect one of your - our popular quizzes from the past but, as you rightly state " times have changed.." yes sadly that is true...

Also thank you for mentioning Soultwin, i remember her well but for the life of me, just never could remember her name...Soultwin used to post daily " on this day " where over the years on this day something unusual had happened...Soultwin was a fun person, and very much missed...I also remember she was found dead in her bed, and alone in New York, and none of us was aware of this for days..it was New York where her service was held, if i have my facts correct...

This is part why i am getting concerned over our missing Bubble, this is the 10th day she has not posted...

Marilyne

Jackie - soultwin, was a good friend to me, and I missed her so much when she was gone.   We had a special connection, in that we had the same birthday - born in the same year, on the same day!  As you probably know, her twin sister had died a short time before she started posting in Senior Net . . . hence the screen name, soul-twin.  I'm remembering others who posted in the Music Quizzes over the years:  RAMMEL, was a regular, and so were Sasha and Katie Sturtz.  Going back to SN, we had quite a few men, two of which were MartyfromMiami, and Rambler.

I heard from Kelly last night, about yesterday's quiz! He doesn't want to post in S&F anymore, but sent me the answers to two of the songs - #4. "Loch Lomond", and #8: "There is a Tavern in the Town".  Unfortunately, I had already closed out the quiz, so he didn't get credit for them.

Back in the day, there were lots of members who loved pop music and lyrics of all kinds, so we had a great turnout for these quizzes.  Not so anymore, so best to bid them all farewell.  :'(

Marilyne..
... i was not a member of Senior Net, i was not aware of that forum when it existed but, joined Seniors and Friends a year after you all had moved to our site of S & F's from Senior Net...I understand Pat had set up for all of you to have a new home to post in..
Yes i was aware that Soultwin had lost a twin sister..
Yes i warmed to Soultwins humour, ( my kind of humour ) we both got on well and had a few laughs on here together....

Marilyne...
...what a coincidence, so much in common re, your Birth-dates-Years...

angelface555

Marilyne, I believe it is a bit premature to give up on all quizzes!

Don't give up on quizzes. Sometimes people just aren't aware that a new one has started. I just now came in on this last one, and started humming the old songs I remember from long ago in the Smokies. And then it was over! :-\

Marilyne

rutumi - So sorry I closed my Folk Song quiz too soon.  I remember that you used to join in on the music quizzes, way back when they were very well attended.  If there is a next time, I'll send you a personal message to let you know.  I hope that everything is going well for you and you family?  When I go to the Lutefisk dinner at our Nordahl Hall this Christmas, I'll think of you!   :D

Amy, you are correct for #2, but I recently discovered that there is a contender to the title in the later-born John Murray.

You're also correct for #11, Anne Frank's home.

Patricia, this is the information that I was going off of..

Matthew Maury 1806 - 1873 American astronomer, historian, oceanographer, meteorologist, and cartographer. Considered the father of modern oceanography and called the pathfinder of the seas.

Sir John Murray (1841-1914) is widely recognized as the founder of oceanography and was the first to use the term
I can't change the direction of the wind, but I can adjust my sails to always reach my destination.
Jimmy Dean
If there are no dogs in Heaven, then when I die I want to go where they went. -Will Rogers

Thank you, Amy; it's interesting that they were in similar fields and interests and probably either knew of or had heard of each other.

9: What color do you get when you mix red and white?
    Pink, or light red

19: What was Elvis Presley's middle name?
    ARON
Kats are krazy, kalm or kollected, but mostly kôôl

patricia19

You are right on both #s 9 & 19, Rutumi, but note that while Aron was on his birth certificate, he spelled it with a double a when he wrote his middle name.

In honor of all those who've gone before, I present a new quiz. Same rules, two questions to begin with and Googling is allowed and expected if all else fails. Enjoy.
